Chapter One
Preparing the party
Christmas Eve
December 24th 2005

Another winter in town. It was cold in L.A. and that’s very unusual. It’s been a very unusual year too and hard. Especially for MacGyver, since the death of his beloved friend Peter Thornton. This is his first Christmas without Pete since the day they’ve met 25 years ago. They’ve celebrated the existence of their 25 year long friendship. Not long after Pete died for reasons MacGyver doesn’t want to talk about. His mother passed away around this time of year too of a stroke. This Christmas stuff gets a little sappy after a while. Anyway since Pete passed away MacGyver took over at the Phoenix Foundation. He’s the big boss now and his son Sam Malloy moved up to his father’s position he was at when Pete was still alive. The loss of his friend was awful just like with his mother when he was in Afghanistan. MacGyver never really liked celebrating Christmas. Not until 1992 when he met his son. Their first Christmas together was just the two of them remembering their first meeting and the memories they had of Kate. Then the next 12 Christmases were great, they appeared to get better with their friends; Pete, Jack, Penny, Billy Colton. Sometimes there was even a big party at the Phoenix Foundation. Well… every Christmas had a little magic. Since MacGyver became head of field operations at Phoenix he decided to support the greater good as he does usual around this time of year. A few days ago he called Cynthia Wilson at the Challengers Club, to organise a party for the kids of the neighbourhood. Cynthia agreed immediately. The Challengers Club would get decorations, a stage, hot wine, and a gigantic Christmas tree. Cynthia couldn’t agree more. Since the death of her husband Booker she only had the Challengers Club left, but she pulled through with a little help of MacGyver and US Marine RT Hines. Anyway it’s another December 24th and things need to get fixed for tonight. There’s a lot going on in the Challenger’s Club. A Christmas tree was set and the kids and a few older teens were putting decorations in the tree. Christmas music is playing through the boxes of a big installation. MacGyver is making the last adjustments of the stage. Suddenly everybody got startled of a racket in the back. Somebody made quite an entrance. It was Sam who came in, dragging a steel pole along. The pole seemed very heavy. Sam was pulling on it to get it inside. The end got stuck between the doors. Sam pulled harder and harder and sighed. He took a breather and started pulling again. MacGyver came towards him.
‘Sam, what are you doing?’ he asked.
‘I’m trying to…,’ he grunted, ‘get this…, in.’
‘Well, Sam, you don’t wanna pull too hard because…’
Before MacGyver got finished, Sam pulled really hard that the pole released it’s attachment in the middle, making him fall over.
‘Whoops.’
Sam landed on his back.
‘… the pole might get loose,’ MacGyver finished his sentence. ‘You alright, son?’
‘Yeah.’
MacGyver reached out his hand and Sam took it to get up.
‘Let’s get this installed.’
‘You wanted disco lights, you got them. I just have to get them back in time before they find out I stole it.’
‘What?’
‘I’m just kidding, dad.’
‘Ah, I hope so.’
MacGyver and Sam each took a part and putted it on the stage, there they installed it again. Cynthia came to take a look.
‘How’s it going, boys?’ she asked.
‘Swell,’ Sam answered.
‘Yeah, all we need to do is to get the lights to work. Won’t be no problem,’ MacGyver said. ‘Got any news from our special guests?’
‘I called, yeah.’
‘Long distance call?’ Sam asked.
‘Yeah.’
‘So what’d they say?’ MacGyver asked again.
‘Everything is still the same as last time I called so I assume everything will be alright.’
‘That’s fine.’
‘Yep. I guess the Challengers Club will finally have a decent Christmas.’
‘We always have Cynthia,’ Sam smiled.
‘Yeah, but this year we don’t have money issues. Well, we can always still use some money but we have enough to pull through. MacGyver, it was a very nice idea to send the money, we’ll earn tonight to the children’s hospitals around the state and our neighbour states.’
‘Yeah, well you know me.’
‘That’s right. You care for others, that’s what the Challengers Club is all about.’
