Anyone ever notice how much MacGyver slept on his couch? I went to bed lastnight on my couch instead of my bed, and I thought about how in almost every scene where he is going to sleep he goes to bed on his couch. I'm sure there were some filming reasons behind it, but they might have wanted to do this to show his personality. Just something I thought about while laying down lastnight.

Yeah, that was strange. It wasn't like Mulder from the X-Files whose room was once shown to be entirely packed with storage as an explanation for his couch dwelling. Mac had a bed everywhere he lived, so it's bizarre he wouldn't sleep someplace comfortable.

I remember that when he lived on the loft above the hardware store he actually did sleep on his bed. He slept on his couch during most of his time when he was living in the houseboat except for 'MacGyver's Women' when his living room was occupied by the 3 ladies.

Sleeping on the couch was much better from the point of view of blocking and camera angles. It also put him in the same room as the telephone and the door, so he could be interrupted by the appropriate plot device without having to run down the stairs.
And it's a nice, informal thing to do, which suited his personality.

To me it almost feels more comfortable to sleep on the couch then be in a queen sized bed by myself. Plus it's just different. It was his personality to just crash at the closest place.

Ladies??
Murphy, Jenny & Maria were discussing men's reluctant towards commitment in Mac's living room in 'MacGyver's Women', so he had to go to his bedroom to watch TV and sleep.

Let's just say Mac's either too lazy or too exhausted when he comes back from assignments to go up to his bed. But indeed if there's intrusion he's quickly to it. However Mac did have a portable phone.

Yeah I was referring to them being called "Ladies"
They seemed more like drunken ladettes than ladies.
He also uses the term "lady" to address a unpleasent female---like Ingrid in the Enemy Within, Tanya in Lost Love and Rachel in the Prometheus Syndrome. Mac just about lost his temper with Rachel, although funny as it turned out she was the most honorable out of the three women mentioned.

well from what we have seen before it seems like mac likes to sleep with tv playing more than likely a cowboy movie, maybe he doesn't have a tv upstairs?
Now technically I'm driving a stolen car following a kidnapping... and I didn't even get to have my first cup of coffee. (Mac) Your burning hot MacGyver... And so is Pete! ! (Murdoc) Does anyone have a knife?? Yes...it has lots of different blades (Macgyver music plays while mac examines the knief) ...I know Why are you taking your pants off?? You got a better idea? I'm still trying to figure out what yours is!!

Wasn't there a tv when he enters the houseboat in the living room? Maybe he got two sets.

I sleep on my couch when I'm sick with my little dog. She comes and lays behind me. My husband doesn't like it. But with asthma, and getting up at 2 and 3 in the morning it doesn't seem fair to keep him up with my wanderings.

Mac had a little TV/VCR combo down in his living area. We see it in a couple of different places in various episodes (Serenity, Legend of the Holy Rose, Jerico Games, The Odd Triple, Children of Light, etc.)
MacGyver's Women and High Control are the only eps where we see Mac's bedroom in any detail, and then the TV I only remember from M'sW. I bet they didn't even have a set for his bedroom until that season!

Cool! I want that houseboat.

Yeah I was always under the impression that internal shots where on a sound stage.
But if you look at the pictures here and particularly the picture of the empty house and then start thinking about how they always seemed to use the same camera angles, it does actually start to seem possible.
Also consider that the picture of the back side of the boat shows the afore mentioned alcove to be an entry way, which would allow a camera and sound-man to position themselves behind that desk to get many of those shots which appear to be made from that location.
It'd be great to find some out-takes of houseboat scenes, or someone who worked on the crew in those scenes.

The picture of the houseboat nowadays. Waah!!! It's got a fresh look in the blue but the original color so much more Mac!!!

Yeah the natural earthy tones are very much MacGyver, but the blue is great camouflage.
It just occurred to me that this would be a great question to ask RDA at a conference or something. "were the houseboat internal scenes shot in the boat, or on a sound stage?"
hmmm.... maybe we should have a thread for questions to ask RDA.

Sounds like a good plan.

Didn't he say in Humanity he is an insomniac? I know what that feels like and sometimes the couch, i.e., not your ordinary bedroom, is a much better option to try and actually get some sleep. Then you make it into a habit and, there you go. Then if you happen to fall asleep in front of the TV sometimes it is just too hard to move to the bedroom.
I also seem to vaguely remember that yes, Mulder from the X-Files did have a bedroom he never used until season 6(?) when Mimi Rogers actually "prepares" the bedroom. Maybe someone with the actual DVDs can clarify?
I sleep on my couch right much. Like I said in a earlier post because of asthma. Sometimes the medications make me tooo hyper. It to me is also easier to get to the breathing machine. I feel bad because I don't want to keep my husband up all night long. I wish they would show MacGyver reruns, but they don't. I do still get Stargate SG1, and will watch that.
