I never had one lesson of Latin. huh.gif

Me neither. Eastern Germans had to learn Russian instead.

Personally, I think that Russian would be more useful today. biggrin.gif

Then again, Latin was fun (sort of) because it's the root of so many languages today and made me realise just how interconnected are some of the European languages. For example, it taught me that for some words English, German, and Spanish have followed one linguistic path and French and Italian followed another, hence why you get cheese/kaise/queso vs fromage/formaggio.

I also found it really cool to read Julius Caesar in his own language.

As a matter of fact, the Maastricht dialect has some Latin influences. As well as a lot of French (words such as fourchette, gemin, sjevraoij -a combination of chaud et froid- etc etc)

The name Maastricht comes from Trajectum ad Mosam.

A lot of buildings still have Latin names. Those I understand because I grew up with it. But what Loth wrote didn't ring any bells huh.gif

That might be the case, but since I had no practise for over 18 years I forgot most of it sad.gif

You can't imagine what a 180 degree turn it was after 1989. People couldn't get rid fast enough of everything that somehow reminded of the past. They threw everything away and bought new things, streets and places were renamed, nobody wanted to hear songs and see movies of our own artists anymore...

Took some time for people to realize that not everything had been bad.

Exactly. When watching "Who wants to be a millionaire" there often are questions about the origin of words and I never can even guess what it could be since I don't have any knowledge in Latin. Sometimes I miss it though everyone keeps saying that I should be glad I didn't had to learn it laugh.gif

A trio of sightless rodents...
A trio of sightless rodents...
Observe how they scamper about
Observe how they scamper about
En masse they pursued the agriculturalist's espoused maid
Who severed their lower posterior extremities with a carving blade
To see such a bizzare occurrence I would have happily paid
That trio of sightless rodents!

Nursery rhymes are pretty evil aren’t they? It’s a wonder we all turned out so norm… wait…never mind rolleyes.gif .

That rhyme has origins from Queen Mary I who burnt 3 noblemen at the stake (dunno why they are blind in the rhyme. unsure.gif ). And you really don’t want to know the story behind Mary Mary quite contrary!

Just teasing. I've seen your portraits of Lucky and they are excellent! If I had a pet you could draw for me I'd hire you. happy.gif

As for the cost of your pencils, if you can't get them in the UK or from somewhere that’s not charging $40 to send some pencils, factor it in to your charges for the portraits and you'll recover your cost in no time.

hmm.bmp might buy myself a pet, just so you can draw me a portrait. laugh.gif
