Jack had finished his explanation when they arrived at the marina parking lot. Charging into the boathouse they snatched up the box with the clues and went back to the truck. With Mac driving Jack read the riddle that was attached to Pete's beeper.
"Bird of rumour, bird of myth, Pete is someone you cannot miss. Hunt him high, hunt him low. To the depth of hell you may have to go."
"A rumour, a myth, a legend of some sort." Mac uttered to Jack trying to determine what it means. "What do you think?"
"High, low...he could be anywhere. Let's try the next line. To the depth of hell, Some where hot, but where?" Jack responded. "We have to hurry. Time is running out faster than you think. It's already a quarter to eight."
"Alright, let me think for a moment. Bird of rumour, bird of myth. Hunt him high, hunt him low. PHOENIX!" Mac screamed out as he cranked the steering wheel to the right causing Jack to be thrown into the door.
"Will you let me in on this?" Jack interrupted Mac's thoughts as he tried to get comfortable on his seat.
"Let’s see if I can explain this. Phoenix is a bird rumoured to have lived for five or six hundred years. After consuming itself in fire it raises again from the ashes. Sort of a rebirth. It's an emblem of immortality. You follow?"
"Yah, I understand now. So what are you doing, joy riding? Let’s go!"
They were practically out of the truck before it came to a complete stop. They ran in the front door, but didn't know where to go from there. "Now let's think, where would Murdoc hide Pete?" Mac said pulling out his security pass card and flashing it to the night guard.
"If I'm correct you said The Phoenix was consumed by fire. If I was The Phoenix where would I go?" Jack stated.
"The Boiler room!" Mac exclaimed racing for the elevator.
In the elevator Mac hit the button to the basement and it activated a recording. "Glad you can make it MacGyver and Jack. If you really want to get closer to The Phoenix here is your chance. You have five minute to assess the problem and stop the elevator from falling. See you in hell!" With that came the sound of the elevator shifting.
"What are we going to do now Mac?" Jack wondered as he looked at Mac.
"The top! Try the top!" Climbing onto Jack's shoulders Mac saw that the exit was welded shut. "We're trapped! There's no escape!"
"What do you mean we're trapped? There's got to be a way out. Mac, don't let me down. Use your brains." Jack was protesting.
"Well you could help me you know!" Mac roared back.
"I know!" Jack was almost paralysed with fear. He borrowed Mac's pocket knife and removed the control panel. Right away Mac knew what Jack was up to. He was trying to rewire the controls to activate the doors.
"Hurry Jack, we only have minutes left! Get those doors open now!" The elevator shifted again.
"I'm hurrying as fast as I can! If I make the wrong connections I'll really do us in!" Jack remarked.
As the seconds ticked away panic swelled up in them as Jack worked feverishly at the wires. With thirty seconds left he put the final two wires together and prayed.
Twenty-nine, twenty-eight, twenty-seven, nothing happened. "What's wrong Jack? Why aren't the doors opening?" Mac inquired.
"I don't know what is wrong. It always works with planes, but this is the first time I tried to hot wire an elevator." Jack replied.
"Let me see if I can detect the problem. Everything looks in order. I don't know." Mac had a worried look in his eyes. The look of defeat. Fifteen, fourteen, thirteen. It was as if lightening hit him. He knew what the problem was. Jack forgot to switch the emergency power switch back on.
The second Mac switched it back on the doors slid open. "Go, go, hurry up Jack!!"
Two seconds after they got out of the elevator it fell smashing into the basement. Vibrations from the elevator crashing almost caused them to fall.
They ran to the stairs and hurried down to the basement.
"How long do we have to get Pete?" Jack yelled running down the hall and towards the boiler room.
"Ten minutes. We have to hurry."
Reaching the doors to the boiler room they discovered it was locked. Taking out his pocket knife Mac began to work on the lock. It took him only seconds to pick it.
"Pete, you in here?" Jack called opening the door.
To the right they saw Pete gagged and restrained to a chair. They didn't see the pressure building up in the boiler. It was about to blow.
They untied Pete only to hear him bellow. "Out, we have to get out! It's going to blow!"
