Murdoc’s evil laughter echoed in MacGyver’s ears. Regaining his senses, he quickly glanced around. To his relief he noticed the situation lacked cameras, Murdoc’s trademark for an imminent death . Aloud he demanded, “Where’s Jack?”
“Oh, don’t worry about him,” Murdoc sneered. “You’ll be joining him very soon. Now get moving.” Murdoc abruptly grabbed his jacket and shoved him down the trail. As MacGyver reluctantly complied, he looked back with sadness at the empty cliff and uttered a barely audible sigh.
After tramping for roughly fifteen minutes down the trail MacGyver and Andy had been headed for, MacGyver noticed he and Murdoc were approaching a snow-covered mound. Motioning for MacGyver to stop walking, Murdoc moved ahead and pulled off a piece of the mound. After unlocking the revealed door, it swung inward and Murdoc roughly shoved MacGyver inside and began to blindfold him. Spinning him in circles, MacGyver quickly lost his sense of direction. He was forced down multiple hallways and spun at every corner. Murdoc paused for a moment and MacGyver heard the lock of a door click open. His blindfold was removed and upon entering the room, he immediately noticed the form of a human lying in a heap in the corner. Giving MacGyver a final shove, Murdoc ordered, “Don’t move.” Backing away, Murdoc stooped down and grabbed something off the floor. Every muscle in MacGyver’s body tensed as he expected the worst. Murdoc quickly came forward and forced MacGyver to lie on the floor with his hands behind his back. Next, he bound MacGyver’s wrists and ankles. Gloating in a nonchalant manner Murdoc said, “I have one last surprise for you! When I leave, I’m going to activate a countdown, and when it reaches zero, well, good riddance MacGyver, “he finished menacingly. And with that, he left the room, and MacGyver heard him lock the door. Immediately MacGyver hissed, “Jack. Psst. Jack”
“Unh…” the figure moaned. MacGyver began to turn himself so that his body was parallel to the figure’s. Having accomplished this, he slowly and quite painfully began to roll in that direction. “One more time,” he thought. Finally, he had done it! MacGyver ran his eyes over his friend, inspecting him for damage. To MacGyver’s eyes, Jack looked pale and bedraggled. Suddenly, MacGyver noticed the room had an eerie red glow to it. Rolling over, his eyes quickly located the source of the light. A red timer had appeared above the door; it read 15:00 and began to count down. “Great,” MacGyver muttered.

“I’m freezing,” she thought before she opened her eyes. Opening them, she realized why she was so cold. All she could see was a bit of the cloud covered sky and snow, lots of snow. “Owwwwwwwww,” she groaned aloud. Thinking aloud she said, “Last thing I remember, the mountain gave way and I was falling. The snow must have broken my fall.” As an afterthought, she added, “And maybe me.” She struggled to sit upright and get off her back. Once she was sitting, she realized there was a searing pain in her head. Twisting around, she saw a large patch of red snow and touching her face, felt a fresh flow of blood start. Darkness began to close in and she fought to stay conscious. “Gotta find Mac,” she whispered to motivate herself. She then held a snowball to her wound to stop the bleeding. Next, she turned in her cramped space and looked thru her pack for a few essential items. “Knife, flashlight, matches- that’ll do it,” she said. Grabbing a power bar, she ate it as she assessed the wall in front of her. Looking down she chose her flashlight and stuffed the other items in her pockets. At one end of her prison, she began using her flashlight to slowly chip away pieces of the wall to make a tunnel. Slowly and steadily, she made her way into the snow, hoping and praying that it wouldn’t collapse on her. Soon, her flashlight broke thru to the open air. “Good thing I fell close to the edge,” she thought. Hoping her tunnel wouldn’t collapse, she dragged herself out into the open and found herself face-to-face with the cliff towering above her and groaned. “Suck it up, Andy,” she told herself, wincing from her headache as she spoke. She stood up, took a deep breath, and let it out. Feeling for her first handhold, Andy began her long climb upward.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Umph,” grunted Andy as she heaved herself up and over the edge. She collapsed on the ground with all her muscles trembling for a moment, then, looking around, noticed she was alone. Heaving herself to her feet, she began to search for MacGyver, who was nowhere in sight. “Mac,” she called hopefully, but no answer came. She made her limbs carry her to the path she and MacGyver had been making and looked both directions. As she looked right, she noticed two pairs of footprints where there should be none. Sighing, she followed them.
Fifteen minutes later, she arrived at the gigantic pile of snow and there the footprints disappeared. Just as she concluded that MacGyver and whoever was with him must be inside the hill, something caught her attention and she ducked for cover. Confirming her suspicion, someone was coming out of the hill!
Somehow, MacGyver managed to get his SAK out of his pocket and into his hands. Snapping it open, he began to saw at the ropes holding him. With a grunt of pain, he both cut himself free and cut himself. He immediately tackled the job of cutting Jack loose. Just then, Jack moaned and his eyelids fluttered.
“Jack!” MacGyver called.
“Hmmm…” Jack replied. His vision swam, then came into focus. “Took you long enough,” he quipped in a hoarse voice.
MacGyver glanced at the countdown which now read 10:30. “Come on, Jack,” he said, helping his friend up. Quickly stepping to the door, he tried the knob. “Darn. Locked!” he muttered. Whipping out his knife, he bent down and efficiently picked the lock. He cautiously turned the knob and gently pushed the door open. When nothing happened, he stepped into the hallway with Jack close behind him, then abruptly stopped. Beginning to look around, it dawned on him. Murdoc hadn’t been twirling him around and around for no reason. This place was a maze! “Uh, Mac, we’d better hurry and get out, don’t ya think? Don’t you know the way out?”
“Nope.” was all MacGyver said. The clock in MacGyver’s mind was counting down with roughly 8 minutes to go. Picking a direction, he set off down the hallway. Dimly, he heard Jack sputtering behind him, “What do you mean you don’t know the way out?! That’s ridiculous! We’ll be blown to bits!” Ignoring him, MacGyver resolutely began to jog down the hallway, fully expecting Jack to follow.

