Decided to finally rank the episodes. This is the episode ranking for season 1. I always figured Pilot, Nightmares and The Assassin would make the top three. But also I had to reconsider other episodes like Flame's End and To Be A Man which were episodes I never really liked as a kid but there is a surprising amount of action in those two episodes. There is an undeniable lowpoint starting with The Enemy Within in the last portion of the season before it pulls itself together with the last two episodes. This is it for season 1. Other seasons will follow.

not all that much I'd outright argue with.

Trumbo's World is at least okay and The Prodigal is at least decent to good to me and The Golden Triangle and Ugly Duckling well near the bottom though.

I'll give a few Quick Takes where I like

The Golden Triangle - it's bleak and nondescript, not all that much that makes it MacGyver in feel
The Thief of Budapest - much the same, stock characters and pieces, looks uncanny, cartoonish
The Gauntlet - wonderful, desert escape, great characters, drop in a situation done right
Trumbo's World - timing is weird, characters are weird, old timey feel, but the premise makes up for it
Hellfire - hell yeah, great setting, great premise, fun characters
The Prodigal - one time where the characters and actors carry it, and it's the good kind of generic 80s
Countdown - hell yeah
The Enemy Within - it's a very stock idea with very stock tropes, it plays out well, that's all there is
Every Time She Smiles - also very stock ish. a better Thief of Budapest I guess.
Ugly Duckling - outright bad. problematic character treatment. even in 1986 shouldn't have been made this way. Split Decision did it worlds better only a few years later.

From best to worst.

I actually felt like The Golden Triangle was not particulary a bad episode compared to the Pilot.

Most of these episodes and pretty much every episode in the first ten episodes all have hokey villains. None of them are really scary villains. The first villain that really scared me was Kurt Neilson in Nightmares.

Trumbo's World is also like stereotypical episode with characters you know are going to die.

Ugly Duckling is indeed outright bad but Split Decision is even worse. That's definitely a bottom episode for me.

It's not a good episode (though it's not bad either and I've come to appreciate the feel of season 7) but it's way better about Ronnie than Ugly Ducking is about Kate.

The Thief of Budapest for me is almost unwatchable (between the looped (ADR) dialogue and the stock video used way to much for the car chases...I usually just skip it...

Here are the rankings of season 2. My top two favorite episodes of season 2 were always Three For The Road and Phoenix Under Siege. It was always a hard choice between those two and I have seen definite changes. For starters: Partners. It's their origins story so it obviously belongs on top. Another interesting change was actually Twice Stung which I found much more entertaining now then when I did as a kid. While still a bottom three, it scores higher then I could've imagined. The worst episodes this seasons are Dalton Jack of Spies and Eagles. Dalton Jack of Spies is one of my least favorite Jack Dalton episodes and Eagles is downright terrible.

I love season 2. It's one of the best TV show seasons ever.

Love Eagles. That whole genre of episode just speaks to me. It doesn't really exist anymore.
Jack of Spies is a bit disjointed and has some generic 80s elements but I still love the concept of it. Shadow is easily in the top 2 dress wearing field agents of the show.

Friends is a very rare clip show that really really works. Curtain Call on The A-Team is another. Love Fernando Marin and the cabin couple from Curtain Call.

Have to be a contrarian on Partners, sorry. Too soapy.

The only ones I dislike: The Wish Child, Partners. The only just okay ones: The Road Not Taken, Pirates.

Turboclassics (artistically excellent, great rewatch, great feel good): The Eraser, Final Approach, Jack of Lies, Eagles, Soft Touch, Birth Day.

So many good episodes in season 2. The show at this point really got its stride. Three for the road , the human factor and phoenix under siege are my top 3

This is the current total ranking of the first two seasons of MacGyver. Nightmares is still the number 1 episode for now followed by The Assassin. Pilot dropped one place when Partners took it's place at the third spot followed by six season 2 episodes. Bushmaster, Family Matter and Jack of Lies weasled themselves in the lower ranks between the first season episodes. A Prisoner of Conscience was joined by another six season 2 episodes, making him the only first season episode in that slot. Birth Day, The Wish Child and The Eraser join other season 1 episodes with the same score. Twice Stung is ranked by his lonesome for now. Dalton Jack of Spies joins two other season 1 episodes of the same score but it is ranked the lowest while Eagles is ranked the highest of the lowest scored episodes so far. The rankings and the scores are most likely to change when I proceed through the series.

