I just found this comment from Tom Selleck about the upcoming Magnum PI movie, in this weeks local TV guide magazine.
I couldn't help agreeing with him and thinking the same thing relates to any attempt at a MacGyver movie.
QUOTE (Tom Selleck on Magnum PI movie)
What worries me is thay take these TV show titles, and they buy them and they spend $100 million on special effects, and then they make fun of them and trivialise it.

What can I say? He's right.
And they should ask him and the others instead. I mean who are the makers to decide if an actor's too old or not. Age is only in the mind. If they're still up to it than why not. Maybe they can't run anymore like Daniel Craig in Casino Royale but that's not really necessary. A car chase is more something for Magnum in his red ferrari. A gunfight on one place without too much running and a fightscene here and there. And you've got your movie.
They should handle things like Bryan Singer did for Superman Returns. He said the most important thing was to have a lot of respect for the things your fan of. And the movie is the proof that he did. He said he was so stunned with the opening credits of the orginal film of 1978, that he decided to keep it. He even gave a cameo role to the woman who played Lois Lane in the 1948 film.
I hope they ever grow up there in Hollywood. But they're also waiting too long with their films of series. Instead of made for tv movies they should've immediately made those big budget films after the series ending.
I can only think of one series that was smart enough to make a film during the series run and that were the Power Rangers. I think between season 2 and 3 they made their film. Because in the third season they sort of remade the movie in a four-parted adventure called the Ninja Quest.
There just is no respect for the elders. Stallone has already proven that even after thirty years a character can come back and have a solid come back. And I'm sure Indiana Jones is going to do the same thing. Instead of modernizing everything, they should keep the good old fashion ways they're usually the best.

I totally agree. I'm sooooo tired of films with billions of special effects. There is usually no story, no plot or actors - who actually act!. Those are not films... they're movies.
That which has been established will endure even with time and at a distance.
I can't tell you anything about what happens after the cameras go off, mostly because I'm usually unconscious by then.

Yup, they definitely screw it up. I TRIED to watch the Dukes of Hazzard movie and it was terrible. I made it through 20 minutes. NOTHING like the original series. I'd LOVE to have a MacGyver movie, but I KNOW that Hollywood woudl SCREW it UP!!!

Yeah, this is probably why it's just as well that a MacGyver movie might never get it made- if it ever is made, I want to see RDA reprise his role one more time in a serious movie. If that's not gonna happen, then I'd prefer they forget the whole thing and just remember MacGyver in reruns on TV. At least we got two TV-movies out of Mac, which is way more than some shows ever get.
And though tongue-in-cheek, the 2006 SuperBowl commercial was also a very nice and welcome MacGyver comeback of sorts. That may be about the best we can do.
I definitely have to agree with Tom Selleck on the Magnum, P.I. movie. Good call! There have been very few movies based on TV shows that have truly kept true to the series- and fewer still that have actually used the original actors/actresses in their original roles. The Star Trek movies are probably about the only ones I can think of really. And there are some movies based on TV shows that aren't really terrible- I particuarly enjoyed "The Little Rascals" and "Leave it to Beaver" movies. But for those few movies, you have tons of others like "Charlie's Angels" (1 and 2), "The Mod Squad" (a not very well received 1999 movie version), "The Dukes of Hazzard", "Starsky & Hutch", "The Brady Bunch Movie" (and its theatrical sequel and later made-for-TV movie) and probably others I've forgotten (with good reason!)
There are some halfway good ones I think- I don't think "The Avengers" movie was that bad- but then I haven't seen that much of the actual Avengers show, so I probably couldn't really tell what it should be. I do like the "Mission: Impossible" movies, although they definitely went off the track of the TV show. The original actors were actually offered roles in the first one- however, when they found out their characters were going to all be killed off and Jim Phelps would turn out to be a traitor after 40 something years of service, they wisely passed on it and let their characters be remembered in reruns.
I hope this "Magnum, P.I." movie will not be as bad as Tom Selleck fears, but I totally agree with his stance. I'd still love to see RDA in a MacGyver movie, but if it's going to be a farce- then it's just as well that it doesn't look like it'll happen...

But it could always be soo much better.

I'm unfamiliar with the series but that first film of De Palma was really top class. What a great scenario, was that. But they were also lucky to have good actors like Tom Cruise, Jon Voight and Jean Reno.
What do you guys think of Miami Vice? I'm also unfamiliar with that series but the movie sure impressed me. OK, more action was maybe better, but Colin Farell's and Jamie Foxx's acting really impressed me. It really kept the film up.

I once read George Clooney could become Magnum. However, Clooney with a moustache? They still could do it would the four of them, because they're still all of them alive. OK, Higgins is probably in his late seventies by now but still, I wish to hear one of his stories again. And TC and Rick are probably also nearing the 60. But coming on, they could still do it and if they still have the ferrari and Robin's Nest, it should be no problem. (But there always are) And if they do with Tom Selleck I hope they're polite enough to let him do the narrating.

Perhaps you mis-understood.
Tom has said is wont appear in the movie.
But with narrating you don't have to be IN the movie, you're just a background voice. A sound effect.

From the excerpts I've seen of the movie it looks nothing like the TV show. But I could be wrong.
Like I said, I never saw the show. But I'm going to change that. Heck, Miami, a colorful state, white sandy beaches, blue ocean..., and set in the 80's.

They could have given the characters any names and called the movie anything.
Actually, I might have liked it better if they had.

Oh yeah, 'bout forgot about "Miami Vice". All I can about that is (and I must point out that I have only seen bits of the show in passing- this is one I definitely was not allowed to watch growing up in the 80s- probably something to do with all the foul language, drugs and violence (you think? ) So I'm not into Miami Vice and didn't bother to see the movie.
But the one good thing about the movie is that Michael Mann was the director- and he's also the creator of the TV show. So you'd think he'd ensure that the vision of his original series was still intact in the movie. It's definitely a serious movie- hard to make a farce out of two detectives that are busting drug runners and pimps and whatever else- and STILL look good with the latest fashions!
Anyway, I have to say that theme song ROCKS!!! (Jan Hammer actually had a hit on the Billboard charts with it, I do believe.)
Yep, the extended Miami Vice theme made it onto the charts in many countries.
Jan Hammer did a awesome job of all the music he did for that show.
The TV show didn't have any really bad language (it was prime time 80's after all). I use to love the show. I recently hired the season on DVD.. and...um.... yeah.. it hasn't aged very well at all.
But from what I've seen of the movie, it didn't seem to have the style factor of the TV show.. no pastel clothing, silk suits etc

Guess I really have to check it out. But I once read they said it was in Bad Boys style. And so it was.

Yep, yep.
Now when going through a few stores yesterday, I noticed there's a game of Miami Vice and pretty cheap too. Someone know something about that?

It wouldn't surprise me in least if there is no narrating at all in the Magnum P.I. movie. Anyone know when it will be coming out in the US?
No, now with this it seems to have a more solid form but like with all the other we'll just have to keep the guessing.

By the way, the same company that did the TV-show based Miami Vice game, Davilex, also did a Knight Rider PC game a few years ago that is really cool! (Except for a British guy trying to pull off Michael Knight's American accent!) But it's a British company, so what do you expect?
Yep that's the one. When I had the box in my hand, it looked quite cool and well done. It was actually the price that was worrying me only €3.90. But it's from 2004 already, I see. Opinions are always mixed. I've got Die Hard Nakatomi Plaza, it also didn't had too good reviews but it was a nice game.
