I didn't say that intelligence of decency made a guy "effeminate." I never considered MacGyver effeminate, for example, and he's intelligent and decent. I just think that Daniel's overall personality, at least in the first few seasons, was effeminate. He had difficulty defending himself in a way that MacGyver never did. Daniel's a sweet guy, but he often came across to me as a "damsel in distress" in the first few seasons.

He never came across as effeminate to me, never. Spader certainally didn't either, in the movie. He - Shanks as Daniel just came across as what he was supposed to be, extremely smart, nerdy, yet decent guy, a regular person, not a "use fists/strength sort of guy". Men who aren't that way don't strike me as effeminate, they pretty much are the ones who will stand by you throughout life, and have a stable career, which looking back on it now at this age, is FAR better than the alure of "bad boys"
I can't picture RDA as Daniel. He's intelligent enough, but the Daniel character always struck me as too sensitive and somewhat...effeminate (no offense to those who like Daniel--I like him okay, but he's pretty wimpy, especially in the first seasons). RDA conveys a rough, rugged masculinity, even in MacGyver, so he was perfectly cast as Jack in Stargate. It never bothered me that "MacGyver" was suddenly carrying a gun--I just accepted that he's an actor with a range of characters in him and that these were two different people. I like variety, from the inventive, more pacific MacGyver to the tough, sarcastic O'Neill. It would bore me to death if he was the same character in everything.

You say you can't picture RDA as Daniel. Did you get to see the episode called " Holiday " ? For a brief moment RDA WAS Daniel and Michael Shanks WAS Jack . It was a very funny moment in a very funny episode of " Stargate SG-1 ". And I guess the actors would have had to study each other behaviour in real life and how they portray the character that they do. For instance, when Jack and Teal'c switched places, then RDA and Christopher Judge would of had to study each other, than they were able to play as the other one so perfectly. Christopher , I found anyway, portrayed Richard very wonderfully funny. The way he raised an eyebrow the way that Richard does, or the way that he moved his body the same as Richard, etc. I would recommend that episode of " Stargate SG-1 " for those who need a little humourous time to relax and enjoy.
Yeah i loved the ending where MS as Jack says to RDA as Daniel "oh Danny boy" while beckoning with his finger for him to come. Holiday is a great episode!!

When the actor himself, refers to the character he plays, in season seven as a "damsel in distress" I think it's okay if a few fans get the feeling he's a little effeminate.
And I used the lesser of the two deprecating phrases. I'm pretty sure the system would block out the other.

I've never heard MS say that. It just utterly amazes me that anyone would think he was "effeminate", not that it's not ok for them to think it. Afterall, he had Shar'e and he was happy to have her, didn't seem like he was lusting after a guy, he was just "shy". But if people see that as effeminate, I guess that could explain why so many women end up with "beaut after beaut."

I don't think intellegence or sensitivity naturally equals whimp or effeminate. I happen to like intellegent and sensitive men myself. Don't find them whimpy at all. I think the character Daniel was written to be the "whimp" for the team dynamic.

Richard Dean Anderson – RDA – plays Jack O’Neill who’s our resident leader who’s the sort of brave stoic soul who likes to kill everybody. Major Carter, who, you know, is sort of the brains of the operation. She’s like the girl next door. Christopher Judge plays Teal’c, who is the stoic alien on the show who wears the STP symbol on his forehead. I play Daniel Jackson who’s kinda the, um, the moral voice but basically he’s a whiny little :censored:. You know, Teal’c is a warrior, Carter’s a warrior, O’Neill’s a warrior, so I think that it’s important that we have somebody like a damsel in distress.

Maybe we're on to something here -- Murdoc was warped from early childhood by a really, really bad first name.
How about 'Abednego'? The worst thing about it is that it actually has been used as a first name!
I once saw a parody list of baby names, with tongue-in-cheek meanings. Here were two of them:
Bartholomew . . . . . He'll hate you. Esmerelda . . . . . . . Wonderful! A baby sister for little Bartholomew.

Abednego is a biblical name. He and Shadrach and Meschach were three men who were put in a fiery furnance for refusing to worship the person or idols of King Nebachadnezzar. But God saved them!! It's in the book of Daniel chapter 3 if you want to read it.
I agree about the name.
Bartholomew was a disciple of Christ.
Esmerelda --the girl from the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
How about a name not from the Bible, or classics of literature?
Angus was great. RDA thought of it--which MacGyver being Scottish works. British--Murdoc is British--English. I'll get back to you.

It was probably Albert or something.
I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver. I'll think I just keep calling him 'Murdoc'.

I just read an interview with Michael Des Barres, in which he talks about playing "Eddie Murdoch" in MacGyver. I had no idea Murdoch even HAD a first name. Does anyone know if the name "Eddie" was ever revealed on the show itself? (sorry if this is old news for you diehard fans! It's new to me.)
I think the general consensus was that Murdocs first name was never used in the show in any way, and it was either made up by MDB, or it might have been included in the characters development synopsis but never actually used in the end product in the same way as the original character synopsis for MacGyver had a first name of Stace which was apparently dropped before the show even went to air.
