I'm back! I stayed pretty warm, although yesterday morning was danged cold. That was just before dawn. It warmed up a lot later.

I went to a 250 mile race about 6 hours from my house as a volunteer veterinarian. This race is an Iditarod qualifier (that's the big one in Alaska) and a really big deal for Northern Maine and Quebec, etc. I had fun brushing up on my Francais and hanging out with other vets.

Oh, and the other 'big one in Alaska' is the Yukon Quest. I'm not sure which one you meant. There are many mid-distance races in the lower 48-you just don't hear about them as much. But they have many advantages and a lot of participants, since it isn't quite such a huge expense, etc. Anyway...off I go to catch up more.

A female Canadian won the 30 mile race.

A male Canadian won the 60 mile race.

A male Canadian won the 250 mile race.

It was a good year for Quebec.

My favorite (from Ontario) came in 9th in the 250 and his brother came in 12th in the 60 mile race, so they did alright.

Back in September 2002 when Jade and I took a vacation in Alaska, we saw someone training their dog team for the races. There was no snow, so they had the team of huskies hitched to a 4-wheeler (ATV). It was way cool but I couldn't get the camera out of the bag fast enough to get a picture.

Yeah, they have dryland races, too. Using scooters, ATVs, etc.

Jamaca has a team. Seriously. You can find them online. Leave it to the Jamaicans to take things one step past bobsled.