‘Yeah. Sam, hand me that screwdriver from the toolbox.’
Sam gave his father the screwdriver while he climbed on top of a ladder to screw a screw of the disco lights.
‘Oh, by the way, MacGyver,’ Cynthia said.
‘Yeah?’
‘The store called, you can go and pick up the presents.’
‘Right.’
‘Dad, you want me to go?’
‘If you can manage it.’
MacGyver began to lose his balance on the ladder. He was standing on the highest step. A misstep and down he went.
‘Ooh!’
Smack, he went against the floor.
‘You ok, dad?’
‘Yes,’ he lied while getting up.
‘MacGyver you don’t really look too good, maybe it’s better you go and lay down for a while,’ Cynthia said a little worried.
‘No, it’s not necessary, I’m fine,’ he said with a painful expression on his face. ‘I’ll go get the presents, it’s safer.’
He putted his back straight up again, making a cracking sound.
‘Ouch,’ Sam whispered.
‘Sam, you coming?’
‘No, this light needs to get installed.’
‘I did that before I fell.’
‘They’re not on yet, I’ll do that, you go and get the presents.’
‘OK, then, see ya in a bit.’
MacGyver placed his back straight up again one more time making another cracking sound. ‘Mmm, that’s better,’ he mumbles.
‘Dress warmly,’ Sam shouted at his father.
MacGyver just waved back at him and went outside. It was getting dark already, lights were on the street, everybody was getting prepared for Christmas eve. He got in his car, the yellow pick-up truck which stood besides his jeep. He drove up to the store to pick the presents up. Enough room in the back for the presents. Quickly he placed everything in the back of the car and drove back to the Challengers Club. A few kids were still outside.
‘Hey kids, wanna help me out with this?’
‘Yeah, come on guys, let’s help MacGyver a little huh?’ one of the kids said.
’Twenty-five packages to carry upstairs.’
MacGyver himself took three packages up the stairs. He was quickly followed by the kids who helped him.
‘Just place them under the tree, fellas.’
‘You got it.’
The kids did what MacGyver said.
‘You were quick, dad,’ Sam said.
‘Well, the pick-up is a fast car. So how’s things going here?’
‘Just fine, almost finished with the lights,’ Sam said. ‘Now this cable and it’s finished.’
Then suddenly Sam got electrocuted of his messing with the electricity.
‘AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!’
‘Sam, let go of the cable!’ MacGyver screamed in panic.
‘I can’t, I’m stuck to it! AAAAAHHHH!!!!!’
Sam’s hair began to rise, blue electrical power surges went through his body.
‘Oh, for god sakes,’ MacGyver sighed and tried to pull Sam off the cable. Instead he got electrocuted too. ‘AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!’
Also Mac’s hair began to rise and the power surges were send to his body too. ‘MMMMAAAYYYYYDDDDDAAAAYYY!!!’ MacGyver screamed.
‘Oh, my God!!’ Cynthia screamed. ‘Somebody help them.’
One of the bigger kids around went to the rescue.
‘I’ll help them,’ he said. ‘Whoops,’ he tripped over something.
Then a small explosion occurred and blew Sam and MacGyver away. The power went out.
‘MacGyver? Sam? Are the two of you alright?’ Cynthia asked in the dark.
No response.
‘Just wait, the emergency power will come on in a minute.’
A minute later there was some small light again in the Challengers Club.
‘Kids, children don’t worry, we’ll get this fixed as soon as possible,’ Cynthia said reassuring.
MacGyver and Sam got up slowly.
‘Wow, what a shock!!’ MacGyver said shocked.
Their faces were black and their hair stood straight up.
‘Nice haircut, dad.’
‘Yeah, you too, son.’
Both MacGyver and Sam were shocked latterly.
(Fade out)

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.
Sometimes you just have to die a little inside to be reborn and rise again as a stronger and wiser version of you.
It's better to be a little sad than to be fake content.