Just escaping from the room the boiler blew and sent them smashing into the opposite wall. Mac was the first to recover from the blast followed by Pete and then Jack. Looking at Mac's watch he saw that the explosion happened right on time.
"Is everyone alright?" Mac questioned helping Pete up.
"Ah, I'm fine. A little bruised, but fine." Jack responded rubbing his soar arms.
"I think I can make it." Pete replied as he struggled to get up with Mac's help.
All they could see was dust and debris as they looked back at what was left of the boiler room. There was nothing left of the boiler except wall to wall water and metal imbedded in the walls.
"There's nothing we can do here, so we had better be going. The next person to locate is Mallory." Mac said heading towards the stairs.
"What a way to spend your birthday, Mac. I'm really sorry we ruined it. The five of us should have been able to handle Murdoc." Pete apologized as they ran up the stairs to the main floor and out the door.
"Don't worry about it, I just hope we can find the rest of the gang before their time is up." Mac climbed into the driver's seat and noticed a letter taped to the steering wheel. Taking it Mac read it out loud.
"I'm glad you made it out of the elevator, but I hope Pete survived a sudden flash flood. For Mallory it is going to be a very fun ride. So, have fun finding her.” Signed, Murdoc.
Mac stared at the note for a moment then spoke. "Well, what does the letter attached to Mallory's locket say?"
Searching through the box on the bottom of the truck's floor Jack picked up the locket carefully and handed the letter to Pete so he could read it.
Opening the envelope Pete took out the riddle. "It reads; Mirror, mirror on the wall. Is she safe or will she fall? The place where she is, is not always what it seems to be. If you find her you are one step closer to finding me."
Putting the riddle back into the envelope he let it fall to the floor. "So what are we waiting for, an invitation?" Jack broke into Pete's thoughts as he spoke to Mac.
Pulling out of the drive Mac glanced into his rear view mirror to see Pete staring out the front window. "Are you okay? Pete, is there something wrong? You look kind of down."
"No, I'm fine. I was just thinking how five people can allow one person to take them hostage." Pete lowered his head.
"Murdoc is an evil man. It would have been dumb for you to resist. Now if you are okay, let's see if we can find your daughter." Mac turned the corner and started heading to the outskirts of town.
"Let's see if we can work this out. Pete read me the riddle again."
Bending over Pete picked up the envelope and reread the riddle to Mac. He went through all the places Murdoc could have hidden Mallory. But he turned up empty.
"Pete, Pete, you there?" Jack asked tapping Pete on the shoulders.
"Oh, ah, are you talking to me?" Pete snapped out of his daydream.
"Yeah, we were wondering if you knew of any place where Murdoc could have hidden Mallory."
"No, I can't think of any possible place. I wish I could, but I can't.”
"Can you think of any place Mallory likes to go?" Mac asked.
"Well, she always liked to go to movies and see plays. But she really likes to go to carnivals and fairs when they are in town." Pete remembered Mallory as a little girl, taking her to the carnivals and fairs all the time. "That's it! She is at the Bel View Fair at the other end of town."
"I don't get what you mean." Jack was lost with the notion.
"I know what he means." Mac noted the point. "Just listen for a minute. What place do you know that is never what it seems and has mirrors and rides?"
"Now I know what you are getting at!"
Speeding down 6th avenue the front right tire blew. Mac stopped the truck. "Great, just great!" Mac cried hitting the steering wheel. Jumping out of the truck Mac ran to the back where he met Jack.
While Mac was taking the flat off, Pete and jack took the spare and rolled it to Mac. They had some trouble getting the spare on, but they managed to do it.
They were moving again in ten minutes and went faster to make up for lost time. Turning around the final turn they entered a field only to run into a parked moving truck that was in their way. Having to reroute to a different street they finally arrived at the fair entrance with three quarters of an hour left to locate Mallory.
"Jack, you go right, Pete, left, and I'll go straight."
They separated and Jack went right to investigate the food stands. While investigating around the buildings, suddenly a hand grabbed him around the mouth and then blackness.
Reaching the last row of games Pete was engulfed in a cloud of smoke that knocked him out.
Part 3 to come.
