Yea, this is quite pertinent in some countries. Back in the early 1990's I recall South Africa showing a rather ridiculously edited version of Robocop. All of the violence was removed and even some of the dialogue was replaced. It was very badly done and became almost laughable.

But aside from sparing time for local commercials, these were also for censoring should they have found a scene or even an opinion which might have infringed personal or political opinions.

Indeed we cut scenes in France (maybe the episode was too long, but I don't know because we haven't had commercials for long ,maybe it wasn't the reason).

I discovered it because I bought the dvds and I could compare.
They usually cut the final scene, it was easier I suppose ( for example in the Widowmaker when Mac and Nikki talk about climbing up again,I think it was very funny and useful but still , and in Early Retirement when Mac and Pete talk about the Karate lessons it also disappeared into thin air for us ,would you call it censorship?

I think the worst thing was in Ghost Ship , right in the middle(almost),when they cut the scene with the Indians in the forest and the beginning of the scene when the bad guys are after them ,it didn't make any sense when we saw Mac running after....an unknown danger.

But let's not be too harsh on our European channels/stations whatever the reasons .At least we could watch episodes...share with you Americans and enjoy what you could enjoy. smile.gif

And I'm delighted we had the opportunity to do it smile.gif

In Belgium we always had the full episodes shown. The first airings here were even without commercial breaks. So we got to the full 45 minutes. When after a few years the commercial breaks came along, it was first in half of the episodes and than after the first and third fade out. But they always showed the complete episode. Thank God, for that.

The only cutting I ever remember was when I taped and watched Back From The Dead. They edited the first phrase and the episode title out of it for whatever reason starting the episode: 'So for a Minnesota boy like me...'

That's so weird!

I guess not so much the cutting or editing involved but more so where they did it. biggrin.gif

QUOTE (Nutsy @ 8 June 2007 - 10:27 AM)
I just saw it again and I think this is one of the best Penny-MacGyver dynamics in the whole series. I didn't notice any man-woman tension (you know what I mean?) but I have never been sure the writers of the show actually wanted there to be any at all. And if they did, shouldn't they at least share the bedroom?! So I guess just good friends.

If I remember right, Mac says in "Cleo Rocks" that he sees Penny as a younger sister, symbolically.

There are 4 incidents I can think of where Mac could be said to be regarding women as eye-candy.

I think one is in "Cleo Rocks". One is when he mentions his female neighbour after he has moved to the houseboat. Another is in "Passages", where he decides that if the afterlife contains women in tight clothing, it might not be too bad. The other one is when he has been told that his yellow and brown car is unattractive to women, and then a woman in a tight dress comes along and admires the car.

Compare that to Bond, James Bond, who sees every attractive woman as a potential sexual partner.

You may or may not recall the central question of When Harry Met Sally: is it possible for a [straight] man and a [straight] woman to just be platonic friends?

MacG.gif has a lot of platonic female friends.

Bravo to Vejar for its realization, very great episode, with the suspense to be "afraid" and a. we turn around at the end ... Bravo. Great for Halloween.

Dead Fictional Girlfriends Research Report@DeadFGReport
The 1988 #MacGyver Halloween special must be seen to be believed. It's set up as a ghost story, veers off into murder mystery, and ends up a feminist cautionary tale, which also might have a ghost in it.

But what does it have to do with the recent overturning of Roe V. Wade?

I wonder if the author of that post realizes that Roe v Wade was passed in 1973 which means everyone one of the shows they are commenting about already had legal abortion law and therefore their entire post is moot.

I don't remember the timeline of the episode, but as the article says:

MacGyver's platonic girlfriend Penny Parker (Teri Hatcher) inherits an old house that belonged to her "crazy" Aunt Betty, who disappeared on Halloween 1958.

So, Penny's aunt didn't have that chance when she was pregnant. Legal and safe abortions weren't a thing in the 50s.

Yes, you're right. I didn't think about the events happening earlier in the episodes timeline.

Anyone know if the sugar that is laced with some type of drug if this was supposed to be the sheriff putting the drug in pennys sugar or if they are using old sugar which was found in the house that was drugged years ago for betty?

Now technically I'm driving a stolen car following a kidnapping... and I didn't even get to have my first cup of coffee. (Mac)

That's a really good question. I've always though the sheriff drugged it, but I just rewatched the scene and he doesn't really have time to do anything, also, why would he just happen to have whatever the drug was with him?

So now I'm thinking it must have been old drugged sugar from when Betty lived there, but why would they risk using such old sugar?

The sheriff did ask Penny if she wanted more coffee/tea. That's when he put it in and he was with his back to Mac and Penny. So he had time no matter how brief to put something in there.

Just doesn't make sense for to purposely drug her because she wasn't on to him and she was no threat to him at that time. I could see doing it at the end when they are in the boiler room.

Just something that seemed glossed over. It would make more sense for it to be them using old sugar that was still there, but as you said, why would they risk doing that. Also wouldn't the sheriff be hallucinating since he had some too? Also why would the sheriff purposely drug betty? To try and make her loose her baby? To try and keep her quiet about being pregnant? Going down the sugar rabbit hole here lol

He knew they had found the skull (which he knew was Betty's) and now they had done the facial reconstruction so
they knew it was her.

unless he sprinkled something into the sugar before scooping it into her cup.

Was there any mention of her being drugged? Virgil says the Sheriff was hurting Betty which sounds more like a fight or an attempted murder to me. I think the laced sugar was something new for Penny.
