It was still very early then. Maybe that kick was more like: 'Let try something cool.'
Mac was doing karate (or another martial arts sport) in The Wish Child and he had the yellow belt. So he sure was no amateur. I think he shows most of those skills in the Chinese episodes if there was a fight in. He used that pole in Murderers' Sky with the necessary experience and in The Stringer he also showed some brief skills in the warehouse and on the ship. The ship was simple block, block, punch, punch thing, but he seemed very skilled at it.
