I found this fan-fic sitting on my computer. I can't remember who originally wrote it, but I know it was posted here and lost in the crash, so I'm reposting it now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I was a kid in Minnesota, the winters meant hockey and the summers meant vacation. Three months of unlimited fishing, swimming and exploring that always went by way too fast.
When I was 11 years old, my cousin Misty came to spend the summer with us while her parents worked out some kind of personal difficulty they were having. My mom told me I didn’t need to know details.
Misty is actually my second cousin…her father and my father were cousins. She lived all of her life back east and I’d never met her before. She was 9 years old and I wasn’t about to spend my summer entertaining her. What I really wanted to do was hang out with my buddies without her tagging along. But mom said that I should do my best to make sure she had fun.
I wasn’t too thrilled the day she arrived. But when she showed up carrying a fishing pole, I thought to myself…“Hey…maybe this won’t be so bad”.
Well, Misty and I hit it off right away. She even fit in great with the guys. When it came to fishing…I’ll tell ya…this New York girl put all us Minnesota boys to shame. Although she couldn’t stand gutting the fish…so, I’d do that for her.
I took her to the local ice rink where I’d spent most of my youth. She wasn’t a very good skater though…but by the end of the summer, she could skate as good as me. Well…almost.
It turned out to be one of the best summers I can remember. Although I did lose a whole month’s allowance when my mom found out that we’d gone skinny dipping together. Mom said I should have known better. Well…I guess she was right. But, hey...it was a really hot, sticky day.
Misty was an only child, too. And even though she was having a good time, I could tell she was sad and worried about what was happening between her parents.
One afternoon, we were alone out in the woods. As we sat under a shady tree, she told me that her parents had been fighting a lot and she was scared that they were getting divorced. She was afraid she wouldn’t be seeing her dad anymore if he had to move away.
She asked me where my dad was and I told her that he died in a car accident with my grandmother in December. I suddenly realized that this was the first summer without my dad…and it really got to me. I started to cry. Without saying a word, she took hold of my hand. And when I looked up at her, she was crying too. We formed a special bond that summer and I felt very close to her.
Misty became like a little sister to me. I knew I was going to miss her when she left…and I did. We kept in touch for a while, but when her parents divorced, we lost track of one another.
So, I was really surprised when she called me. She said she was coming out for a visit and asked if I could pick her up at the airport. I told her that I wasn’t sure if I would even recognize her after all these years. She said “Don’t worry…I’ll be the one carrying the fishing pole”.
A few days later, I went to pick her up. And sure enough, she was carrying a fishing pole. She had grown into a beautiful young woman. When she looked at me and smiled, I could see in her face the sweet little girl that I remembered.
I brought her back to the houseboat and gave her my room. After she settled in, the two of us settled down and talked about that summer and about our lives since. She’s working as a paralegal in a New York law firm and was in LA for a vacation. I tried to explain what I do for a living, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t make it sound sane.
Speaking of sanity…guess who’s knocking at my door? That’s right...it’s my old buddy Jack Dalton. And I have no doubt he’s here to test my sanity…again.
“Hi ya Mac…how ya’ doin’ Compadre?” he says in his boisterous way.
“Hi, Jack…what do you want?” I reply in a cynical tone of voice.
“I’m hurt, Mac…what makes you think I want something?”
“Oh…just a wild guess”
“Say…Mac…who’s this gorgeous creature gracing your humble abode?” Jack says as he saunters over to Misty.
“Jack…meet my cousin. Misty MacGyver…Jack Dalton” I say as I reluctantly introduce him to Misty.
“Enchante, Mademoiselle MacGyver” Jack says as he kisses Misty’s hand in a continental fashion.
“Awww…Geez, Jack, don’t embarrass me”
Misty laughs as she says, “I take it he’s a friend of yours?”
“Well...” saying with a tilt of my head.
“Why yes, my dear girl” Jack interrupts. “Mac and I go way back. Shall I tell you about the time…”
“Jaaaack…why don’t you just ask me what you want me to do, so I can say NO!!!”
“Can’t I pay a visit to my best friend without having ulterior motives?” Jack says in an innocent tone of voice.
“I don’t know, Jack…it’s never happened.” I say with a touch of frustration as I recall Jack’s escapades.
“Mac, ol’ pal of mine, this time it’s really legit. Imagine…you and me…in sunny Arizona…searching for the Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine!”
“NO!…NO!!…NO!!! You’re not going to sucker me into another one of your get rich quick schemes!! They’re nothing but disasters!”
“Hey, Mac, nobody’s 100%”
“You are Jack…you sucker me in every time.”
“Ok…Ok…I can see you’re not enthused by the idea. Just forget it. So…Misty…has your cautious cousin shown you the sights of our fair city?”
“Well…I just got here a couple of hours ago.”