Here is the ranking of season 3. Top 3, even the top 5 shouldn't be a surprise. Kill Zone was always my top favorite of the third season followed by The Negotiator. While The Negotiator is all over the place and everyone is a target the stakes, the urgency and the threat is much bigger in Kill Zone. Ghost Ship makes a nice well-deserved third place followed by Early Retirement and The Widowmaker. Blow Out didn't make the top 5 but makes a nice sixth place. An interesting note is that most of Jack's episodes or all dangling down near the bottom. Jack In The Box is in my opinion the hardest Jack episode in tone. The setting of the prison camp, the strictness of Bodine and Warden Renfro, Jack getting whipped... I think it's the biggest mess Jack got Mac into. It's like he really went out of line with this one. Also an interesting not is that the top six episodes all came from pretty much the middle portion of the season from between episode 52-59. With The Spoilers still being a strong episode, I do feel the season falls out of breath in the last four episodes. The fact Mask of the Wolf is a treasure hunt episode speaks in it's advantage yet I think this is where Jack is the most annoying and Mac is not hiding it. Or is it almost that RDA is annoyed with Bruce McGill? Maybe it wasn't a good idea to have Jack come back immediately in the following episode then. While not a bad episode it's not a great one, yet interesting that it still gets four stars but this can of course still change as I progress through the series. I think I still have a more or less idea where season 4 might be going but season 5 is going to get a lot harder and season 6 is going to get way harder when it comes to at least 5 star episodes. But this is it for now.

Season 3.

No reason to assume the actors had beef but it doesn't hold up that MacGyver is sometimes not especially sympathetic and gastfreundlich towards Jack and Penny.

Also, by extension, MacGyver is looking down on Two Eagles, which feels sour at the least.

The MacGyver-Jack dynamic has become somewhat infamous. They wanted MacGyver to show some more spontaneous emotion and this was at the time a seemingly good way to do it while not making him a different character.

Also season 3 is interesting because it's also one of the best seasons of any TV show (certainly of an 80s 90s drama show) and there are a few bad episodes in there.

Which, you know, also happens with a classic 22-24 episode season. Peak Seinfeld and TNG had them too.

Usually when people say hit and miss they mean the declining latter seasons of a show but of course a term like that in itself doesn't necessarily mean that.

I always say season 4 is my favorite. It def is because of BC and the more outdoors episode.

Huh? What do you mean? I know Jack and Penny are like the friends many people have but you don't like them to be around all the time. And especially Jack is written that way but to say MacGyver is looking down on Two Eagles is taking it a bit far. I don't have that impression. Why would he do that? I know there is something that never sat right with me in this episode. It's almost like RDA had a difficult week or something and he couldn't hide it. I know their dynamic was supposed to get more spontaneity out of RDA but it didn't seem to work here. I don't think it actually ever worked at all to be honest. Just like the opposite. And I also have the feeling RDA was exactly like this in Easy Target. It's almost like he didn't feel like making the episode but he had to.

This is the current total ranking of the first three seasons of MacGyver. Season 3 has totally dominated and simply taken over the top ranking episodes kicking and dropping Nightmares to the sixth place but some of season 1 episodes are still better then Blow Out. The other remaining season 3 episodes are scattered in the 5 star ranking. Mask Of The Wolf, The Odd Triple and Hell Week have made it to place 2, 3 and 4 respectively in the 4,5 star ranking. The Endangered, Rock The Cradle and Thin Ice are pretty much top, middle and bottom of the 4 star ranking. Joining Twice Stung but below it is Fire and Ice. No changes have been made with the absolute bottom 3 star and 2,5 star episodes rankings.

A long time ago in a galaxy far away I made a program that spits out two episodes at once and then you click on one and it calculates a ranking. (Not just on win-loss but with a formula). It's in Excel though and idk, I need to redo it in some other platform. (I'm not a programmer and I know next to nothing about it.)

Here is the ranking of season 4. Again maybe not so surprising as I always considered On A Wing And A Prayer as the best episode of the season. Easy Target actually did surpass On A Wing And A Prayer momentarily but as wild as I always was on that episode I decided to stay loyal to it. You can not beat MacGyver hanging on a plane that takes off on a river with that cool shot from underneath when it takes off. Easy Target and The Challenge makes a nice second and third place and Brainwashed and Blood Brother a fourth and fifth place finishing in the top 5. As you may notice nearly all episodes have a 5-star ranking with exception of Fraternity of Thieves which I thought to be the weakest episode. An episode that starts so sensitive with all the military secrecy that MacGyver even considers dropping out of the assignment turns out to be a rather dull episode that partly concentrates on Pete because of his son. I do believe both Pete and Michael deserved better storylines especially if it means doing Pete dirty. Not only does Michael betray his father but also his country over something the military wants to keep quiet but it doesn't even seem that much of big deal in the end which makes the episode disappointing. However another interesting turn of events is Gold Rush. It was also never one of my favorites but with the last viewing it seems like the episode has greatly improved, yet it keeps dangling at the bottom three episodes. But in all it was a strong, if not stronger season in it's entirety then season 3. Season 3 had a great middle portion of the season but they still had a few weaker ones that gave it more varying score. Season 4 is a near-perfect season despite the one episode.

