This is a good episode if not excellent but I voted for good. This is one of the seasons best episodes. Great seasons finale. But I think there's a MAJOR plothole in this episode or at least a BIG mistake. Remember Pete saying that Mac knew about the asylum, that he saved somebody there last year??? Think of Prisoner of Conscience. Asylum?? The asylum in Prisnor of Conscience was in Leningrad, Russia, the asylum in this episode was set in Czechoslovakia. Unless I'm missing something here that is a big mistake.

Episode 44: For Love or Money
Isnīt it *really* convenient that this Russian activist is a captive in the same mental institution as the writer in A prisoner of conscience?

I think I'm right. They say it's the same mental institution as in A prisoner of conscience, but it's wrong cause if it was the same instition shouldn't they be talking Russian instead of Czechoslovakian? I checked the world map. Leningrad is near Sint-Petersburg. And didn't they escape to Austria later on? If they went to the original place as in season 1 it would've taken a long long time to escape from Russia to Austria, don't you think. So I'm right.

QUOTE (MacGyver Jun 20 2005 @ 08:17 AM )
I don't think it was a matter of convenience. I thought it was nice for continuity to have MacGyver revisit the same mental hospital in this episode. But I had to go for just "OK" on "For Love or Money". I haven't seen this episode a lot of times. It's pretty good, but not a real stand out episode to me. However, it is fun to see MacGyver clashing with this woman on their values and then having to work with her. I guess it was a pretty good closer for the second season and I did like the reference to "A Prisoner of Conscience", so that was cool. sak.gif duct.gif

Diana! Yeah, such a Nikki-like character.

I voted good for this one. itīs not really one of my favorites, but itīs a good episode. my favorite scene is when Mac fights with the "toy" at the end of the episode. he has a lot of luck when he manages to catch the knife into the tube. biggrin.gif

Oh my gosh macgyvergod.. you are right! I didn't even notice.. smile.gif I voted good.. this was a really good episode. Mac did not like that lady he had to work with. I didn't like her either. All she cared about was her money. word1.png

laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif You're too funny!

I voted good for this one, because it isn't one of my favorites. I loved the friction between Mac and Diana--I thought that was great! And MacGod--I think you're right about the asylum, though I thought it was cool to at least attempt the tie back for continuity. I used to be an avid Stephen King fan (don't know if I should admit that!!) and he was always referring back to characters and places in his former books and it made it believable and realistic--almost like talking with an old friend and they say "Remember when..." and you're like "Oh yeah!"

QUOTE (Amy Jun 20 2005 @ 11:13 PM )
Oh--another note I fogot to say--I think DOA MacGyver would have been the better season closer.

QUOTE (MacGyverGod Jun 21 2005 @ 03:39 AM )
Why?

QUOTE ( Amy Jun 21 2005 @ 06:54 AM )
Ya had to call me on that didn't ya? I think it was mostly the over all feel of the ep. I thought the suspense in DOA was great and Mac's struggle at the end who he had been told he was vs. what Pete was telling him. The whole character of Mac goes against what Mac was told and what he was intending to do and I thought the tension between the two was great. Let me watch For Love or Money again and get back to ya--I have to admit I was a little distracted while watching that one the last time!

QUOTE (Amy Jun 21 2005 @ 01:54 PM )
OK MacG--Watching it again I have to say this is a really good ep. I'm still torn as to which I think would have been a better closer--not that it matters much--it's done anyway! smile.gif

There were a lot of good things in FLOM--great MacGyverisms--I had to laugh about hitting the car to make it start--of course it worked cuz Mac did it! And electrifying the vehicle was good, too. I love that he bought the truck instead of just taking it--"I don't work that way." Always stands for his principles, even in a pinch. Also the twist with the guy's wife at the end was good. If I could vote again, I think it'd be "Excellent!" (to quote Bill and Ted just for you MacGyver! LOL!)

QUOTE (MacGirl Jun 21 2005 @ 07:32 PM )
I voted OK. It wasn't my favorite ep, either. I don't really know why, but maybe it was Diana. She didn't have any real morals, as far as I could tell. Well, I partly take that back... towards the end she seemed to become a little more moral. Diana did kind of remind me of Nikki Carpenter. (In fact, I had been thinking that this ep had been Nikki's first appearance. Obviously, I was mistaken, but... The difference I see between Nikki and Diana is that Nikki did have a sense of right and wrong, whereas Diana was only in it for the money.) Also, I guess I found it kind of repetitive... it seemed like they were repeating A Prisoner of Conscience with a weaker plot. There was some good humor in it though.

I have to agree with Amy that DOA: MacGyver would have made a much better season closer. The tension was better, and it had more... I don't know... flash and bang to it. It was more fun.

Yeah, I think we needed more Mac vs Pete situations. They had to push it more to the extreme. Like in Xena, but of course that's a different series. Hmm, this gives a few new topics ideas. But those are for later.

A weaker plot? I think this episode was way better then A Prisoner of Conscience, nice boat chase scene in that episode though. In this well, it's very rare that MacGyver takes a trip out of the country in the second scene and comes back in the same episode about 10 to 15 minutes near the end. This concept was slightly redone in The Wall. Nice twist though. She really had me going and Mac does a nice stunt in the zoo but what if he fell on the wrong guy or worse what if he didn't fell on the guy all. He jumps and falls right besides the guy, must be a bad landing.

