And then there is Murphy's Law, what ever can go wrong, will.
Murphy's correlary, whatever can go wrong, will, when the boss is watching.
And Mrs. Murphy's law, whatever can go wrong, will, when Mr. Murphy is out of town.

My father was a physicist. (Really.) His main contribution to published science involved measurement of captured neutron cross-sections . . . try explaining that to your daughter when she asks what daddy does.
Of far more importance to the practical mind was his thoroughly tested set of laws involving what, in our family, was known as HSS or "Horizontal Surface Syndrome", as follows:
1. The depth to which a horizontal surface is buried in stuff is directly proportional to the value of the same surface as a clear workspace.
2. The breakability of the objects burying the surface is directly proportional to the instability of the structure. The distance to the floor, and its hardness, are also complicating factors. We often suspected a causal relationship (adding a fragile object, or removing a rug, actually caused a structure to destabilise), but numerous experiments proved inconclusive, probably due to confounded variables.
3. The most important item in any given stack is at the least accessible level. (This is not the same as it being on the bottom.)
4. No action is required to cause stuff to accrue on horizontal surfaces; if the surface would be valuable as a clear space, the stuff will simply collect, like dust clumping in a vacuum.
5. We could pile stuff on the ceiling if we could just keep it from slipping off. The ceiling IS horizontal, after all!
Confound those variables, anyway.
'Beth
