Why doesn't Jack step back through the wormhole to another planet?

Or Maybe Mac does, since he's keen on keeping the peace? huh.gif

He can't, if you go back through an incoming wormhole you die. You have to dial again first.

But Jack is smart. He might not be an physicist, but you don't gain rank by being a dummy, especially in the Air Force. He received a Bachelor's degree in the Air Force Academy. And he's a nearly 30 year veteran of several wars, from Vietnam up to and including the SGC. He has to attend training classes often, and received a Masters degree while he was a Captain. And no, that's not fanwank, that's the history that the writers gave O'Neill. And even though he may act stupid, that doesn't mean he is. It's a tactical diversion set to have the enemy underestimate him. Now mind you, I voted for MacGyver. He's got the getter advantage.

The set staged by Rocky puts MacGyver in his element. A junkyard... like candy to a baby. Jack in coming out of the wormhole in the open, albeit armed but vulnerable tacitly. Even if Jack got an shot in first (and I stick with my no threat scenario...) Rocky also put Mac already ducking away into the bowels of the junkyard.

I just can't come with the next scene. But if I were to jump ahead, I would have Jack wound Mac, possibly in the leg and capture him, take his SAK away and use the duct tape to bind his hands. But, not enough to bind his feet, leaving Mac to utilize whatever is surrounding him...

Next...

Jack would probably zat Mac and clear things up later at the SGC. After Dr. Frasier found out the Jack and Mac both have the Ancient gene and in fact do have 99.9% of exactly the same gene code they would probably ask Mac to join in SG1 to "offset Teal'c's and O'Neill's overwhelming coolness" with Mac's inventive and pacific approach to alien scenarios.

Can you really picture Mac doing his things in an alien planet!?

In the SG-1 episode Ascension, doesn't Teal'c say something like:

"... I have heard of a sport where women do battle in a ring of Jello..."

Send them both there to settle their differences. If they don't end up dying of laughter, something is very wrong with both of them.

No, not really. That's why I like the idea of training simulation. No harm, no foul... everybody goes out for beer and fruit juice when they finished playing. Except it's awfully expensive way to do that. Turning on the Stargate and all that.

Hmmm... What to do now? hmm.bmp headbutt.gif

Nutsy, that's exactly how I've presented Jack and Mac in several of my crossover fics--they're related, they have the Ancient gene, and they've traveled through the stargate together. MacGyver still gets to use creative solutions on these other planets, but let's just say that his approach has to be slightly..."different." wink.gif

Maybe they would be better suited to playing a few rounds of "The Jackal and The Hound" - an ancient Egyptian game of strategy - I think the game has parameters similar to chess.

Since he is a military man, Jack - given his experience at "desert warfare, modern and ancient" - probably would know more about strategy and finesse in actual attack and defense. But Mac would surely appreciate the game from an archeological standpoint - the playing pieces: just think who might have touched them, their history and the game's original inception. Brilliant minds pondering a puzzle - or game - from opposite sides of the same coin. Mac/Jack=RDA.

MacGyver! MacGyver! MacGyver! MacGyver!

It comes down to a close draw - but Mac is more used to being alone in tricky situations and being able to outwit his oponent at a moment's notice.

Jack has the great ability to be sneaky and get himself out of a jam - but his first response usually seems to be to reach for the guns or turn to his companians for assistance (companians not viable in this sceanrio).

Even though I said that Jack easily reaches for his guns - I definitely do not believe that he's the type to shoot first - ask questions later, especially with an unarmed opponent.

Conclusion: Mac is able to outwit Jack's sneakiness - and once more win the day!

Dreams are important, otherwise sleep is just eight hours of nothing.

I call it an obstacle course. Some of the others call it MacGyverland.

Must have duct tape ... Lots of duct tape.

...an alternate universe? AU's are a great way to explain the unexplainable. Maybe on that Earth, the Stargate is hunk of junk, and Mac is Jack in another reality. Which would really suck, because Jack would essentially be shooting at himself. huh.gif

A few thoughts, going back to the initial scenario . . .
QUOTE
As he gets out of his jeep

Okay, Mac's right next to something he can duck behind -- and Jack announced his intention. (Always the mark of the eventual loser.) So we're already past the really basic "Shoot first" situation.

Even without the follow-up snippet, I'll bet my marbles (the few I still have, anyway) on Mac's reflexes (and luck) getting him out of the immediate line of fire; I'll put a double on Mac finding more to use in a wrecking yard (with added bonus workshop) than Jack, and a redouble on him being more likely to prevail in the long run. He won't kill Jack in any case; although based on Mac's track record, Jack could trip and shoot himself with his own gun. (Ever notice how many times they got rid of a bad guy that way?)

Once past the initial face-off, we're not just dealing with brains vs. brawn; it's also a test between street-smarts, and military training and experience. In this set-up, I'll give Mac the edge there as well -- especially since Jack, who typically works as part of a team, is alone. Mac's on home ground; all he has to do to win is survive.

Things we don't know: Is this really O'Neill, or yet another inexpensive low-carb substitute? Does he actually intend to kill Mac, and if not, what's he up to? It's a good point that he arrived with an unloaded gun; does he have a plan, and if so, what? Has Mac met Jack before? Has he seen a Stargate before?

Other unknowns: are they actually evenly matched physically? If Jack is, in fact, ten or fifteen years older, Mac’s reflexes get an extra leg up. If O'Neill is not actually the Real O'Neill, then the question of relative abilities gets muddy -- most clones etc. seem to have pretty shoddy quality control.

As a prospective story outline, I'd go for Mac ducking the first shot (if there is one), luring O'Neill away from the Stargate, and then diving into it himself to get away. If this is a universe where he's never seen a Stargate (the scenario didn't establish that), he'll need a little extra time to figure out the controls. Unless . . .

QUOTE
"This universe ain't big enough for the both of us." yells O'Neill.

"Then leave." answers MacGyver.

"You first." replies O'Neill as he loads his gun.

Or is this a set-up for Jack forcing Mac through the gate? My, this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Or not.

[No wilderness] is so dangerous as a city home "with all the modern improvements".
One should go to the woods for safety, if for nothing else.

#1 Jack O'Neill and MacGyver would first have to come to grips with the sight of each other (like the two Jacks in Double Jeopardy) surprise.gif

#2 Then Jack would mention something about Mac's hair (the mullet) and how it reminded him of the 80's. roller.gif

#3 MacGyver would spout some anti-violence jargon, a little nervous at the sight of the BFG in Jack's hand (you figure out what BFG stands for and go watch an episode of Stargate SG1 called Allegiance in the 6th season). unsure.gif

#4 Then the rest of SG1 would show up. Mac would check out Samantha Carter, and she would check out Mac (he's like Daniel Jackson, but looks exactly like Jack) w00t.gif

#5 Jack would notice this interaction, and try to resist kicking Mac's butt. Being a military Colonel, he has some self control. whistle.gif

#6 Being red blooded American men they would talk, exchange classified information, and become friends. There would be no need to fight. Unless Mac got possessed by a Goauld? OOOOO. So many possibilities. nasty.gif

Translated--without profanity, which is vulgar and unecessary, it's a military term meaning BIG FREAKING GUN (I know the military uses the other F word, but I don't--watch the episode--Jack gets it out and yells for everyone to get down--they see this thing and hit the deck!! Whoa!)
