"When I was a kid my grandpa gave me two things I'll never forgot, a subscription to Popular Mechanics, and a chemistry set"- MacGyver (S3:E16)

I remember having a chemistry set, a subscription to Popular Mechanics, and Boys' Life magazine growing up as a kid too (late 80's/early 90's). I learned a lot of nifty things from these magazines and the chemistry set as well. I just wish there was a huge all in one book of those "how to do make/fix" articles from Popular Mechanics from the late 1950's to early 1990's . I know Boys' Life published a "best of" book and a "outdoor skills" book.

So, did you guys have a subscription to any of these magazines? If so, what kind of things did you learn from them?

Popular Mechanics, which I still get. I love the how to articles and especially the reviews. My wife and our sons all had a chemistry set. The funnest one, IMO, was one turned out by The Dangerous Book for Boys. There was one from the same company for girls too, but ours is predominantly boys.

I started buying the PM magazine after hearing MacGyver say in an episode that he used to read it. Haven't read one for years now though.

Yep, I have a copy of that myself. It takes me back to a simpler, more innocent, era.... the 70's and 80's

They're fun! I'm from the 70's-early 80's era kid wise, so they're a trip down memory lane. My Dad used to get Popular Mechanics when I was a boy, so I just continued the tradition.
