I enjoyed Arc, but found it rather lacking in character fun, for me. I might need to rewatch it to be sure, though, as I was still fighting the flu when I watched it the first time. The fact that I haven't rewatched it says something...there are no stand out parts for me. Usually, there are scenes that I simply have to rewatch, etc...nothing comes to mind here except for the comedy of WEAPONS AT MAXIMUM. I laughed so hard at that I went into a ten minute coughing fit, and then I laughed some more. I'm one of those fans that loved '200' and the reference was hysterical.
But not much else was going on for me. But that's Robert Cooper for ya...as opposed to say, Martin Gero...just different story-telling, and that's ok!!!
I'm excited about Continuum, but I'm happily living in spoiler-free land, so off I go!

Does anybody remember the episode in which O'neil andtilk are stuck in a time line? "If this doesn't stop, I'm going to loose it." Tilk gazes at him "Loose it, means go crazy, nuts, insane, bonzo, no longer with the capability of telling when you're short of one happy meal WAAAKOO!!!!" (holds up a plate where he has blotted out a face with ketchup and mustard. Another good part is where they play golf in front of the open gate, man is that funny Stargate is ok, but like Macgyver and other series, it's always the same thing, only different situation and scenario. After a while it looses the inicial spring and it's that funny or exiting, don't you think?
In my oppinion, Graham Bell has a lot to answer for. It gets harder and harder to escape from the world, the news and worst of all, people.

I believe that was "Window of Opportunity" It went something like this... [A tired O'Neill sits in the Commissary, drinking a coffee. Teal'c enters and walks up to him] Teal'c: Colonel O'Neill, should we not be assisting Daniel Jackson with the translation? Jack: I'm taking this loop off. [Teal'c hesitates, uncertain, then takes a seat alongside his friend] Jack: I'm telling you, Teal'c, if we don't find a way out of this soon, I'm going to lose it. [Teal'c throws him a look, eyebrow arched] Jack: It means go crazy. Insane. No longer in possession of one's faculties. Nuts. Out of one's tree. Bonzo. Three fries short of a happy... [FLASH]
That which has been established will endure even with time and at a distance.
I can't tell you anything about what happens after the cameras go off, mostly because I'm usually unconscious by then.

That's called a formula, and you're right, it is extremely common, but that's because the formula works. There's a book out there called Stepping Through The Stargate that talks about the 'real' aspects of SG. It contains a review from top military officers on, say, the effectiveness of the staff weapon in combat (not very good, really) and one on the horrible fashion sense of most of the villians (Ba'al excepted, of course) and one about stilted dialogue from aliens and, yes, the formula.
All stories are told in three acts. Set up, crisis, then resolution. From the Bible to Shakespeare to Star Wars to the abbreviated form of that in episodic television, the formula is present, and the formula works. What keeps people watching the formula isn't the formula itself (even though that pattern of action does pull you in, it does get old), but the characters in your formula. If you can create characters that people adore, they will watch them in the fomula again and again. Underscore your formula with humor, character backstory, and character interaction, and WHAM! You have a show that runs for ten seasons.
(Now, I'm the first to admit that MacGyver, despite its strengths, well...in rewatching as an adult, I'm amazed that it kept going as long as it did...I think in Mac's case it was the idea of having a non-traditional main character that kept folks interested. Lord knows there isn't much character development, etc. And, it really was a children's show, and it found its niche. The heavy-handed 'after school special' morality was welcome in the eighties, esp for families, etc. That is Mac's main strength still. It's pretty much safe for all ages. That and the fact that it's a straight adventure show and makes no apologies for that. It doesn't really try to be anything else (other than those occasional activist episodes, like Black Rhino, etc), and that's perfectly ok. Straight adventure works, too! It just usually doesn't work for quite as long as Mac did-just shows you that he's such a lovable guy he can overcome anything!)
