RDA has stated on several occasions that he is not computer savvy. Some of the other SG1 cast do go on line (CJ is quite well known to cause havoc among the ranks tongue.gif ). RDA has also stated that some of the fanfic out there really creeps him out ( I am not surprised).
Celebrities have to be really careful when it comes to this online stuff. Nothing wrong with some free publicity, but most of the time they are better off distancing themselves so they cannot really be held responsible for content.

If I were Kate, I'd tell him not to read the forums and be embarrassed if he did. unsure.gif

Hmm... I'd think that as private a person as RDA is, he would probably not be comfortable reading some of the things one can find on a fan messageboard or website. I'm glad that he visits rdanderson.com and leaves the occasional personal message--which I look for constantly and read avidly--and I very much like the fan mail system that is provided.

I know I'm a big geek and all, but its nice to have at least the illusion of contact with someone I admire and respect so much. blush.gif

All you have to do is read through the comments and discussions on Kate's board to see why RDA likes to have plenty of distance between himself and fans.

I think the fact that the Sea Sheppard's organization had to post a statement advising that the fund raising event, at which RDA was appearing, wasn't an RDA convention, in response to the previous appearance he made for them, speaks volumes.

I went on this Kate site last night after Rock recommended it, and I have to admit I was very...........freaked...........out. On so many levels. And a little sad on other levels. I think I am going to stay right here at MOL where the air is more wholesome and less hysterical.

Oh geez, I just put my foot in my mouth! blush.gif I didn't mean that to say "Rock Recommended it" like as in "Check this out- it's GREAT!" I meant he recommended it to me (and rightly so) after Devon the big mouth said something on this thread like "Geez Y'all, do you ever think RDA looks on sites about him?" I was ignorant then, but now I see exactly WHY he would not. Sheesh blush.gif *blushing furiously*

Kate's site is okay, great even, if it weren't for some of those people who explicitly describe what they'd do to RDA if they met him (and how often they'd do it)

Some people on the board only post just to post something, anything. It doesn't matter what. Nor if it makes any sense.
Like "Rick's new note" (which is in full in the updates section), people start copying what Rick said and are then in total awe. Some people just answer to nothing to increase their post number.

I must admit there were times that I followed them (I'm a sheep after all, so I have a good excuse), but then the admiration was taken a little toooo far and I backed off.
That's what I meant with what I've said earlier:
If he did read certain sections, I think he'd reconsider his position.

About the fan fiction, he has no problem with it but he has called slash-fan fiction sick (male/male relationships) other than that he thinks "normal" (without offending anyone here, so I put normal between "") fiction is a good way for fans to express their creativity.

So, Kate's site is OKAY, as long as you stay out of the "Shirtless Rick" thread and those where people only keep copying RD's personal notes (we can read, thank you very much)

Soooo, RD is interested in what people are up to in his name as long as it's sane. He tends to get uncomfortable when people make sassy remarks. Unless you say you're hotter than him because you're wearing wool and he isn't.
(that's me poking fun at myself, just so you know)

I think no one can put that past him. Everyone would feel uncomfortable reading things like "Oh he just has such a great ..." (whatever anatomy part they are talking about).

I don't participate in this kind of discussions either, since I would feel embarrassed myself to write something like that. I use to write online only things I also could say if he stood next to me.

Sheepy you just kind of crystallized some things that I was trying to articulate. I am just very uncomfortable with the whole RDA-as-diety vibe going on. I mean, I love and appreciate RDA as the talented actor who played MacGyver but I think when you take it to that level that maybe some of them are at, I just think some possibly malfunctioning psychological mechanisms come into play.

But who am I to judge, we all have our own quirks and obsessions sometimes. They're enjoying themselves, so to each his own...

Do you know what I would do if I met RDA? I would be like so calm and chill about it, and I would just be like, "Hey Rick, wanna grab a beer?"

Oh who am I kidding, I would so totally faint!

The man is charming, I have to be totally honest and yes he is still goodlooking for a man his age and yes, I am guilty of taking a pic of his fanny (well he bent over and I had my camera at the ready, I'm a sheep with needs to, you know)

But I'd feel very very embarassed if I'd ever say out loud, well you know...
There has been a time I was head over heels with this man, but it has passed. Still he's darn handsome, but I just don't fancy him in that particular way -anymore-.
He's still my hero and the cutest hero I've ever seen.

