When the man wakes up he's never quite sure if he is the man, or just a butterfly dreaming that it is a man.

Hmmm. Interesting. Boggles the mind it does...

This is the version of that story I originally learned. I especially like the tag line:

"A Chinese man of the T'ang Dynasty -- and, by which definition, a philosopher -- once dreamed he was a butterfly. Thereafter he was never quite certain whether he was a man dreaming he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming it was a man.

that quotes from a movie I saw years ago about a group of teens who are taken up to an old house where they spend the week-end doing dream experiments.

I can't remember much else, but I think it was actually a horror movie.

I'm pretty sure the title had the word sleep in it...Anyone know what it's called?

The version I quoted was the one Tom Stoppard used in the play "Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead", a good many years before Rocky's movie used it. The sardonic tag line was Stoppard's own touch.

Neither version is better, Rocky -- they're different. And to you too.

Rocky, I remember a movie from that timeframe with a similar plot. I think it was called Sleepers and it was a group of medical students that "killed" then revived each other so that they could experience the threshold between life and death. The movie was centered around the near death experiences and the dream like state that they induced. It was more of a psychological thriller, but kind of creepy.

My mate is bugging me to watch that movie, I might over the weekend.

OK I found it.

The movie's called Nightwish from 1989, but it didn't get to NZ until 1990 or 91 and went straight to video.

Yeah, Flatliners was what I was thinking of. I'm terrible at remembering the names of shows...........believe it or not, I have trouble recalling the names of MacGyver episodes, but I can remember the plots almost photographically.

I think he's referring to the tag line for the film 'Nightwish'...

For 'Aliens', it was "In Space... no one can hear you scream."

That tag line gets stolen a lot, but usually as an obvious satire. The Nightwish poster seems to have ripped off the line with no comic intent at all.

It probably ripped off more than the tagline..........

Does it have chest busters too?

I find myself wondering if the chest buster is a distant cousin to the bodice-ripper . . .

I wonder if the Mythbusters would be interested in chest busters...

Seriously, though...when I watched the Alien series with my brother (he's a huge sci-fi fan where I am not, except for Stargate SG-1), I wondered if they got the idea for the Goa'uld and symbiotes from these movies. If you think about it, the symbiote bursts out of a Jaffa's stomach instead of a chest, but they're similar in some ways.

So...a symbiote is a gut buster? Okay, I'll stop now...
