Also on this one I voted excellent to this conclusion episode. They made a deal in stealing that Ming Dragon and MacGyver let know who's in charge. That right he himself. He says where he'll do the drop and when he does the drop after seeing Lisa and Kosoff. Great finale too.

I love the scene where Mac and Jack break into the air duct and steal the dragon...that whole scene has everythign I think of when I think of MacGyver.

This is one of my all time favourate episodes.

... continuation of excellence.

Who do you enlist when you have to break your own flawless? security system? Who do you call when stealing a priceless national treasure?
Who do you want on your side when risking international diplomatic crisis.
oh.. and trying to save that stupid ex?

Jack Dalton!!
roller.gif

Classic interaction. Some of the funniest stuff out of the entire series.

Ow... ch... urther?
Since when do you speak Russian?
How much further?

That's such a good one and when MacGyver gets trapped inside that glass. He pulls a face like... you know that with his nose and Jack Dalton goes: 'I don't know the combination!' Mac with his finger on the glass and Jack goes: 'Nine?'
That was hilarious.

I agree, second that motion. Seen it too. Nicholas Cage is da man. One of my favourite actors or should I say movie actors? It's a recommendation.

How can you NOT like Nicolas Cage??? He's one of my favourites. He and Mel Gibson are fighting for the first place as best actor in my mind. 8MM, Windtalkers, Leaving Las Vegas... all Cage recommedations.

Don't know. Just don't.

I like Mel though.

I love the Leathel Weapon movies!

Oh and BraveHeart!!!

QUOTE (MacGyver Jul 7 2005 @ 03:35 PM )
Hmm, well a side note on movies here. I must second the recommendations for "National Treasure", which, next to Spider-Man 2 and Napoleon Dynamite, is like the best movie of 2004!!!!! I totally love this movie. It's definitely worth owning. It's is a treasure hunt movie, but it doesn't feel like a rip-off of Indiana Jones. It is similar to Indiana Jones, but Benjamin Gates also is like a combination of Indiana Jones, a little bit of James Bond, and definitely a lot of MacGyver!!!!! (I also felt a twinge of Mission:Impossible flavor in there too, with the team of Ben, Abigail and Riley.) In fact, Riley and Ben were quite similar to the team of Jack and Mac, which is what makes "Lost Love" (Part 2) such an awesome episode.

MacGyver and Jack working together is hilarious. And Jack is really funny when MacGyver's trapped in the case and he's trying to figure out the combination. This is also one of the times where Jack helps MacGyver out- one time to counter for the gazillion times Mac's bailed Jack out!

And MacGyver has the whole deal with running into his old, thought-dead love Lisa, finding out she's really tricked him, and then watching her double-cross Kosof and finding out she really does love him but then she's shot dead. What a turn of events! blink.gif As Benjamin J. Grimm would say, "What a revolting development this is!"

But anyway, it's definitely one of my favorite MacGyver episodes. The 2-parters usually tend to be especially good.

Another neat thing to point out is that this episode features the return appearance of a character from Season 1's "Thief of Budapest" episode! (At least I think this is supposed to be the same character, even though it's portrayed by a different actor. )

Other points of interest- look for a new Nicholas Cage movie next years when he takes on the role of Marvel superhero Johnny Blaze, better known as Ghost Rider!

Also, cool rumor to think about. Disney is considering a sequel to "National Treasure"!!!!!!!!!! That would be cool if it's really done right. I can't wait.

And some good Mel Gibson movies include "Braveheart", "Maverick", "Man Without a Face", "Forever Young", the "Lethal Weapon" movies and he's still very well known for his action persona of "Mad Max"!!!!! And my favorite Mel Gibson movie is definitely "The Passion of The Christ"!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Cool trivia fact- Mel Gibson has a small but significant cameo in the movie. It's his hand that hammers the nail into Jesus' wrist, showing that he is just as guilty as all of us of putting Jesus on the cross because of his and our sin.) Very awesome movie.

And a very awesome episode of MacGyver.

biggrin.gif I thought that when I finally saw it, too! Really great movie! It put me in the mood to watch MacGyver! It had some really cool MacGyverisms in it too, though I can't recall them off hand--been awhile now since I saw it! I remember thinking "Hey, Mac would do something like that!"

I couldn't help but wonder whether Pete would have broken up over what was going on inside the glass when they were looking at the security tape, but they cut it off before it gets there! laugh.gif I love how Pete never doubts his friend in spite of the condemning evidence. Super great episodes!

QUOTE (Amy Sep 28 2005 @ 06:12 AM )
Something else I love about this ep is that Mac is the one getting Jack in trouble for once! When they're in Mac's room and he's telling Jack what's happened and what he has to do and he says to Jack "We have to steal the Ming Dragon" I can almost see the thought process going on in there. Remembering all the times he wanted to punch Jack in the nose, how many times he rolled his eyes at Jack's schemes, or all the times he tried to evade getting involved and got suckered in anyway--now it's his turn! Great irony! You can almost see the wince, even though it's not on his face.

