OMG, does this bring back memories. My current GSD is quite content to stay in the yard and never roams away, but my prior GSD, had wanderlust from day 1. At 3 months old, in the middle of February with snow everywhere, at 9PM, she escaped under the gate and was found half an hour later meandering down a very busy street 4 blocks away. She went under the gate, learned to play with it enough to open it, and over the gate, then we got a 30 foot chain. On the 25th anniversary of Elvis' death, I let her out for 5 minutes, so I could watch the special in peace, and when I went to get her, gone she was - and she was almost 9 by then, I thought it was safe. 2 hours later, after being up and down streets screaming her name, i spotted her a block away heading for home. I pulled the car over, called her and she bolted for the front porch, when I got there, she had this look like "I'm here, what took you so long?"
