Here is the ranking of season 6. Just like season 4 this was a pretty strong season with nearly all 5 star episodes except for one: MacGyver's Women who not only was ranked the lowest this season but also overall with only a 2 star rating. The season itself started oddly and preachy with episodes like Tough Boys, The Gun and Twenty Questions with only Humanity as a real blast of an episode which was initially planned as the seasons premiere. Instead they chose to go with Tough Boys. A solid episode but maybe not one you want to start your season with. If they went with Humanity instead this season would've gone off with a bang. This episode sets off with an intensity rarely seen on the show and it could've shown right after Passages that after the coma episode MacGyver had no intention of backing down and coming back stronger then before and considering the change the world was going through at the time with very topical episodes like The Wall which came down on the moment Ceausescu was losing his power. The contrast in tones within the first six to eight episodes couldn't be any bigger. We've had blasts like Humanity, The Wall and the very dark Lesson In Evil switched with preachy toned episodes like Tough Boys, The Gun and Twenty Questions. And then there is like Harry's Will which is a much lighter tone then Lesson In Evil but that was a welcome change after such a dark episode followed by one of the series biggest disasters, MacGyver's Women. And I just can't seem to find a different order to air it in without reaching a season's lowpoint without consecutive weaker or preachy episodes. At first glance I would say: Humanity, The Wall, Twenty Questions, Harry's Will, Lesson In Evil, The Gun, MacGyver's Women, Tough Boys. Maybe that order makes more sense, I don't know.

Anyway, starting with Bitter Harvest, the season recovers and nearly reboots itself with a series of consecutive strong episodes for the remainder of the season. Dana Elcar virtually disappears from the season for 6 back-to-back episodes due to his illness and Bruce McGill was probably unavailable at the time so this is pretty much a MacGyver-going-solo season with no regulars in it except for Murdoc who may have had his best episode so far even though I considered Partners to be the best episode of season 2 but that was because of it's origins story rather then a Murdoc episode and here he makes it third place. Also for some reason in many episodes in this part of the season they all start alike: usually with MacGyver driving or getting out of his car. He's working a lot, usually at driving distance staying in motels, rather then doing globe-trotting adventures except for Eye of Osiris. Also there is a lot of fighting and MacGyver is getting hurt a lot: getting shot twice this season, beaten with a rifle, sprayed with pesticides, taking a blow to the head, getting blown up three times and once with severe burn injuries, stepping into a bear trap and getting punched. This is definitely a fun season if not a bit gritty at times: lots of bad grey rainy weather, plenty of night scenes or finales set at night like in season 4. But this season also happens to be the season I grew up with watching most episodes, so maybe nostalgia might be playing a factor in and with only one more season to go I think I may have an idea which episode might come out on top in the final ranking and it may not be what you expect.

This is the current total ranking of all seasons so far. Passages remains on top but Humanity and Lesson In Evil have weasled their way in between, shoving Serenity a couple of ranks lower. Kill Zone and The Negotiator remained close but also Strictly Business and Blind Faith found their way in the top 10, which is closed off with The Treasure of Manco and Eye of Osiris. The most notable thing I found out when whatching season 6 is that overall they're quite spread in the 5 star ranking. There are only 8 episodes of season 6 in the top 20 episodes which is equally dominated by the same amount of season 5 episodes and 4 season 3 episodes. It is pretty evened out when it comes to season 5 and 6, yet I feel like season 5 still dominates the top episodes, or maybe this is because they are less spread out than season 6. Not many other chances so far except that MacGyver's Woman is now at the bottom with a new ranking of 2 stars. Only one season remains now. A season that can have another variety in scores and that can shake things up on the top but also could fill up the bottom. Until that time this is it for now.

Here is the ranking of season 7. Again a more varied season, though not by much. An unexpected turn however brought up The Stringer to make it the number 1 episode of the season. It really was the last episode that made me feel I was watching MacGyver. I really thought Good Knight MacGyver was going to win for nostalgia reasons as it is my most watched episodes as a kid, especially when I was 7 years old, along with Obsessed, Mountain of Youth, and The Prometheus Syndrome. Further going down the the line we have Walking Dead, The Hood and Off The Wall which are also plenty of watched episodes in my childhood. I do have to admit seeing some of those back like Off The Wall it received a lower place in the 5-star ranking, for the strange reason that what usually is one of the most decisive factors for a high score gives it now a lower score and that is... the score. The musical score sounds a bit too comedic for my taste. Yes, it's a lighter episode and there is a great rooftop chase but in general the music seems also too lighthearted, it doesn't sound cool or threatening or exciting, apart from the rooftop.

