Epic Fail

The thing about experimentation—it’s a series of failures occasionally punctuated by accomplishment. Without experimentation, we wouldn’t have modern medicine, automobiles, airplanes… let alone physics.

So, in the interest of furthering the evolution of science, an occasional sacrifice must be made. We must learn to embrace our failures… remember our mistakes … learn from them…

… that’s what I tell myself when Mom reminds me about what happened to her new ironing board.

It’s not my fault that the things aren’t built to endure the weight of an 11 year-old—or that they are not particularly buoyant. I did apologize!

Ringer

“Peeeete--”

“You've come out here with me, the least you can do is take a swing.”

“I don't play golf.”

“Come on, Mac... try it once.”

MacGyver sighed and selected one of the clubs at random and walked up to the tee. He sighted carefully down the course. He stuck a finger in his mouth and tested the direction of the wind.

Pete's laughter stopped as the ball shot down the course like a bullet, bounced on the green and dropped into the hole!

“You're right,” Mac said as he handed the club back to frowning Pete, “Golf is fun!”

I can imagine Petes expression on witnessing that!

A hole in one! time to head to the 19th tee - Drinks are on Mac!

MacGyver woke up with a start. He sat up on his sofa and looked toward the thumping sound coming from his kitchen.

“Sorry.” Pete said as he turned off the tap. “I just wanted some water.”

“I just had the weirdest dream” MacGyver said, as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes.

“Well?” Pete asked. “What was it?”

“I was in a square concrete room with this big wheel thing against the wall. There where 3 other people there… and you” MacGyver said looking at Pete “Except, they called you Hammond, and one had a gold symbol on his forehead.”

I did a little drabbling while we were offline . . .

Toaster

You’re gonna have to forget the line about the banana peel and the toaster – or whatever it was. I really do not wander around making bombs out of whatever junk I find lying around – toothbrushes or turnips or whatever. If you stop and count them, I’ve defused way more bombs than I ever built.

It gets kind of annoying, in fact. Every time something goes boom, they look around to see where I am. It got old a long time ago. C’mon, most things don’t explode that easily.

Although, now that I think of it – hand me that toaster, willya?

Permanent Intermission

Mac reclined in the plush opera chair. He listened with silent intensity to his friend belting her heart out on stage. He sat in the ornate main chamber, rife with grand carvings and gold leaf. He barely noticed the slight commotion in one of the upper balconies. In his peripheral, he could see somebody moving about. Mac still left his attention to the program, but his gut was simply unsettled. He knew something was wrong, or was heading that way. He finally turned to see just what was happening. From the shadowy box, a sniper rifle aimed straight at him.

Outrun or outgun?

Mac only heard the empty clap of his tennis shoes to the floor. Moving faster than he ever remembered he could, he dashed randomly through the vast warehouse, trying to stay one step ahead of his pursuers. He turned sharply down a row of crates. As he pulled his leg into the alley, a gunshot echoed. A haze of splinters exploded above his head. Mac pressed on harder. As he continued, he skidded into a room. He shouldered open the door. A gunman simply stared at him. “Can’t we just get along?” Mac managed to ponder. A gunshot rang out.

“Hello, I’m MacGyver. I’m here to tell you about the Phoenix Foundation, where success is a paperclip away,” Mac announced to the camera. Pete chuckled. “CUT!!,” yelled someone as the gathering of cameras stopped rolling. “Well it’s true,” he explained to Pete, off to the side of the “set.”


“These PSA’s are all the same; smile and say ‘don’t do drugs, kids.’ “


“Don’t worry about it. They wedge them between toilet paper and Burger King commercials. I mean even an otherwise unknown actor like Richard Dean Anderson did one. But while I remember, I’m gonna need some more paperclips…”

Gone to Ground II: Need

I can’t explain why I love wilderness. Something about drinking from a spring weeping straight from a stone. Standing in a grove of mossy trees when a sun break spills golden light on your face. Tasting, feeling, belonging to nature. There’s only life out here…above and below and all around.

I live in the city and I love it. I need the people and the feeling I get when I help them. I know belong there.

But the deep woods—this raw country—it doesn’t need me. I need it.

Sometimes I need not to be needed.

Years of Living Dangerously

I never intended to live this dangerously . . . really.

I wanted to see the world, meet new people – folks who wouldn’t be anything like what you find in a small Minnesota town . . . maybe learn a few things, pick up some new skills.

That’s all.

But I’ve noticed – life has a way of upping the stakes on you.

The whole bomb thing just kinda happened by accident. I picked it up as I went along. So . . . let’s face it, I do not have any good excuse for how I ended up here, trying to stave off nuclear annihilation with a tennis racket.

I'll bet Mac wonders why he ever bothered to learn to use tools, what with the fact that he rarely gets to actually USE any! LOL!

But he does get to use them! All the time! Not necessarily as intended, of course . . .

Kid Stuff


Yeah, my mom did get awful mad about it at first. But taking things apart is the best way to learn how stuff works!

It got better after I learned to put everything back together . . . and have it still work. And after I fixed the dishwasher and the TV and her sewing machine – well, she didn’t get mad any more.

Still, knowing how to take things apart can be real useful. You don’t always want them to keep working.

Let’s see – one minute and thirty-five seconds to go, an electronic fuse and a hair-trigger detonator – piece of cake.

Reflexes

Brilliant light assaulted his eyes. Mac’s reflexes took over; arm raised to shield his eyes, he winced away from the direction of the strobe—just as panel of wood beside his face exploded! His head had been there half a second ago!

Splinters of wood bit into his arm and shoulder as he dropped to the floor, rolling and then scrambling to get behind the uncertain protection of a stack of wooden crates. No more bullets followed, however.

Instead, a mocking voice lilted at him from out of the darkness.

“Nice reflexes, MacGyver! I nearly got you that time! Run if you must… but I will get my picture. It makes me smile to imagine Peter Thornton opening the letter containing the photograph of the moment of your death—it will be the high point of my career.

“Run, MacGyver… you’ve got a few seconds while I reload the camera…”

Gone to Ground III: Fish Story

Scratching my beard, wishing for a safety razor, I made my way down to the pond. Fed by glaciers, the water was cold and refreshing as I drank from my cupped hands. I shook my reddened fingers to return circulation before I dipped my bucket.

The water was so clear that I could see fish swimming lazily near the roots of the old willow, taunting me with their laconic movements. I'd have to return with my pole later to meet their challenge, but experience had taught me they weren't as slow as they like to pretend.

Oh, joy -- Lothi-drabbles and Scruffy Mac. What could be better?

The only thing that could be better would be to be out there in the woods WITH Mac...

Okay! Ive got it bad..blame it on the hormones...

**Sharpens claws on tree and slinks through bushes to find a good Mac watching place...Puuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.......**
