Why is George Washington's official birthday celebration held on February 22 when he was actually born on February 11? (kind of cool... I didn't know this one)

George Washington was born 11 February 1732 under the Julian calendar. In 1752, the British Empire (which the U.S. was once a part) switched over to the Gregorian calendar, which required the dates to shift 11 days forward.

Thus under the calendar we use today, Washington's birthday is 22 February.

Well done. 97% of Harvard graduates can not figure this riddle out, but 84% of kindergarten students were able to figure this out in 6 minutes or less.
