Episode 100 - Deep Cover

A manager of a submarine company plans to steal a new sonar detection system developed by the Phoenix Foundation by seducing the designer of the system.

I liked Deep Cover, no doubt about it. I like the story about the ERMA unit being able to detect drug smugglers using submarines. I felt for the character of Gwen who was a widow, a scientist, obviously a hard-working, intelligent, caring woman, who is taken in by this Mitch Landis-what a horrible thing to do to someone. You watch and you just see her getting sucked into his evil scheme. Is she stupid, crazy, naive, or just lonely? I say maybe naive and very lonely. He obviously has no morals, no feelings, just greed pure and simple. I felt that Mac could understand what she was going through: Lisa Kohler, Deborah Either way how would she veer be able to trust another man again?
Best part: Mac's escape from drowning in the submarine.
Speaking about the issue of trust, the end of the episode comes to mind. I have mixed feelings about the fact that Gwen lost her job in the end, but I can see why she couldn't remain. I was just glad that the District Attorney dropped charges against her in the intrests of justice.
I have seem the actor who played Mitch in many other things- quite the character actor. I can't think of his name off of the top of my head.

I haven't seen this episode for quite some time, so I'll have to rewatch it again, but I do remember it had Dexter in it, which is a bit strange because we see Dexter for the first time in the previous episode, so it strikes me as a bit "too much to soon" to have him appear again.

Actually Dexter is, in my opinion, the best part of this ep.

This episode is one of my favorites from season 5! I love the part when Gwen is sitting with the columbian's and Mac comes in with the blow up raft and pulls the string on them, that had to be uncomfortable! Another scene is when he puts the hook through the thug's belt loop and sends him upward, great stuff here.

Anyone else notice Dexter's fly is open when he's sitting down in jail?

The scene where they are at the Dr's house looking for clues.

Pete discovers "love letters".

reminded me of today's versions , emails, facebook etc.

I also liked how they used her phone to make calls

Is this supposed to take place in LA? I'm curious how often it really snows there, especially in that amount.

I do love the Dexter character.

It's LA in "the MacGyver Universe" where apparently it does snow.

Last I heard the lucky people in LA very rarely experience snow, at least like this. I was told that it is a big deal when it does snow there.

yeah but in the LA in the "MacGyver Universe" snow is normal.

I'm gonna watch the episode again and have a closer look. Maybe even take a screencap...


It was a good episode. Man I do love Dexter, RDA plays him so well! He's brilliant. I'd have Dexter come and sit down at my computer anytime he pleased!

Disappointing that Gwen had to ruin it by saying MacGyver, though. You would think she'd be smart enough to figure out what Mac was doing.

Best part of the ep was watching Mac escape from drowning. When that flare gun didn't work the first time I started thinking it was all over...then he gets out and Pete stands over the water and just doesn't seem concerned at all. Like hey, obviously Mac decided to swim some laps!

I really liked this episode, no doubt about it. One of my highlights from Season 5. I like the story about the ERMA unit being able to detect drug smugglers with submarines. Gwen is a very well acted character. It was disappointing that Gwen blew Mac's cover, but you'd think she'd be smart enough to figure out what Mac was doing. I really like Dexter, RDA plays him so well. I like Macs line when he's undercover as Dexter "It's creepy in here, and where are my shoelaces"? And My favorite part of the episode is when Mac is stuck in the submarine and almost drowns. When the flare gun didn't work the first time I was like it's all over... but Mac escapes and Pete stands over the pool and doesn't seem concerned at all. And hey Mac obviously decided to swim some laps. And Mac comes in with the inflatable life raft and pulls the string on them. And when Mac puts the hook through the thugs belt loop and sends him up, up, and away. Overall an "Excellent" episode

I voted good for this one

Here comes Dexter again, less like Leo Getz this time and more like Lewis Tully from Ghostbusters but still doing disgruntled very well! There was no chance he could hide from Gwen though, disguise not withstanding. Definitely real glasses again, not from the props department, so I guess RDA took advantage of the chance to do an episode in sharp focus!

Good escape from the submarine, and nice to see Pete has so much confidence in Mac that he's not even vaguely surprised to see that he's rescued himself again

He normally wore contact lenses. So focus wasn't an issue.

Fair enough. Seems like an odd choice to use prescription lenses for Dexter then - would have been easier just to use plain glass props, surely?

A minor oddity destined never to be explained, I guess

Maybe they filmed all the Dexter scenes in one day so RDA jumped at the chance to not have to wear contacts for the day. *shrugs*

Could be interesting, he had to leave the glasses on the floor when Mac's cover was blown...

When the submarine was drowning where Mac was locked inside, why he opened the oxygen bottle in under water?
... at least we didn't see that he would breath any air from it.

The news paper in Deep Cover has a date of March 9 1990 but the episode aired in February 1990 which makes me wonder if they changed the airing order around after the episodes were filmed... and if they did, what on earth made them decide to use this episode to mark the 100th milestone?!

Things make even less sense when you consider that the date appears to say Monday, March 8 or 9, but the 8th and 9th for March 1990 fell on Thursday and Friday.

I always figured Deep Cover should've switched places with Serenity so that Serenity could be the 100th episode. Maybe this episode was meant to air on March 12 but for some reason got aired earlier. It would make more sense than. I've looked up in my own timeline and I figured it for a March 5th. Maybe I should check it out on the dvd but for the sake of the timeline I kept it on March 5th because it seemed the most plausible explanation. It's a Monday newspaper and obviously between the 1st and the 9th of the month. And I'm pretty sure I had a bigger explanation for it when I wrote it for the timeline. One part of that is that this episode is well more or less set in the future.

Ever thought the newspaper could've been a plant as part of the undercover operation. Maybe they printed one or two editions and made sure the right ones got those newspapers so they might believe it. In case of the jail scene with an inside man from Phoenix to deliver that newspaper to Joe Banniker. He reads it on the exact moment Dexter is being brought in. I think it was created as an what-are-the-odds-meeting. That's what I use as an explanation in the timeline. And considering it was an undercover operation maybe things had to happen fast to get that paper printed on the morning edition and a typo found his way in. Or maybe it was an obvious mistake but nobody noticed?