QUOTE (Amy Jun 22 2005 @ 03:52 AM )
Yeah, I agree, MacG--I think the plot in FLOM was stronger than POC--especially with the twist at the end. Both good ep's, though!

For Love or Money...

Overall a pretty good episode. Diana seemed to be a pretty sneaky woman, if Mac's temper had anything to say about it. Makes me curious as to how ELSE she conned him. What is it about Mac that attracts all these less than savory women? LOL Thats what I want to know! What amazes me about this episode is that he doesnt keep a dime of that money. Now in all fairness I know that the Phoenix Foundation pays his bills and all that...(though why they just dont put him on the payroll Ill never know, I did it in my fanfic world) but youd think he'd at least keep a little, maybe 10% or something. But I guess thats what makes Mac...Mac!
I have to admit though, I thought that the gold ring on his finger sort of added something...I can certainly seem MacGyver married, (I gave him a wife in my fan fic serious) Cant any of you all see it to?

PS. For all of you curious, I'm a girl LOL. wink.gif

Mac had a ring in that episode???? I never saw him with one, a gold bracelet on the other hand.
I gave him a wife too in my fanfics. Don't tell me that wife you gave him is Maria Romburg whom he had to rescue in the South-American jungle shortly after the wedding.
MacGyver getting married in the show now that's a big joke, in fanfics you can do whatever you want with them.

Gosh darn it!
I saw this episode this afternoon and I too did notice the ring.
I wasn't exactly sure if I was just seeing this or if it really was there.
But I'm glad someone slese noticed it too.
Where did it come from?? Did they explain it?
I must admit I had a hangover this afternoon, so I didn't really pay attention to all the details, but I quite clearly saw a ring.
Which, in a few scenes later was gone. What the....?

Good episode. I liked the plot, characters and macgyverisms. Plot twist at the end was good, but best thing in this episode was when Mac taped the GRU agent's eyes.

Diana was a professional mercenary that Mac had worked with and she crossed him--they did the same thing with the character of Natalie in Gold Rush. Except Natalie was a Soviet, Diana was an American. Remember the zoo scene between Mac and Diana--it explains.

This isn't my absolute favorite, but I thought it was good, especially for a clip show. It did let both Rick and Dana put some pretty intense emotion into their performances. We don't usually see Pete that upset and vulnerable, or see Mac act that tender towards him. They're good friends, yes, but my guess is that with Pete, not showing emotion is a generational thing (as well as the fact that he's used to being in charge), and for Mac, well, it's hard to see a friend go through that. I wouldn't be surprised if both actors channeled their actual feelings about the situation into their characters.

The notes were an interesting twist; they certainly could have been from any one of their former enemies, and then it turned out they were from Connie. It does provide a glimpse at how context can shade the written word; if Pete had suspected the notes were from her in the first place, his reaction would probably have been very different.

We also pick up a tidbit about Pete: he hates being called by his given name.

As some of you have already mentioned, there are many plot twists in this episode!

I might have missed something, but I also thought this hospital was meant to be the very same mental institution they infiltrated in Russia, during the first season. But in that case there are lot of major plot holes. The hospitals are (obviously!) situated in different countries, internally, they certainly don't look the same--and foremost, wouldn't it pose a great risk to Mac just to enter without disguise--someone definitely should have recognized him! (Ok, I know, security seems to be generally weak no matter where in the world they are... rolleyes.gif wink.gif)

I understand why Mac must have been annoyed with Diana, they reasoned very differently. Which of course adds a lot of comic relief from the fact that they're are supposed to be on a honeymoon. biggrin.gif
But in the end, it appeared like she finally started to see things a little more from Mac's perspective. The scene at the zoo when she revealed those secrets about her background was very touching.

Compared to "D.O.A. MacGyver" I do agree with the fact that D.O.A. should have been a better season closer. I'm a sucker for MacWhumpage, I know... so that might be part reason why. wink.gif

Will vote "Good", but I don't find this episode to be among the best.

I actually really like this episode. Good light-hearted adventure with plenty of humor.

This episode must have some of the best one liners from the season, if not the whole show.

"I wanted something which wouldn't attract attention." -Diana
"Even when they see us pushing it down the road?" -MacGyver

roller.gif

Did anyone else think the Diana/MacGyver dynamic was almost exactly like the Nikki/Mac dynamic in season 3? The way they outwardly don't like each other, or approve of their ways of working, but deep down have a respect for each other and still get the job done - in a moonlighting kind of way. laugh.gif

I would have really liked to have seen Diana return in other episodes. Maybe that's where the Nikki character originated?

I agree about Diana being so similar to Nikki, later in GX-1 there is a similar opening scene of not wanting to work with her, and then having to go pose as a honeymoon couple right after - I actually mis-remembered FLOM being the first Nikki episode. I like Nikki better though, she has a better rapport with RDA.

In those really old comments about Mac wearing a wedding ring - I saw it too, but it was because they were posing as a honeymoon couple. Once they were through the border he didn't need it anymore.

I voted excellent, good dynamic, nice plot shift and twist. I like DOA a lot but I think this was a better finale, since it was more classic Mac.