This is the current total ranking of the first seasons of MacGyver. Despite a strong season not one episode of season 4 was able to tople the top 5 season 3 episodes, yet 18 out of 19 episodes managed their way in both top, middle and bottom of the 5-star ranking with exception of Fraternity of Thieves who made it between Twice Stung and Fire and Ice. Because of it there is not much else to say as not much has changed. Season 4 sits comfortable among the other seasons but was unable to make any major changes in the rankings.

Here is the ranking of season 5. An interesting season as it starts out strong with the first 9 episodes being action packed to the max and with lots of travelling again. Legend of the Holy Rose is the best season opener in the entire series followed by classics like Cease Fire, Halloween Knights, Children of Light, Black Rhino and The Ten Percent Solution. But then the season starts to get a bit saggy in the middle portion. Two Times Trouble, The Madonna, Live and Learn, Jenny's Chance, Deep Cover and The Lost Amadeus are all episodes that seem to be lacking in action what pretty much drove the most of the first half of the season. Two Times Trouble, The Madonna and Live and Learn are more drama and character driven. Two Times Trouble is like a descend into Carla's madness and she's dragging MacGyver along with her with perhaps the elevator shaft scene as the episode's if not only highlight. What really stands out in that scene is Dennis McCarthy's score who made several memorable cues this season which are mostly heard in Legend of The Holy Rose part 2, The Ten Percent Solution and Two Times Trouble most notably in the elevator shaft. You can hear the music from when Mac crawls over the wall and the fiels of Von Leer's estate and when he's about to shortcircuit the van in The Ten Percent Solution, but also the same music that was used in Legend of the Holy Rose part 2 when he's trying to escape the pendulum torture is used in the elevator shaft. That speaks somewhat in the episode's defense.

The Madonna is just the Christmas episode. Live and Learn is just the series way of telling you should stay in school. An episode I could not agree with when I was a kid myself but as an adult, I see their point now and I couldn't agree more.

Jenny's Chance was another undercover episode and I usually don't like those but watching this episode again, it's clear they all had a great time making this episode and it's also the last time Mac, Jack and Pete are together in an episode. Deep Cover was an episode I usually preferred over Jenny's Chance but it just disappoints to be the 100th episode. It's not anything special despite having one of the coolest escapes in the series, it didn't help the episode to a better score.

If only Jenny's Chance was aired after The Madonna and Deep Cover after The Treasure of Manco instead of Jenny's Chance then Serenity could've been the 100th episode and it would've made a lot more sense that we would have the ensemble cast to celebrate the occassion. Which brings us to The Lost Amadeus, which is about the worst episode I have seen since Eagles. That episode really means nothing to me, hence the low score.

And now the top 3 or 5 or even 10. For a long time I thought Serenity would win and there was a time that I convinced I would choose that episode over Passages because it's a less obvious choice but then also after rewatching Passages not choosing Passages over Serenity would do the episode, the character and the brand not any justice. And the first ten are all personal favorites mostly because of their themes or cast: Passages because he really nearly died this time. Serenity just immerses you into the episode in a way that rarely happens. Nothing beats a good fun treasure hunt like The Treasure of Manco. Halloween Knights is just classic because Mac and Murdoc are working together. Log Jam has I think the most satisfying fight scene in the entire series and the longest. Cease Fire is just a whole lot of fun. Black Rhino touches an important topic on Rhino's and is set in Africa. Legend of the Holy Rose is pretty much our biggest Indiana Jones adventure in the series up until then at least. It was a more varying season than season 4 but therefore it's not lesser season.

Season 5.

This is the current total ranking of all seasons so far of MacGyver. Passages and Serenity has dethroned Kill Zone and The Negotiator of their pole position. Most of the top ranking episodes are season 5 episodes with exception of Kill Zone, The Negotiator and Early Retirement. Two Times Trouble, The Madonna, Live and Learn and Deep Cover have received there places among the 4-star ranked episodes with The Endangered in between The Madonna and Live and Learn and Deep Cover in between Rock The Cradle and The Wish Child. Also a first change has been done there as Countdown received an upgrade for 4 stars to 5 stars and ascended to the bottom 5-star ranked episodes just below Lost Love part 2. A change I intended to make later but it started to feel wrong to have Countdown which is one of the few better episodes in that part of season 1 ranked that low. The Lost Amadeus on the otherhand has joined the lowest ranked episodes at the bottom above Eagles. All I can say is with season 6 coming a lot can happen amongst top ranked episodes. Anything can happen now.
