Maybe because you're more likely to survive a meeting with MacGyver than a meeting with Jack Bauer, who tends to kill everyone he meets--even, and especially, if he likes you!

They are all fictional heroes too, but using mostly brawn instead brains... and Lara Croft? I never played the game, but I saw the movie. More gadget oriented then anything else. All heroes in their own right, smart, good looking, brave... but yeah, Mac would be my choice. Indiana Jones would be my second choice.

Seriously though, reading that article reminded me that my hurricane kit hasn't been updated and replenished since '04, when the trio of hurricane came through here. And now I hear that Hurricane Humberto hit landfall in southern Texas and Louisiana last night. Scary.

Of course people would pick MacGyver. A guy who can think his way out of trouble is much more reliable than one who uses violence to solve problems.

For me it depends on the environment I'm in. If I work for CTU, I probably work according Jack Bauers method (no emotions). Am I an archeologist, I'd take on my hat and whip. Am I field operative for Phoenix, I'd take the duct tape and knife.

Making my heroes list would be difficult. MacGyver will always be the number one. But there is someone I think that also should be in that list. Maybe it's a bit too early for him to be in that list already but I was thinking of Michael Scofield. In some ways he's like MacGyver. He can think fast and decide in difficult situations and he's intelligent.

This poll/article was in my local newspaper also... likely because of hurricane preparedness. They should extend the poll... for more than 1049 people and in to other countries. I think they'd be surprised how many would would pick MacGyver.

Most of the first 2 seasons where about MacGyver surviving.. taking what ever was around him and using it to survive the situation, so to me it makes perfect sense that he would be the number one survival option.

Ahhh... yes. And not just because he's him but having a well-trained SpecOp/Special Forces trained officer in any military branch would a plus. They're trained for EVERYTHING.

But... MacGyver WINS! Hands down, everytime...

Looks to me like he's gainned weight too. Though when you think about the way he looked in the Mastercard MacGyver commercial compared to the way he looked in the SG-1 episode 200, I think he got back in working shape

wow- just saw that. I love that RDA signed his last note "Mac". Good to know he still remembers and freely acknowledges his MacGyver roots!
(Some actors can't always handle being known for only 1 role. RDA has a good handle on it. In RDA's case, of course, he's known for different roles- but much as Jack O'Neill has gotten to be popular, I don't think he'll ever be more widely identified with a character than MacGyver.)

Richard Dean Anderson will always be MacGyver, just like Tom Selleck is Thomas Magnum and Harrison Ford as the only Indiana Jones.

I would say he’ll always be MacGyver and he’ll always be Jack O’Neill as well – he gave his audience the wonderful gift of two distinct characters, each different, each complete, each a masterpiece of the actor’s craft. Some luck is always involved in a career, but it’s what a person does with the opportunities their luck provides that really makes the difference in the end.

The only thing that I don't like about Jack is that he uses guns. I grew up with RD saying he despises guns and then you see him walking around on your screen shooting and all.

After a while I bought into it and I totally nelieved the character of Jack, but somewhere deep inside it somehow still surprises me.

Can't say I'm surprised by this one!

When I think of RDA first thing that comes to mind is Avalon, after that MacGyver.

I love RD and I love MacGyver, but be careful you don't see them as 1.