Everything else from the bottom three episodes... Split Decision speaks for itself, it's a bad episode and an even worse episode then MacGyver's Women. There is hardly a plot in there, except for a good training montage with great music, there's nothing in it. The Coltons had a least some fun, despite being a spin-off pilot rather than a MacGyver episode. And then there is Honest Abe which still scored fairly good but Abe is just a terrible character. Compared to him Pinky is at least nice to be around. A little excentric, bullheaded and impulsive perhaps but at least he has the heart in the right place and more importantly MacGyver offered to help him out, he wasn't kidnapped like Abe did. Anyway, this is it for season 7. The current total ranking will follow shortly plus the two tv-movies. Things can still change and especially when I re-rank everything for the final ranking. Some scores may even change once I re-ranked them because there are few things I have to revise and reconsider before I can make a Top 10, 20, 25 or maybe even 30 episodes, which will be the definitive list of best episodes.

This is the current total ranking of all 7 seasons of MacGyver. There has been a few changes throughout the list. Passages dropped three places because of The Stringer and Good Knight MacGyver part 1 and 2. Falling just out of the top 10 at the 12th place is Obsessed. Just like season 6, season 7 is rather scattered over the 5-star ranking. Honest Abe found his way in the 4-star ranking below Deep Cover. The Colton is up top of the 3-star ranking episodes and dangling down at the bottom where it belongs keeping MacGyver's Women company is Split Decision. Again this is only the current total ranking. There are still two tv-movies coming, which admitted may not change that much but they will find their place in the ranking and another current total ranking will follow once it's complete. After that I'm going to revise everything and re-rank them for the final ranking and then I can make definitive top list of episodes.

Here is the ranking of both tv-movies. I don't know if there's much I can say about this except it's either the one or the other but Lost Treasure of Atlantis is definitely the most fun one. It has action and adventure in it like an Indiana Jones movie. The first 25 minutes from the start until their escape from the Balkans is one rollercoaster ride before we get to breath a bit in London when MacGyver and Kelly reunite. Just when get our breath back, we are treated to a riveting chase through London when the artefacts are stolen. With the stolen artefacts stolen but with a new ally in tow the adventure continues to where we find the Torch of Truth in the caves of Exeter. Only to find ourselves betrayed by none other then Professor Atticus himself. A betrayal no one saw coming and maybe one of the best betrayals in the series. But a decision reversed once they get the artefacts back and escape from Cleeve's estate. Once they reach Greece another unpleasant surprise awaits them as apparently Cleeve and Zavros got there sooner and attacked Kelly's grandfather Simon. When they finally reach the volcano the movie takes it up a notch where the group makes discovery after discovery and the Lost Treasure of Atlantis theme song is being used to the fullest. This is Ken Harrison at his best. We fall from one awe moment into the other only to Cleeve's disappointment that the treasure of Atlantis is knowledge and not gold. After Mac gets into a scuffle with Cleeve, the latter meets his fate to a fiery and watery death. As the entrance way collapses, the only way out is upwards and MacGyver wouldn't be MacGyver if he can't figure a way out and makes one of the most impressive MacGyverisms ever supported by one of the coolest musical cues in the entire series. From the moment of getting everything ready to get it launched up to the top of the volcano, to each character having their ride on the rope. This adventure movie is just good old fashioned fun and it has everything you want from MacGyver. Plus he is doing A LOT in this movie. Escaping the holding cell, rigging up the car with rockets to escape the base in the Balkans, getting the ropes loose in the caves of Exeter, creating a diversion in Cleeve's estate (something we haven't seen in a long time), making a plane fly with only his knife, to the big escape in the volcano. It's almost a shame that we'll never know how they got out of the ruins in Thera in the beginning. Or maybe it's just an interesting thing to keep us guessing.