"What do you mean 'we', Kemosabe?" Heehee.

And I love when Mac says "Egg-zactly." Talk about switching places.

QUOTE (MacGirl Sep 28 2005 @ 05:52 PM )
Here's another one for the Nicholas Cage fans: "Kiss of Death." Also has David Caruso. Cage plays a totally psycho bad guy, the kind who's truly nasty but so nuts he's funny, too.

I also noticed the return of the character from Thief of Budapest. I thought he was familiar!

I watched this again last night.

I think part 2 is better than part one, probably because its more action, part one is more about setting up the story.

I still really love the whole stealing the dragon scene. Classic MacGyver with every aspect of icon MacGyver.

I remember this episode was a topic of discussion amongst my friends, with how his roll of tape seemed to be able to stick to anything. Back then we had never heard of duct tape as it wasn't sold in New Zealand, so we had no idea that it could actually stick to a wide range of materials.

I think I may have actually organized for the first ever rolls of Duct tape to arrive in NZ. I remember somehow finding (maybe through a Popular Mechanics Magazine) the address of a company which sold the stuff and I wrote to them asking if they exported to NZ. Some weeks later I received a letter with the name of a hardware company which they had contacted and sent some rolls of tape to. Within a couple of days of receiving the letter I had a phone call from the hardware company to advise me that the tape had arrived, so I promptly organized for them to ship it to the local hardware store and low and behold... I had a roll of real "MacGyver tape" for myself and my friends to play with.

The first thing I did was replicate the "opening of the air vent" scene from this episode, where he used tape to hold down the pressure pin as they crawled into the air duct.

And how many hours of community service did you have to do after they caught you breaking into the local art exhibit? LOL!

I felt so sorry when MacGyvers love dies in his arms.

also loved the part where MacGyver and Lisa kiss.

Posted by: dinoman 24 April 2009 - 06:32 AM
Lisa is one of the few Mac's ex-girlfriend I like, even though she dragged him into troubles, just like the others do. Perhaps the character is played by the same actress who also plays Nikki, and I like Nikki.

Mac's plan of hiding the real dragon with the fake ones is good, but how on earth could he know that particular shop has fake dragons that look exactly the same as the real one? And you can tell at the last scene, the other fake dragons are pretty light in weight, probably made of plastic, while the one given to the General is heavier and made of stone. I'm a bit confused on that part. doh.gif

All and all, it's an excellent episode, especially the scene when Mac is trapped inside the box and he is trying to tell Jack the code, LOL!! I can't help but watching the same scene over and over again!

Posted by: Beachbead 24 April 2009 - 09:08 AM
Maybe the shop had a mix of hard and soft in dragons.

I don't think he went in there for that purpose. I think he just saw them there and decided that was a good place to hide them.. kind of a MacGyverism of sorts.

Then again, the Ming Dragon being the center piece of the festival, the store probably had a sign out front advertising Ming Dragon replicas.

If Mac did not go there and do some research beforehand, it would be 'pure luck' for him to find a store that has both stone-made and plastic-made Ming Dragon replicas for sale in such a chaotic situation.

Posted by: Beachbead 24 April 2009 - 04:34 PM
I would say yes he did some searching for the right store that had the same dragon.

I would say it's more likely that you weren't suppose to notice what they where made of.

Yeah it's easy to do sometimes. We know some of the MacGyver crew weren't big on thinking too much some times.

But to be fair they only have 8 days to produce the entire episode, from planning to completion, so thats 8 days to work out what they need for the sets and get it all made, filmed, edited and ready to broadcast, so we shouldn't be too hard on them.

Posted by: dinoman 25 April 2009 - 09:37 PM
Yes. It's interesting to know that a show with so many nitpicks is still loved, enjoyed, broadcasted and discussed by people around the world 15 years after cancellation!

I was just thinking about it just the other day how wonderful it is to have people just like me who still love the show and are still discusseing each ep.

This second part of the two parter is a definite "excellent" for me.

For once, it's Jack Dalton who has to help Mac out of trouble... and this really defines their friendship. Jack might be a liar and a cheater, cutting corners here and there, but he'd never let Mac down.

Like everyone else here, I really love the way Mac and Jack are cooperating to get the dragon out of the glass showcase. It's so entertaining to see how different they're coping with stress, and yet they're able to solve the problem!

The love story with Lisa is very tragic, and so is the ending, but it added more depth to the story. It gets a bit repetitive though--Mac's been used by so many women, but when push comes to shove they all realize their feelings for him are real...

