Yes, it was a sad day when they stopped. But there is one in a later MacGyver season, I think 5th, where Mac hides in a huge box the guys think is a hot tub, and rescues the guy who went on to play Boser his neighbor. The episode name escapes me at the moment.

It's the first episode of season 5, The Legend of the Holy Rose pt 1, that this opening gambit appeared.

I remember it opening with Mac waking up in the middle of the ocean.

Someone REALLY needs to rewatch Holy Rose tonight. What a shame.

I have the DVDs. I'm just not as much of a fan of MacGyver as I thought I was.

Guess I'll have to watch Holy Rose, but that's gonna have to wait (sacriledge I know) until the weekend.

I have a hankering to watch that now... *sigh*

The "opening gambit" was a nice way to start off Season 5 in "The Legend of The Holy Rose" (Parts 1 and 2).
However, this opening gambit does have a bit of a connection to the rest of the story only in that you think what turns out to be Zoe Ryan is really the bad guys coming for revenge.
But yeah- it still stands as a separate storyline pretty much, so it can certainly count as an opening gambit. That was pretty neat to see resurface past the 1st. Season.
I also tend to think of the first scene with Mac stopping the robbers in the grocery store from "Blow Out" as an opening gambit of sorts, since it doesn't have much connection to the rest of the episode (other than to establish that MacGyver is sick with a cold.)

lol - I remember, back in the day, thinking that was so great; that even MacGyver felt crappy once and a while . Of *course* I felt sorry for him for having a cold.... but it was nice to see a hero not so perfect for once, ya know? And he was *still* cool!!