Btw, pic turned out crappy, so it was a bad shot anyway. LOL

I hope he reads some 'good and decent' fanfics every now and then. He's right you know. Fiction is good to express creativity.

Let's just treat him with respect and as a human being.
He's great, we all know that.

There are folks of all shapes, sizes, ages and genders on Kate's forum - some more expressive of their point of view than others. However... if they misbehave she will swiftly delete the entry and if they continue after she warns them, they are kicked off permanently. She has said that some join just to post garbage and she screens, then trashes entries like that several times a week.

Rocky does the same thing... right? dry.gif jeep.gif

The way things are here, should stay that way. Rock just cleans the place up once in a while. I know that after the hacking he deleted the accounts of the members that just makes accounts but don't appear on the forums at all.

Yes he is, in one of the first posts he said that he is not as crazy about RDA like we are but it may be that he doesn't understand since he is from the other gender.

de.e already seems to know him for quite a few years personally from playing paintball.

Well, we're actually not here to discuss other forums, but I think I want to say something that applies to every online community: If somebody is new he should not post right away. He should read a lot and get a feeling how people treat each other first. That's what I did when I was new to the internet anyway.

I certainly never would have dared to address the long year members as if we were close friends or as if I was one of them. It took two years to become real comfortable and feeling like a family member myself.

It is very hard since when only reading we don't hear the words as they were intended and they may be understood complete differently.

So everyone should make sure that the things he writes are understandable for everyone and don't hurt anyone and if someone wants to write something sarcastic he should make sure that the others are not offended by it but take it for the joke it is (and, to say something about MOL specifically, I like the bantering around here.)

So yes, his first posts were very rude and assaulting but I think he found his steps now.

And I also have to say that there was one girl that joined our German forum and made all the mistakes above and everybody thought: Huh? and didn't want to get to know her better at first.

But once I met her face to face I understood her better and now understand some of the things she is trying to say but come out in a wrong way sometimes. She's one of my best friends now. Go figure!

So I'm trying not to be biased about anyone that is new and I also hope that nobody is biased about me when I'm a newby somewhere. We just should get to know each other and are curious about the other and welcome them friendly and who knows what great people you will meet!

All over the world.

That's the problem of the digital era.

One of my best friends and I broke off our friendship because of it.
She has the tendency to call off appointments the very last second and she always blew me off by text messages, email or msn.
We had had a fight about it before. It's soo much more personal to pick up the phone for 2 minutes and explain. But she didn't.
After that we made up again and she told me I was right. Next time she would call me or meet up and then blow me off biggrin.gif

Only a month later we had agreed on celebrating New Year's Eve together, with a nice bottle of Rosé wine, some cheese etc etc.

December 30th she sent me an email and told me she'd rather visit her family. That part made complete sense, so I wasn't upset about that. But again she lte me down only one night beforehand and she did it via email. Stubborn as I am, I refused to pick up the phone also and sent her an email back to tell her I was disappointed. She got extremely mad at me and broke off our friendship. She thought I was mad at her that she wanted to see her dying aunt, but I wasn't. I was pretty p*ssed off by the way she told me.
But it's too late now, friendship is over and it might not be as one of us had grabbed the telephone.

mad.gif Grrr!

LOL you reminded me of an incident with a boss I had.

Although it's not digital related. Unless phones qualify.

He had an annoying habit of ... just hanging up. No pretense... no goodbye... just click.

So one day I called him back and said "You just hung up on me."

"No I didn't. Our conversation was over."

"And you can't say goodbye?"

"It takes too much time."

huh.gif

"You can waste the time for a common courtesy with me."

~silence~

"Our conversation is over. Now say goodbye."

"Goodbye." *click*

biggrin.gif

I guess it doesn't have anything to do with the technology, but the lack of common courtesy that's on the rise.

Sometimes the uncontrollable urge to mess with people outweighs the millstone of humility.

In television shows it happens a lot that a phonecall is ended just by hangingup. I thought it might be something in the US culture. I am so happy to hear it is not!!

Unfortunately I think it is... sad.gif But not for everyone thank goodness.

I don't even mind if someone says "Later!", or "See ya!", and then hangs up. It's just the total hang up that is infuriating. I have a particular associate that every phone call I would end with "OK I'll let you go now, good to talk with you!" And I would hear a dial tone in my ear! I had to check her on it and it doesn't happen anymore thankfully.

I just think it's just a whole culture of rudeness....it's more than phone calls.