“Then, Misty my dear, allow me to escort you on a tour of our beautiful city…that will be made all the more lovelier by your presence.” He says as he takes hold her hand.
“Oh man, Jack…” I say sarcastically.
“Pay no attention to him…what do you say?” Jack says with a wide smile.
“It sounds interesting, Jack…” Misty replies.
“Fabulous!” Jack says excitedly.
“…but only if Mac comes along” Misty adds.
“But, Misty, darling, I had a more intimate evening in mind. Music…Merlot…moonlight and maybe even some madness…and no chaperone around to spoil the fun” Jack says with a sly laugh.
“Forget it, Jack” I say, verbally putting my foot down…if that’s possible.
“Alright…but it won’t be as much fun.” Jack says in a disappointed tone.
The three of us take off in my Jeep and head for Jack‘s favorite nightspot. The music is loud and so is the crowd. No sooner do we find a table, Jack grabs Misty’s hand and takes her to the dance floor. I order some drinks for us.
I don’t know if I trust Jack…especially where Misty is concerned. So, I’m going to keep an eye on him as they dance. As I’m watching them dance, I’m approached several times by women wanting to dance with me. Faking a knee injury, I politely refused them all.
After several fast dances, a slow song is played. Not wanting to slow dance with Jack, Misty leads him back to our table. Hmmm…she’s a smart girl.
“Well, Jack, you’re quite a dancer…” she tells him.
“Thank you, my dear” Jack replies.
“Will you guys excuse me? I need to...uhhh…powder my nose.”
“Sure” I say.
Jack point Misty in the direction of the ladies room. Jack is energized and I can tell he’s taking a shine to Misty.
“Wow! Mac…why didn’t ever tell me you had such a cute cousin? So…do you think she likes me?”
“Jack…do me a favor and just cool it…would ‘ya? Besides, I think you’re going to have some competition…” I say as I notice two guys blocking Misty’s path to the ladies room.
She seems agitated by them. Maybe I should step in. No…it looks like they’re backing off. Several minutes later, Misty returns to our table.
“Are you ready to hit the dance floor again?” Jack asks.
“No, I think I’d like to go back to the houseboat…I’m very tired.”
“Alright. Come on, Jack…let’s go ”
We drive back to the houseboat. Jack heads for home and Misty goes upstairs and gets into bed. I crash on the sofa downstairs. She said she was tired, but I don’t think she’s sleeping. I can hear her tossing and turning. Maybe it’s just the strange surroundings.
The next morning, Misty comes down the stairs…looking like she hadn’t slept at all.
“Good Morning, Misty.”
“Good Morning, Mac.”
“How ‘bout some juice?” I say as I hold out a glass of orange juice.
“Thanks” she says as she takes the glass from my hand.
“Did you sleep alright?” I ask…although I already know the answer.
“I slept fine, Mac.” she says as I look at her…wondering what’s wrong.
I walk outside to get the morning paper and I notice a car parked across from my house. The two guys sitting in it look like they didn’t sleep too well either. In fact, they look like the same two guys that Misty ran into last night. Perhaps they are the reason Misty couldn’t sleep. I think I’d better find out.
“Misty…those two guys from the club last night are parked outside.”
“They are???” she replies in an uneasy tone of voice.
“You’re a very attractive woman, but don’t you think they’re carrying their admiration for you a bit too far?”
“Oh Mac…I’m so sorry.” she says as she rubs her face with her hands.
“Misty…what in the world is going on?” I ask as I lead her to the sofa.
She sits down, takes a deep breath, and tells me the story.
“Three weeks ago, the law firm where I work took on an important client. They referred to him only as Mr. R. Well, when Mr. R heard my name, he did some deep digging and found out that you and I were related. Apparently, he had a very unpleasant encounter with you in the past. So, Mr. R gave the law firm a choice…either keep him as a client or keep me as an employee. Well…they made their choice…and it wasn’t me.”
“I’m sorry about that…”
“Yeah, me too. But, if that wasn’t bad enough, Mr. R sent two of his henchmen to have a little talk with me.”
“The same two that are sitting outside?”
“Yes”
“What’d they want?”
“In a word…you.”
“Oh really?”
“They tracked down your address and phone number and gave them to me. This time, they offered me the choice. Either I kill you or they’d kill me.”
“What??? Why didn’t they just try to kill me themselves?”
“I guess they figured it would be cleaner for them to have me do it.”
Misty gets up and walks over to her purse and retrieves a small vile.
“They saw an opportunity to kill you by getting someone close enough to you to give you this.” she says as she shows me the vile.
“Poison?”
“Undetectable, untraceable and painless…so they say.”
“How considerate of them…”
“They were expecting me to put it in your drink last night. They were watching me.”
