I was just looking at a book which was for sale out front of my local book and stationary supplier uptown.
Naturally I dived straight for the Victorinox section of the book.
It had an interesting little piece about the companies history, which I've just noticed is also in
Wikipedia entry for Victorinox too.
Anyway apparently when the mother of founder Karl Elsener died, he changed the companies name to "Victoria" in her honor. then a few years later he added part of the french term for stainless steel (which is acier inoxydable) to the name.
So "Victoria"+"Inox" became Victorinox.
Another interesting tidbit which isn't in Wikipedia, was that the SAK was never actually contractually brought by the Swiss army. Apparently the knife didn't impress the "top brass". But in spite of this many of the solders purchased the knives with their own money and thus grew the name Swiss Army knife.
And NASA now use the Victorinox Master Craftsman SAK as standard equipment aboard the space shuttles..
