Currently rewatching season 2. I watched "Phoenix Under Siege" yesterday. I always enjoy episodes with "Harry" The flashbacks Harry has throughout this epidode give some great insight to Mac's childhood and his relationship bond with Harry.

Season 7 Episode 4 "The Prometheus Syndrome"

A point I've been wanting to make for a while and that fits the episode and most of the best episodes

The reason MacGyver may seem cheesy is that they built their episodes like a movie, but into 45 minutes. That's good.

Yes! It is amazing they treated episodes like mini movies. I also think they found ways to piggyback on movies. Like this one is clearly cashing in on the 1990 film backdraft

I've been stressed for a bit and I'll do a mini review here I guess

It's a top half episode but not a top quarter episode. Ideally I'd explain why

Everything is works tightly, the characters, the settings, the clues, the foreshadowings. Good algebraic mystery.

But it's also a single track storyline. All of it is from MacGyver's perspective and yet it's one of the more generic scripts. Could also work for other shows with not too many changes.

But then again it worked and not every episode can be The Invisible Killer with a few additions.

It did work, its been years since I saw it and I was surprised I actually liked it. The female lead on this was annoying but the episode needed a foil and something MacGyver to play off of, there were moments you actually thought she was involved with the dark side of things.

I was just thinking about this episode when I was watching Hellfire and RDA got his first few deliveries in that felt more like he would do it in this type of episode rather than the Folksy Rural Guy.

Is there an episode of Current Era TV that does something similar to this topic but different? Probably not? I've been wondering if this type of episode could be done differently without doing a quasi rewrite lol

Just finished Early Retirement tonight. I'd give it a 7/10. Would have liked to see more of a buildup on what Weber was maneuvering but I guess they were pressed for time in the episode. Funniest part was seeing Pete in Karate clothes!

One of my most frequent rewatches. Near the top of my favorites.

I'm going to bring up something that has rarely been brought up:

Guy Roberts and to some degree Edward Mulhare's performance are a kind of weird that I think is rather strange to viewers post 1990 or so. Like we think there's gotta be a hidden point, or reveal about him, or something that figures into the story somehow. But there isn't. That's fine. It's just like.... is this a stock character, or a subversion, or what?

But then again characters in the best shows don't fit such boxes at all.

We could land at, 50s-60s actors were not all stars, and that's okay, and 70s-80s cultural ideas didn't leave them a lot of other avenues. Probably not really what they were going for but it's there nonetheless.

Oh and there is MacGyver's most problematic line, the one with the c word. Oof.

But hey, I love desert episodes, this is fun, there's something about 70s 80s western looks, it's like its own neo-western microgenre.

Top 5 episode for me too. I watch this, the survivors and the Human Factor probably the most.

I don't know what it is, I like all the characters in this one and the cat and mouse game with the bad guys.

I think wrecking the car.....and Mac just making promises to fix it is just hilarious

I also like when Mac's Macgyverisms don't work out..like the paperclip fuse!
