Every week I will be posting a new topic titled "Episode Discussion". In this we will discuss an episode, what we liked about it, what we didn't like, etc.
Episode 33 - Three for the Road

I like this one--voted good. The old actor guy was played well. Comical yet pathetic.
It was sad seeing that beautiful car get gradually torn apart, but then it was also interesting seeing all the different uses for the parts that Mac comes up with.
Making the cannon out of the car muffler was a really cool MacGyverism. The ending was good too.

This is one of those episodes that really had a lot of charm to it--and action, too! I love how he tore up the car, and every time he wrecked something else on it, he'd say, "I'll buy you a new one." That's the MasterCard commerical I would have liked to see! Just shots of him getting people out of problems by using their personal items and then saying, "I'll buy you a new one," each time he breaks something of theirs! Then, they could use the typical narration they use in those commericals: "Ballpoint pen $$$". You get the idea. I think that would've been a cute way to do that commercial.
Anyway, back on topic, I also loved the old couple. I thought they were sweet. The lady reminded me of my grandmother--elegant and charming. I liked how MacGyver made paper flowers for Guy Roberts to give to her.
The fight scene with that jerk that placed his beer on the classic car was funny--loved it when MacGyver flinches and says, "Don't hit me!" How many action heroes are occasionally afraid to get hit like that? MacGyver's smart. I'm sure being punched isn't a pleasant experience. My stepdad used to box, and he told me it feels like your body is shattering like glass when you're hit.

The first time I saw this ep, I didn't like it very much. I think it has to do with Richard Hatch as a bad guy. I had such a crush on him during his Battlestar Galactica days!
But now it is one of my favourite eps! Lots of MacGyverisms, some insight into Mac's dysfunction (when he thinks Guy is talking about his car when he's distressed about June being angry with him). Guy and June are just too cute together!
The character Tony Sullivan intregued me, so much so that I had to write a story about how he and Mac met, and what happened that he had saved Mac's life twice in one week. The fact that he was in the Mob and a friend of Mac's... that was too interesting!
I loved how Mac kept apologizing as he slowly dismantled the car, trying to save them, and when he gave it back, fully restored! I still laugh heartily at the "Thththththread!" line, every time I watch.

Just watch this episode today, I really enjoy watching it I love the part when Mac use muffler and make cannon out of it and shoot with him.

Sometimes the uncontrollable urge to mess with people outweighs the millstone of humility.
This is really a quite charming episode! I just love the British accent, and Loth is right, the couple is very cute and it is also believable that they have a long marriage with ups and downs and are still attracted to each other.
It was also a sweet little scene when Mac got that autograph, and June thanked him for playing along.
Somehow Guy and his wife and car look like from last century, but I always had a soft spot for elderly gentlemen with manners.

Today when I watched this episode and the name Tony Sullivan popped up I thought: "Didn't I once read a story written by Lothithil about him?" I'm somehow terrible of remembering names when they are only told on TV once or twice, but I do remember names that I have read in a story!

There were also a few times where he just ripped something off, as he usually does, already thinking what he would do with it, and only after Guy gave him a look he would apologize. Loved the scene where June said Guy should look onto the road, so that he would not see Mac cutting his seats Poor car really looked battled in the end.

See, that's something that just can't be translated in German. In the dubbed version it's just an ordinary thread, and you wonder why they all are laughing in the end.
I just heard this pronunciation for the first time!

(Murdoc) Does anyone have a knife?? Yes...it has lots of different blades (Macgyver music plays while mac examines the knief) ...I know Why are you taking your pants off?? You got a better idea? I'm still trying to figure out what yours is!!

Today when I watched this episode and the name Tony Sullivan popped up I thought: "Didn't I once read a story written by Lothithil about him?"
*G* This seems to be my day for touting Lothi's work! If you're having any difficulty in locating the story, it's here: "Unbreakable Camels".
Yes, Lothi, I promise I'll make you a camel icon! First, we gotta find a camel.
As for the episode: I really like it. I mentally think of it as "1001 Uses for an Increasingly Dead Convertible". It's reminiscent of the opening gambit "The Map", but they pushed the idea out farther.
And I did like the theatre couple; I especially liked the scene in which Guy Roberts, who had been regretting MacGyver's decimation of his lovely car, ended up wreaking the final bit of havok himself -- snapping off the antenna and using it as an épée.

I thought this episode was pretty good. I think it's cute how Mac is constantly trying to patch things up between husband and wife. I haven't watched it in awhile, so I will have to revisit it to make more comments, but I do seem to remember it being quite funny as Mac is forced to basically destroy that car in order to escape with their lives.
This episode was just plain honest to goodness cute I thought it was very very fun yet still exciting with some action. I loved the end where the old guy used the antenna as a sword. Also liked when Mac threw the garbage can lid like a frisbee and creamed the bad guy and was like "wow, it worked". That was a great moment

Many neat elements combined in this episode. Some of you have already mentioned the "don't hit me!" scene... I really liked it too! Once again, it shows what a human hero MacGyver actually is.
The old couple is very sweet, and you'd definitely think they've been married for a long time, well aware of each others strengths and weaknesses.
I must admit I found it very amusing (and believable) to see Mac actually give up on fixing the rental car--this time the paper clip trick didn't work. Adds a little realism too--you can't succeed all the time, *even* if you are MacGyver. I found it a little odd though that he just deserted the car with the doors and the hood wide open. Oh, well, he'd probably just say "Oh, by thy way, Pete, that rental car broke and I told them you're paying for it..."
I had a bit of a hard time watching what he did to that old car--though I know it was necessary to escape the bad guys, it still hurt. I own a veteran car myself--(of the same color but a less fancy brand), and I know how devastated I'd be, had anyone been messing with it. I openly admit that even though the situation would require such actions, part of me would have screamed, or at least cringed, if I had to watch it being torn apart...
Like Astra, (among others) I loved that Mac actually accepted Guy Robert's autograph before he used the ballpoint pen to fix the fuel line.
I also really liked the MacGyverism with the car horn. Definitely doable.

This is the episode RDA sliced the side of his little finger open while playing with his SAK between takes.
The story as told by RDA was that they were filming the scene where MacGyver cuts open the back seat and between takes RDA was stabbing the knife into the seat when the blade folded over and cut his little finger.
You can see the dressing on his his finger in subsequent scenes.

Funny Denizen ,I read your question about asking how many times he cut his hand while using a SAK in the New Zealand Con topic and now I know why it came to your mind He had so many injuries while shooting MacGyver I don't blame him he wants to forget.I would.

Next time I see Richard Hatch (Apollo from the original Battlestar Galactica) who played Michael Talbot, I'll be sure to ask him about his experience on "MacGyver".
"Jeep. My Jeep? What are you talking about? Penny! My Jeep?" - MacGyver

I wish. He makes quite a few appearances at sci-fi conventions throughout the year, so I figure it's just a matter of time before I attend one that he's at.

It showed Mac at his best though. Under pressure, next to nothing to work with, and absolutely polite no matter what. The pen scene really made me smile!

They started using hand doubles back in season 2.
This is funny because I was just thinking how nice his hands always look...soft, well-manicured, and thought that was the one place production slipped up because if Mac was "real" his hands would look the worse for wear given what he puts them through!! Then again, perhaps they shouldn't have let him play with his SAK when he wasn't actually using it!
