Admin update:Click here to read and comment on the new movie news

My brother (another avid MacGyver Fan) said that a new MacGyver movie is in the works. Now i tried googling it with no luck but i did find this.

http://www.themediadrome.com/cgi-bin/newsp...030410659,92949,

Can anyone confirm this? I'm guessing he was miss informed because i believe it was Young MacGyver and not a movie.

Its old news and no longer valid

that article is dated 2002.

There's been no further discussion of such a movie.

Paramount couldn't even be bothered to give us a decent "re-mastered" set of DVDs. mad.gif

At one time- around 2002-2003, there were talks of a new TV show to be called "Young MacGyver", where the non-existent nephew of MacGyver (named "Clay MacGyver") takes a position at The Phoenix Foundation, following in his footsteps. A pilot episode was made, but never aired and WB did not pick up the series.
There was also talks of possibly making a feature length MacGyver movie, but that never happened either. I'd still love to see one happen, if it starred Richard Dean Anderson as MacGyver. I fear a MacGyver movie today might go the route of parody-homage movies like "The Brady Bunch" movies, the "Charlie's Angels" movies, the "Starsky & Hutch" movie, "The Dukes of Hazzard" movie and I'm sure there's other examples where the movie wound up just being a big parody of the TV show and mocking it more so than keeping any real continuity with the show.
I'd hate to see that done to MacGyver. I'd rather see something like the Star Trek movies and Serenity, some of the few movies where the cast of the show and the integrity of the show was actually maintained for the movies.
Maybe after seeing an older Slyvester Stallone reprise his role as "Rocky Balboa"- and his "John J. Rambo" role in the upcoming "Rambo IV" movie- and Harrison Ford returning once more as Indiana Jones in the May 22, 2008 "Indiana Jones IV" movie!!!!! (can't wait to see this one!) - perhaps movie makers will realize that if they can do it, Richard Dean Anderson can still do it too- and perhaps he could be persuaded to come back one more time as MacGyver!
One thing I've found to be true about Hollywood- Never say never (again! wink.gif )

Yeah I think thats the big problem there.

They would have to get RDA on board, even though he's pretty much indicated that he's done with MacGyver.

And the interview he did for the Mastercard commercial he talked about it having the right level of humor... that kinda says to me that a parody might be the only kind of MacGyver film he would be interested in doing. sad.gif

Like I always said: sarcastic one liners would be great for it but it doesn't have to become like slapstick. Action/adventure and hard humor that would be ok. But fooling around in the MacGyverisms or situations, no way.
Like for example: MacGyver and Murdoc are fighting as they were doing in The Widowmaker and Murdoc would say: 'Say goodbye, MacGyver!' and Murdoc ends up dead that MacGyver would say: 'Goodbye, Murdoc!'

For me a MacGyver wouldn't be MacGyver without RDA.

I like sarcasm in shows, still a sarcastic Mac wouldn't be the same to me...

I thought it was old news. Yeah i dont think a MacGyver movie without RDA would be the same and from all the interviews i've watched, RDA seems like he was finished with MacGyver ages ago.

I would love a new Movie or Spin off but to be honest MacGyver needs to be left alone and never be remade. A remake will just destroy its image and cult status.

MacGyver shall live in our hearts!

I would recoil in horror if they ever tried to "modernize" MacGyver or make a movie of it, especially if the star who made him the legend that he is would be absent from the production. It would be an enormous failure and disappointment to me if they did that. Yes, it would ruin the MacGyver image we all grew up with and came to love. They didn't do Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford, and they didn't do the whole Back to the Future series without Michael J. Fox because those actors established those characters, and we loved them as they were. If they had tried to replace those actors with someone else, I guarantee you the rest of those series would flop. We become used to certain actors in certain roles, and to change that is to destroy the franchise. I'm happy with the shows as they are--they're classics and they bring back fond memories. I don't need a movie with some pathetic MacGyver wannabe in it.

