I did -- although I had to get up at zero-dark-thirty, or rather 4 am! (And I staggered back to bed after a relatively short lunar communion.)

It was worth it, though -- just magnificent. We had totally clear skies for once. (I've missed a lot of really neat astronomical events due to clouds.)

I was up but I was watching TV, not the eclipse. biggrin.gif
(Seriously, I didn't remember it was going on.)

(And I wasn't up really because I wanted to- but the broken air conditioning made it hard to sleep)

- At first I thought the thread was referring to the 1987 Cher and Nicholas Cage "Moonstruck" movie- I definitely wasn't watching that either. smile.gif

It was glorious.

Total lunar eclipses don't happen in midwestern skies very often. I just wish that I could have watched it from somewhere out in the country, away from the city lights. *sigh* Alas... it was a school-night. tongue.gif

Supposed to be another lunar eclipse later this year. It will be the third one in this calendar year. I don't know if it'll be visible here, so maybe our friends in the Isles will get to see it this time! smile.gif

It was great! I loved it! At first we had a lot of clouds covering the moon - but then it emerged victoriously!

Luckily, the eclipse occured around 8pm over here! biggrin.gif

Dreams are important, otherwise sleep is just eight hours of nothing.

I call it an obstacle course. Some of the others call it MacGyverland.

Must have duct tape ... Lots of duct tape.

I wanted to see it, but the full eclipse was taking place at 0230 MDT. I had to teach a class today to the site managers so I opted for sleep instead. Needed to be on my game with my high profile group.

To be honest though, the eclipse would have been much more interesting and fun.

Unfortunately, it was cloudy and rainy here, so I only got to see footage of it on the news. sad.gif My grandmother has a pretty spectacular photo of a solar eclipse, though--you can see the "ring" of the moon. She's almost a professional photographer, and she takes some amazing photos.

On a similar subject -- who here has seen a total solar eclipse?

I was a little wee skirt at the time... I barely remember it, but I think I was in kingergarten, which would make it... erm...

Seen partial solars, since then, but not another total.

A long time ago... probably when I was a kid. It was a big thing then. Parties, those weird cardboard viewers... the teachers handed them out in school.

I remember that. It was in the early 70's and I remember seeing it with my grandparents. Very cool. I think I'll miss the next one though.

I saw a solar eclipse once. I was in high school, and they wouldn't let us out to watch it. So between classes, I walked out onto the sidewalk and looked up. Fortunately, it was somewhat cloudy, so that made the eye burn less bad. I looked at the eclipsing sun for several seconds, while squinting hard (no sunglasses), until I finally had to look away. No one else seemed to notice.

My most vivid memory of a partial solar eclipse was in my latter highschool years (1982-4)

I was loitering around a friend's house, walking underneath this massive magnolia tree he had in his front yard, and I happened to look down at the pavement. The sunlight was filtering through the thick leaves, and all the little sunbeams were leaving perfect cresent-shaped spots of light on the ground. It was quite magical! smile.gif

And it was then that I realized, unless you have a telescope with a sun-filter, the best way to view a (partial) solar eclipse was by looking down! wink.gif