Jack had some really hilarious lines, like "Houdini was an amateur!" when Mac picks that lock in mere seconds. And I laughed so hard when the first thing he did as he entered the helicopter was to put on his seat belt! biggrin.gif Safety first!

Like I said--Excellent.

Posted by: MacGyverisms 9 March 2013 - 11:22 AM
Like Part 1 this episode is amazing! For once, Jack has to help Mac get out of trouble, and not the other way around. And this episode really defines their friendship. The theft of the Ming Dragon was very cool and very funny. It is funny how Mac and Jack are both coping with stress. And the part where Mac gets trapped in the display case is hilarious! roller.gif The foot chase through Chinatown is funny, and a good location to use. The scenes at the generating plant were very, very suspenseful I thought for sure Mac was going to drop the Dragon on the floor and into a million pieces. Jack had some really hilarious lines, like "Houdini was an amateur!" when Mac picks that lock in only a few seconds. And I laughed so hard when Mac put Tanya in that shed with the necklace! And then Tanya gets blown away! A great sequel to the 1st part.

Overall Rating: 10/10 duct.gif MacG.gif swissopen.gif word1.png

HAHAHAHAHA I think that the scene in the museum where Mac is trapped in the display and Jack has to figure out the code is possibly one of my all-time favorite scenes between MacGyver and Jack!!! roller.gif

The scene where MacGyver is trapped in the display... one of the funniest RDA reaction scenes EVER! You're missing out, I'm tellin' ya.

That was like: 'Unnnnhhh'. Not part of the plan.

Ok so did Lisa die?

Posted by: Jediferret 6 June 2015 - 09:06 AM
She did die. However, the actress came back as Nikki Carpenter. Same actress, different character. wink.gif

Posted by: Elizabeth MacGyver 6 June 2015 - 12:19 PM
That's strange because Mac didn't seem to sad later.

Posted by: MacGyverGod 6 June 2015 - 01:41 PM
It bothers me too to see Mac unaffected if the last scene is set in the same day. She collapses in his arms, presumably dead but somehow I always think she survives. I think it's up to the fans to decide.

Posted by: Maclover 11 October 2015 - 01:22 PM
I am convinced she died, and I also think that he recovered from that a bit too quickly given the amount of distress that he portrayed in the helicopter when she did so (a well played scene IMV). He seemed amazingly chipper in the shop for someone whose true love had died earlier in the day.

I think the Chinese shop was a brilliant place to hide the dragon. Even if there had been no shelf of china dragons I expect it could have been placed on a shelf anywhere and it would have remained undiscovered for a few days, the clever bit was the swap, maybe the dragon was that famous that all Chinese 'ornament' shops would have had them - after all it was said many times that the dragon was a National treasure. You could wander into tourist shops all over London and purchase model Big-Bens why not a special Chinese dragon in the middle of a cultural event in a large city?

Can you tell I watched this one tonight? LOL

Better than part one in my opinion. It has a more enjoyable pace and it's great to mac and jack working together.

I get why they recycled guest cast members. There are probably hardly any actors in Canada. Even though it was utterly confusing when they recycled Lisa as Nikki so soon afterwards.

But not why the script writers weren't a tiny bit more imaginative when naming female characters.

Posted by: zoeryan 20 October 2018 - 10:05 PM
I love this two parter, one of my favorites - has Jack and Nikki*cough* Lisa, a couple good twists, humor, romance, suspense, action, a great mix of elements.

I find it interesting how Mac doesn't try to hide the fact he takes her hairpin - like it's a test he needs to know the answer to, whether she cares enough to help, which she does. Which makes sense since he just found out his whole relationship with her was an assignment.

I agree he was a little too chipper at the end in the store, but then he did already think she was dead for two years, and learned she betrayed him, so while upsetting, it was all very sudden - he'll need some down time to process all that!

I think it's totally fine to have ceramic replicas of a national treasure in a souvenir shop. I enjoyed the parade scenes, it made it feel like they were really just out in the city.

Excellent for sure. Classic MacGyver. Love it!

Posted by: Hannibal_Smith 22 September 2022 - 12:24 PM
This two-parter isn't flawless by any means, but I appreciate the fact that the commies feel like an actual threat. In most episodes, they're Ralph T. Guard klutzes who exist for MacGyver to run rings around. This is one of the only times in the series they really felt devious and dangerous enough to give him a run for his money.

Posted by: Barry Rowland 24 September 2022 - 06:30 AM
I'll second that. This was a genuine thriller for me.

Totally agree.

I think this is the best 2 parter of the series and both episodes individually rank pretty high on my favorites list as well.

I also think it layed the groundwork for what to expect for the rest of the season - it was like a pilot for the Vancouver reboot of the show. happy.gif