I also think it would ruin the MacGyver name for any future generations who might not have seen the original series before seeing the movie. If they screw it up (and there's a high probability of that), then kids might think MacGyver is something that he's really not. For instance, I could see some idiot making the movie and altering it so that guns don't bother MacGyver, or something completely out of character like that. Dumb Hollywood. Don't even get me started. They've ruined enough movies for me. ranting2.gif

That's a bad example.

I agree more on the Indiana Jones example, just like Stallone did for Rocky and Rambo. I think it's interesting to "visit" a character after an amount of time. Just to see how much older they became. I hope many peoples follow Stallone's example, because with Rocky Balboa he has proven it. 'It's not because peoples say that you're finished that you ARE finished."

We've talked about possible actors for the role of MacGyver right before the crash. Rock came up with a picture of Kevin Bacon where he almost looks exactly like RDA. Kevin Bacon would be a good choice. No other actor can ever play MacGyver better than RDA. But I think there are some who can try to live up to the expectation. Than I mainly think of Kevin Bacon, Sean Bean and Josh Holloway (yep Sawyer of Lost, just those angry looks would do enough for me, except he'd be a younger MacGyver) and I also think Sean Bean would be a great choice, if you've seen National Treasure, you'll know why. The smile, he had the mullet and besides I think he has the perfect age to continue the actual timeline from the series. He's like in his early 40's. He was just the villain in National Treasure.

That's an extreme example, MacChick. They got to be really dumb to let that happen but if Henry Winkler and John Rich would've a say, I think they won't let it happen.
Besides I think they're smart enough to make a movie on the National Treasure's level or Back to the Future's level. Not a treasure hunting thing but an adventure/action on that level.

Hmm...I can maybe see Kevin Bacon- but what's his Kevin Bacon number to MacGyver? biggrin.gif
(I'm sure we've probably done this one- but let's see if I can think of something real quick...)

Kevin Bacon starred with John Lithgow in "Footloose" (awesome movie with great music!)
John Lithgow starred in the 1987 "Harry and the Hendersons" movie (recently rereleased on DVD!) with Melinda Dillon.
Melinda Dillon guest starred on an episode of "CHiPs" (1st. season coming to DVD on June 5! Awesome!)
And Larry Wilcox starred as Officer Jon Baker on "CHiPs" and also guest starred on the "Gunz 'N' Boyz" episode of MacGyver!

Hmm- so I guess that's a 4. Not too bad- there might be a quicker route somewhere...

Sean Bean was great as the villian in "National Treasure" (I love that movie- can't wait for the sequel at the end of the year! smile.gif )
And let's not forget Sean's other great role as Boromir in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy! (AWESOME!)

By the way, Sean Bean's 47 about to turn 48 this year- so he'd be about the right age, I guess.

....And if it has the name "MacGyver" on it, I imagine I'd wind up watching it out of loyalty and curiousity's sake- but it's really not gonna be the same without Richard Dean Anderson as MacGyver in it! Even some of my friends who are just casual fans of the show agree on that!

..........................
What is the right age range for MacGyver though? Are we talking about if they wanted a young actor somewhere in his 20s to do the role?
Or if they tried to keep the storyline where it left off- with MacGyver somewhere in his late 40s (or 50s if you set it in present times...)?
And assuming the timeline with the show was being kept, wouldn't they want to get RDA to do it if at all possible?
Or are Kevin Bacon, Sean Bean and Josh Holloway alternate 40ish year olds replacements for RDA if he didn't want to do it?
If that's the case, I think I heard Dennis Quaid mentioned before- I like him in some movies- he could do well maybe...

I suppose someone like Tom Welling or Dalton James even would be too old for the 20ish crowd and not old enough for the 40ish role?

Oh well- Richard Dean Anderson still is and will always be MacGyver! Nothing can beat that.

Those would be the actors I would option. Kevin Bacon the least, Sean Bean would be really great and for his late forties he looks good, Bacon also by the way. I think he would be the best choice for continuity of the time line and I think Josh Holloway too but for a younger Mac.

It's just too sad that Rick has a daughter. If he had a son that maybe would look like him then we only had to wait twenty years and then...
