Thanks Loth! I needed a little slice of serenity! I've got a drabble stuck and it just won't cooperate!

Mission: Eucalyptus

I’m sitting so close I’m almost in the fireplace. Wrapped up in my thickest blanket, wearing my warmest clothes. There’s a black wool scarf wrapped round my neck like a python. I learned to dress for the weather back home, but when the cold is INSIDE… you can only do so much.

If I sneeze once more, my head will fly off. Time to pull out the big guns, as Grandma Jackson would have said. She had a special recipe to cure this kind of misery. One whiff of it would clear the most stubborn sinus.

I hate being sick.

I was just thinking in the wee hours this morning while my kitten was stubbornly keeping me awake..."We haven't had a Drabble in a while!" After 3 sleepless hours and a few scratches from putting MacTiger out of bed more than once...I needed one. Mine's still stuck, so I've put it aside to work on my fanfic.

That Drabble that was stuck? It finally came out!

Ambience
I tossed my gear to the side, pulled the door shut. What was going on?

A table spread with a feast, glowing candelabras, fine china, even a bronze cupid poised with bow and arrow... And Murdoc.

“Don’t worry, MacGyver, you’ll see me again…”

Of course I’m not happy to see him. Murdoc only shows up when he wants something. Usually me dead. I wasn’t sure our last encounter had changed that...but I have to admit...I was curious.

Harry said to me once, “Curiosity might’ve killed the cat, but he was smarter than the average cat when he died.”

And another came along with it. This one's a product of my nitpicking nature... I said in the nitpicks that I thought Sam's reaction to MacGyver getting shot and falling into the cargo hold of the ship in The Stringer was a bit understated. Someone else gave me some good reasons to rethink that...so I explored a little.

Dad
Sam approached the doorway, searching for Chung.

Suddenly, MacGyver’s voice rang out in warning. His head spun toward the sound. A gunshot split the air overhead and echoed in his ears as MacGyver disappeared over the cargo hold rail. The bone-jarring crash an eternity later stole his capacity to breathe.

He’d found his dad and he was barely used to the idea...then one moment of foolish need for vengeance. He should have listened.

Sam stepped through the portal. His voice seemed unable to process the warring fear and anger inside...

“Dad...”

The gun clattered to the deck, revenge forgotten.

Frozen Controls

I could feel adrenaline washing into my bloodstream like ice water. My hands were shaking on the controls and my pulse was hammering madly, but none of the stuff seemed to reach my head. My eyes were locked on the grey pinwheel outside of the canopy, patches of blurred green resolving into individual trees as I watched, paralyzed.

Finally the voices of the kids reached my numbed ears, and with all my strength I pulled back on the steering column, easing the throttle to avoid a stall. We leveled out, but I think I left my heart somewhere back there.

Worth It

Strange, how I never take the time to reflect on my tendency toward taking chances… until I’m actually taking them. And what a time to get philosophical, while I’m hanging from the underside of a rising elevator with no idea how I’m going to get down once I’m up! One problem at a time… that’s my motto.

I think I need to change my motto.

Jack has a chance to get to know his mother. I hope he takes it. I’d go through all this and ten times worse for a chance to spend five more minutes with my mother.

Ghost Walk

I told Pete and Phelps that this was like walking through a graveyard… but that’s not strictly true. I felt like I was a ghost walking through a dead world. The bodies of animals lay everywhere, and there was only a thin plastic shield between them and me. Between whatever killed them and me.

Still, it wasn’t until the Firestorm aircraft roared overhead that I actually felt the tremors of real fear. Death in the woods—even by a deadly mutant super-bug—was preferable to being toasted like a wiener that has rolled off of the grill into the fire!

Wow, very vivid, like I was him!

Eau d’Leo II

The breeze is stiff today, whipping the crests of the waves into foam and lifting them into the air. Lazy birds ride the surf. They look like little boats against the brilliance of the evening sky.