“and that’s why you wanted to leave so soon…”
“Yeah, Mac. There was no way I would go through with it, but I didn’t know what to do. When I was in New York, they were constantly following me. They kept threatening my life. So I thought…if I came here and told you, you’d know what to do.”
“Well, the first thing I’ve got to do is get you to a safe place. My friend, Pete, can set that up.”
“No, Mac…I want to stay here and help you. They’ve only given me 24 hours to do it before they go to Plan B…and time’s almost up.”
“Well, that’s OK…I wasn’t too crazy about Plan A anyway.” I say jokingly, trying to put Misty at ease.
“Seriously, Mac…what are we going to do?”
“Well, they want to kill me…so…let’s not disappoint them.”
“What???”
“I’ve got an idea.”
“What can I do?”
“You’re going to pretend to call an ambulance when you find me collapsed on the floor.”
“Huh?”
“Only it’s going to be an phony ambulance with a couple of phony paramedics inside. But, unfortunately, they’re going to be too late…I will be dead already.”
“What???”
“Then, they will take my lifeless body away. All the while, your friends outside will be watching.”
“You’re going to fake your own death???”
“Yep…with the help of my friend Pete. He has connections with a TV production company and they have just what we need.” I say, as I pick up the phone to call him.
“Hi Pete…I’ve got a big favor to ask of you.”
As I explain the situation to Pete, Misty is nervously pacing the floor. Pete says he’s going to call his friends and set it up. He’ll call us back when they’re ready…probably in about an hour from now.
In the meantime, I’m going to try and calm Misty down…she’s so worried. I think I’ll call Jack and ask him to come over. That should distract her until Pete calls. About twenty minutes later, Jack arrives at the houseboat.
“Howdy boys and girls!” Jack says as he enters the door.
“Hi, Jack…thanks for coming over.” I say to him.
“You didn’t have to twist my arm, Mac. I’d jump for the chance to spend time with your charming cousin.”
“Oh, Jack…you’re too much.” Misty says with a smile.
About ten minutes later, Pete calls and says that the ambulance should be here in about fifteen minutes.
In less than fifteen minutes, we hear the sound of sirens coming closer. Soon, the ambulance is in front of my houseboat and the phony paramedics come racing in with a stretcher.
After several minutes, the paramedics carry me out on the stretcher. Once outside and within view of our friends , they cover my body with a white cloth. Jack being…well…Jack, he throws himself over me and starts bawling.
“Get off of me, Jack!…you big lug…I can’t breathe!” I say, in a low but forceful voice.
“I’m trying to make this believable, Mac.” Jack says, under his breath.
“Well, believe me Jack, when I say…Get off of me!…or so help me, I’m going to slug you!!”
Jack finally pulls himself together and let’s the paramedics load me into the ambulance. Our friends quickly call Mr. R to report the good news. They soon leave the scene and head to the airport.
After a while, the ambulance returns me to my house and Pete arrives as well.
As I stand looking at my good friends, I thought comes to me.
“I think tomorrow is going to be a great day to be alive. What do you say we all play hooky and go fishing.” I say to them.
“Hey, that sounds great, Mac!!” Pete replies. Jack and Misty agree.
The next morning, we pack a picnic lunch and head out to my favorite fishing hole about an hour north of the city. No sooner do we get our poles in the water, Misty pulls out a huge bass. It was like time had never passed…she could still out-fish us guys.
“You’re amazing, Misty! How do you do it?” I ask in astonishment.
“Oh…let’s just say that feminine charm can go a long way.” she says with a smile.
“I know exactly how that fish feels. I’ve been reeled in by feminine charm a time or two myself.” Jack says, laughing.
Speaking of reeling in…the police picked up those two guys on outstanding warrants while they were speeding to the airport.” Pete says.
“Glad to hear it!” I say.
“Oh…one more thing. The Phoenix Foundation needs a paralegal at their New York offices. Would you be interested, Misty?” Pete says.
“Would I?…You bet!!” Misty says with excitement in her voice. She reaches over to Pete and gives him a big hug.
“Wow… that’s great Pete. But Misty, just because we’re on different coasts, that doesn’t mean we can’t see each other more often.” I say.
“I loved to see you again, Mac...anytime.” she says with a warm smile.
As the four of us sit there…Jack on my left, Misty on my right and Pete sitting next to her, I pause to just enjoy this moment in time. Sitting under a sunny sky, being surrounded by my good friends and fishing. It doesn’t get much better than this.
But the cool morning soon gives way to a warm afternoon.
“Gosh…it’s getting hot out here.” Jack says as he wipes the sweat from his brow.
“If we weren’t in mixed company, we could have gone skinny dipping.” Jack says with a hearty laugh.
Misty and I turn and look at each other…smiling bashfully as we remember that hot summer day, many years ago, when it didn’t matter.
THE END
