I've got a big one, everyone. I've never really been able to tell this to anyone before because I am very new to the fandom. It's really funny now that I think about it, though. When I was in fifth grade, my teacher had a whole science unit where we'd make things called "MacGyverisms". She even made up our science board in the classroom to include MacGyver pictures and pictures of RDA in particular. lol. I really never understood it until I got older the full impact of the show and everything. I have really vague memories of watching the show with my dad when I was little and that's really it. Anyway, we had to make a device in order to protect an egg if it were dropped from a really significant height. (You know, your typical egg-drop mechanism.) We also had to make a container out of as few materials as possible to conceal the ringing of an alarm clock. I have no idea how these would get you out of a life-threatening situation, but, oh well. I regret I didn't appreciate that science unit more than I could have. My only question is, where was the duct tape in all of it?

There actually was such a MacGyver product for educators- the MacGyver science kit- it was designed for grades 7-12 and students would watch clips from MacGyver and then attempt to try out the same experiments MacGyver performed. I would presume took kids through performing (I would think) one of the less potentially dangerous MacGyverisms- and of course they all worked!

Super science with MacGyver

OMG where can I get that?! Not the whole science kit just that picture "super science with MacGyver" blown up to poster size so I could hang it up in my parlor/excersize room! My friends would die and I would even be jealous of myself if I had that in a glossy poster.
And ElleKnight you are so Lucky to have MacGyver used in science class! What a teaching aid that was. We had some creepy dude named "Bill Nye the Science Guy". Needless to say, we all fell asleep. (No offense to anyone who likes Bill Nye the Science Guy.)

When I was growing up, we had both "Bill Nye the Science Guy" and MacGyver. Bill Nye is okay, but MacGyver is much cooler!

We had an invention period too in my science classes in elementary school where we had to develop new ways of performing everyday duties. We also had the bridge contests where you had to design and build the strongest bridge that could sustain weight. The bridge that didn't snap under the weights won a contest. My favorite though was coming up with a new way the eat spaghetti. That was the last part of our invention unit. We had this big dinner at school using our invented utensils. I attached a fork to corkscrew. It wasn't as inventive as it could have been, but it really worked when you turned the cork screw to pick up the spaghetti!

Hey now- Bill Nye is what I grew up with too (in the 8th. grade! on Laser Disc! Yeah buddy! That's some serious technology! )
So yeah- he's cool- but MacGyver's WAY Cooler!!!!

Man I wish my science teacher used MacGyver to teach us...that would have been great. Although last yeah in my chem. class we did watch this great movie on explosives...that was very informative .

I also used to watch Bill Nye all the time on TV when I was younger. I loved him but I have to agree that MacGyver is better

I believe somewhere in the late '80's and early '90's there were schools in the US who actually tought "MacGyverisms", at least that's what I've heard.

I'd love to have a MacGyver science kit. Are they still on sale somewhere??

Why don't they teach a "MacGyverology" class at my school?
Try ebay for the kit maybe...Someone somewhere should be selling one.

I liked Don Herbert AKA Mr. Wizard. I always though Bill Nye was a dork (being polite) who never explained thinks fully.

I also wanted to live next door to both Mack and Don for help with Science projects. Yes I know SAD

My science teacher is a slight MacGyver fan too, no mention of him in class though...

Wow - you guys gave me a great idea to utilize Macgyverisms in everyday life. I am in the planning stages of a boys survival camp this summer. Me, my son and other boys- ages- 17-19 will be doing a 3 day camping trip to sharpen up on basic wilderness survival, from fire making, to makeshift shelters- to finding wild edibles, we will be roughing it for three days. I am thinking about throwing in a Hide and Seek - (Good Guys - Bad Guys) where we will practice camouflage- escape - rescue - and the like. Any suggestions for MacGyver applications here?

Do you mean in relation to the hide and seek? or just the whole thing in general?

I am in beginning planning stage. ...so any or all suggestions for our survival outing are welcomed....it could be search and rescue or escape from mock imprisonment r anything tha Mac might have done to survive or escape