Sun setting beyond the breakwater bathes the entire bay in a golden-orange light. The piles stand out like black fingers in the sea with the smell of salt comes blowing cold.

The water laps against the piles in rhythm, while the wind and the laconic voices of the birds take up the melody.

I wonder if I can pick this out on my guitar.

Tell a Friend

Some guys take art classes to pick up women. I’m not like that… not really. I didn’t even notice her until she knocked her brushes onto the floor. I’ve seen other beautiful women, and I’ve seen better painters, but I haven’t met anyone with such close interests to my own, before ever I knew her name.

I felt like a school boy shyly asking for a date. She didn’t actually agree to go out for ‘coffee’ with me, but she did smile. I take that as a good sign.

Her name? Oh, it’s Deborah. Wait ‘til you meet her, Pete!

Priorities

I love to go hiking through unexplored wilderness. You begin to get more in touch with your values… learn what’s really important to you… kinda sort through your priorities in life.

There is no drink finer than clean, clear water from a mountain spring, or any meal that tastes better than freshly caught salmon grilled over a fire!

And when a bear catches scent of your fresh salmon and chases you up a tall tree, you begin to sort through your priorities and your values very carefully…

... and you also begin to wish that you’d gone skiing instead of hiking!

Adrenaline

I’ve never considered myself a spy… but I guess I can see how some jump to that conclusion. I’ve spent more time in East Germany than I have in Washington DC—which is hilarious if you think about it!

I’m just trying to get my mind off of things; I’ve been ducking and hiding from the KGB, and we’ve all been dodging the German agents who don’t seem picky about who they’re shooting at. The border is locked up so tight, the guards are frisking peoples’ shadows!

One thing I’ll say about this job… there’s never any lack of excitement!

Morocco Blues

Getting into Libya had been easy...too easy. Getting the list of names and the capsules containing the samples of the experimental energy research went off like clockwork... I even had time to stop and buy a souvenir for Pete. I left the country like I was going out for a walk, breezing over the border into Morocco right under the noses of the Security Forces.

It was so easy, I guess I dropped my guard... I mean, every job can't go wrong every time…right?

Then the bad luck that I'd been outrunning caught up with me in a big way!

Emergency Exit

Mac closed the door behind him, tossing his satchel aside. All he wanted was to fall asleep watching ‘Guns of Larado’. But there was something in mailbox, and Mac’s curiosity could stave off the worst jet-lag imaginable.

Using his pocketknife, he opened the box and found Valentine candy with an invitation to dinner… unsigned.

Which girl sent this? Mac wondered. The list of possibilities was long and rather daunting. He picked up the phone and dialed quickly.

“Pete, got any assignments for me? I need to leave the country for a couple of days… at least until after February 14th!”

Everybody have a happy Valentines Day tomorrow!!

It's been FOREVER since I've drabbled. Here's a cheater from the fic I've been writing... mutated, of course.

Red Winds

I should have been more inquisitive when I was talking to the boys at the Pentagon... but asking questions around that place was a little bit like rowing a boat with a pitchfork; no matter how much effort you put into it, you’re not gonna get anywhere.

So now I'm sitting here, rattling and wondering, as the 'copter slowly descends through the buffeting Santa Ana winds coming hot out of the desert, and I keep turning the problem over and over in my mind like one of those crazy puzzles with all the colored squares.

Was this really an accident?

Shiny

Hypnotists aren’t supposed to be able to make you do anything that you wouldn’t normally do, but I’ve witnessed my friend Jack Dalton doing the ‘cluck-like-a-chicken act’, and seriously… that was not normal!

Nobody’s ever been able to do that to me. They try; they fail. Sometimes they try real hard, but they always have to give up.

Guess I’m just not someone who can be mesmerized. It’s one of the things that make me so popular around the Pentagon water cooler when a courier mission to a politically delicate country comes up.

Nice watch you’ve got, though... is it Swiss?