Barely managing to suppress her excitement, Andy sunk a bit closer to the ground. Peering thru the underbrush, she strained to make out the figure in the fading daylight. Much to her dismay, it was not MacGyver. She watched the shadowy figure make his way to the edge of the clearing where he paused momentarily; then he quickly moved on out of her sight. She waited a few moments, then cautiously jogged to the spot where she saw him come out. Fighting off a wave of dizziness, she struggled to move a heavy cover. She backed off and stood there sizing it up for a minute; then, with a look of fierce determination, summoned all her remaining strength and strained her muscles again. The door creaked loudly. “Almost,” she thought desperately. With a grunt, she shoved with all her might and fell atop it when it suddenly gave way. She lay there panting for a moment, then forced herself to get up. Stumbling to the door, she tried the knob. Much to her surprise, it was unlocked. She pushed the door all the way open and peered inside. “Great. A pitch-black hallway,” she thought. “I’m sooo glad I grabbed my flashlight.” She pulled it out of her pocket and clicked it on. The hallway was empty. Or was it? Leaving the door open behind herself, Andy cautiously stepped inside for a closer look at something. It was a puddle of water. “Think,” she ordered herself aloud. “If MacGyver and that guy came in here, there would have been ice on their shoes, and once it fell off, it would have melted on the floor,” she finished triumphantly. She quickly began to follow the puddles.

“Four and a half minutes left,” MacGyver grimly reminded himself. He slowed then stopped as Jack puffed up behind him. Abruptly, he motioned for Jack to be quiet. “Someone’s coming,” he breathed in Jack’s ear. “How do you know?” Jack replied. MacGyver was pointing, and Jack could now see the faint glow of a light and hear the mysterious person’s footsteps. When he met MacGyver’s eyes, they both knew what they were going to do. In unison, they rushed around the corner and were blinded by the beam of light directed into their eyes. Both pairs of hands flew up to shield their eyes from the blinding light. “MacGyver?” the unknown person whispered in astonishment. The light was immediately lowered and MacGyver recognized the voice as Andy’s. His heart leapt for joy at the knowledge that she was alive! Brushing aside his feelings, he said, “We’ve got to get out of here!” Andy, hearing the urgency in his voice, asked no questions. Whirling around, she commanded, “Follow me!” Setting out at the best run her exhausted body could handle, she fought the darkness invading her vision and retraced her footsteps with MacGyver and Jack right behind. “Any second and this place is gonna blow,” thought MacGyver as they ran. They all rounded one last corner and the door was ahead of them. With a final burst of speed, Andy feebly attempted to keep up with her companions. Outside, night had already fallen. Suddenly, MacGyver noticed Andy wasn’t as close as she had been. He glanced behind himself to see her stagger a few more steps then collapse on the ground. “Keep going,” he shouted to Jack. He sprinted back to Andy and picked up her limp body. He turned and urgently ran as fast as he could manage. Once he reached the edge of the woods, he dove to the ground beside Jack. They both reached out to cover Andy while covering their own heads. KABOOM!!! They both heard and felt the explosion behind themselves. Sitting up, they both sat entranced by the flames, marveling at how close their escape had been.

The sharp smell of disinfectant- this was the first thing Andy smelled when she regained consciousness. When she opened her eyes, everything was swimming. With a groan, she forced her eyes to focus. As she struggled to sit up, a nurse said, “Just relax, dear,” and gently eased her back to the pillows. Andy glanced around tensely, then relaxed when she saw MacGyver and Jack were both seated nearby. “Hey,” she croaked. She took a drink of water as the nurse left the room. Then with a smug look toward the door, Andy slowly sat up. “Ow…” she groaned. Having accomplished this, she threw a triumphant, if not defiant look at MacGyver. His worried face cracked into a grin at her stubbornness. “She’s just as stubborn as you are,” Jack quipped.

The next morning, Andy still wearing a bandage on her head, MacGyver, and Jack stepped out of the hospital. Other than her cuts, the only thing that appeared to be wrong with Andy was a slightly paler color to her face, MacGyver observed. A few feet from the door, Andy raised her arms in a “v”. “Freedom!” she joked. That brought grins to both MacGyver and Jack’s faces. As they sat down in MacGyver’s Jeep, Jack began,” Mac, if Andy feels like that, I got this other deal we could go in on…”