Trail To Doomsday is another great movie and there was even a time I would've chosen this one over Lost Treasure of Atlantis. It's a totally different genre. We go from action/adventure to basically a crime movie filled with twists and turns and you don't know who you can trust, which turns out to be no one. The tone in this one is significantly darker and MacGyver is completely alone in this one. You can see how Paul's death affects him. There are more scenes set at night and for the majority of the film also the score is darker. A birthday party ends up in a shooting, killing one of his friends and he takes it quite personally. You can also see the emotion in his face during the funeral scene, which is one of my favorite scenes and one of the saddest in the entire series. It's probably the trumpet you here and is a basically a throwback to the bridge scene in There But For The Grace also written by John Considine. But at this point we still have no clue what we are getting ourselves into as MacGyver has to infiltrate the terrorist scene in Britain, proving himself in a fight and is even asked to shoot and kill somebody... which he of course didn't do but earns him a private meeting. He is asked to retrieve evidence in the sewers at night and this might lead to the darkest scenes in all of MacGyver. He's walking around in the sewers with a flashlight, in the middle of the night and the music is very unsettling and just when we find a crucial clue, smokebombs are dropped and he is right in the middle of it and is not immediately out of the sewers either but when he does, he passes out on the street face down in a puddle followed by a nightmarish scene of himself, Paul and Elise. The following morning he's in bed with Natalia, who don't seem to mind the situation. When it's time to get back to work a difficult day follows with unexpected twists and turns and another attempt on MacGyver's life when his car blows up in a cool explosion. As he proceeds his investigation, he is hindered by Chief Superintendent Capshaw who even suspects him and chases him down to the subway. MacGyver thinks Natalia set him up but he's starting to get at wits end. When they meet at night Natalia is shot and MacGyver is chased back into the sewers in another dark scene. When he shakes off his pursuers he falls asleep and leaves the next morning. On his way to Carcroft castle MacGyver hitches a ride with a motorcyclist that delivers him to the castle. Sneaking in, he discovers a nuclear power plant and that both Elise as well as Natalia are still alive. A few new twists comes along with Frederick Moran being the mastermind of it all and Natalia turning on him but she still sets out to kill MacGyver and managing to activate a nuclear bomb. After he punches her lights out, MacGyver saves the day for the last time on screen. Capshaw apologizes to him afterwards and MacGyver and Elise reunite at sunset where they remember Paul and then walk into the crowd.

Despite the darker tone of the second movie, it is a great ending to a great show and both movies are equally great but Lost Treasure of Atlantis feels more like a MacGyver adventure like Legend of the Holy Rose, The Treasure of Manco and Eye Of Osiris while Trail To Doomsday combines the sad tone of There But For The Grace with the intensity of Blind Faith and I think that mostly has to do with the writer John Considine. Anyway this is the ranking of the movies and they will be added to another Current Total Ranking which won't change much of course but once that's settled I'm going to re-rank them all for the Final Total Ranking and then I can do my Best Of episode list.

MacGyver - Lost Treasure of Atlantis made it into place 12 of the list which could be considered rather low but not as low as MacGyver - Trail To Doomsday ended up at place 32 but it still could considered quite high on the total ranking of 141. Anyway this is it for now until I get to the re-ranking which will happen soon and then I can go for my Best Of list. So there will still be a lot switching in the list before they get their permanent places in the ranking.

This is the final total ranking of MacGyver. There are some minor changes brought in the list. Fraternity of Thieves and Fire and Ice have dropped a few places and lost half a star each making Twice Stung the only 3,5 star ranked episode left. And about a dozen episodes has ended up below Phoenix Under Siege starting with The Challenge down to Cleo Rocks, those episodes also dropped in the ratings. Maybe The Challenge deserves to be a bit higher but the reason it dropped along with Easy Target is for my Best Of List I started to look at the top three of each season. For season 4 the originally was On A Wing And A Prayer, Easy Target and The Challenge. But for some reason, I feel that Blood Brothers is an even more personal episode to MacGyver then The Challenge because it's really about him and his past and Brainwashed is one of the last episodes that involves MacGyver, Pete and Jack and without Pete and Jack knowing they're part of an assassination plot which is actually a bit more interesting that simply being at the wrong place at the wrong when terrorists are trying to disable a city or to have it so in your face like in The Challenge.

The only other change is that The Stringer dropped about 8 places making Good Knight MacGyver part 1 and 2 actually my top favorite episode of all time. And why not? Indeed, nostalgia did play a part in this because when I was 7 this was the most of fun episodes I had ever seen even though I never had much with knights. But it's just good old fun and not caring if it makes sense or not, it's just to have a great time, great action pieces: knightly combaat, the lavapit and the escape from it, scaring the dog away and making the kite is just so awesome. It's basically everything that a kid wants even though the whole episode is just a dream. That amount of fun with whatever episodes I had available at the time was hardly ever in any of the other ones. Plus it's also a personal episode to MacGyver because he has to clear his family's name and discovers his own first name. So this makes it final.
