Welcome to chapter two of the story. In this chapter MacGyver tries to find out what happened and what the deal was of his appointment.
(We fade in with a night exterior shot from The Phoenix Foundation with slow creepy music) Chapter Two The Phoenix Foundation Night Call The Caves
MacGyver parked his jeep in the garage of the Phoenix Foundation and took the elevator to the 8th floor. He had to tell Pete of what happened. (Music stops here) The elevator doors opened and MacGyver continued his way to Pete’s office. Helen his secretary was still there. ‘Hey, Helen,’ he greeted her. ‘Still at work at this hour?’ ‘Hey, MacGyver. Yeah, it’s been a long day and tomorrow is going to last even longer.’ ‘I know,’ he said. ‘Is Pete in his office?’ ‘Yeah, go on in.’ MacGyver knocked on the door. ‘Come in!’ Pete said. MacGyver entered the somewhat dark office. Pete probably turned out a few lights because of the storm. Pete was sitting at his desk and greeted MacGyver. ‘MacGyver, come on in and sit down.’ ‘Thanks, Pete.’ ‘Tell me. How did it go?’ ‘How did it go?’ MacGyver spat. ‘It nearly killed me, Pete.’ ‘What happened?’ ‘When I arrived at the house, no one was there. The whole place seemed deserted with the exception of two dead bodies and a cat.’ ‘I don’t get it.’ ‘Neither do I, Pete. But whatever it was, it wasn’t a meeting point for an assignment but a setup to kill me.’ ‘A setup?’ ‘Yeah. I tell you, Pete that house looked like it was haunted. The windows were boarded shut, the furniture looked like it came right out of the 1930’s. There were even newspapers of that time. Than I found that cat and those dead peoples in the bedrooms and it looked like they were dead for a long time considered the smell.’ ‘Than what?’ ‘Pete, all this time, I had the feeling someone was there. I heard things fall over and thuds. Whoever it was, he lured me down the cellar. He locked me up in some sort of torture room. The walls were bloodied and there was a bomb. I guess he tried to blow me up and the house too. When I got out, I ran back to my car. After starting my car I think I saw something disappearing in the bushes. A shadow or something, but I can’t know for sure because when I went out searching for him, it was like he vanished into thin air.’ ‘Wow, this is quite a story,’ Pete said. ‘Yeah, I know and I want to know what’s going on. Who gave you the order of sending me to that house?’ Pete’s face got worried. He knew who was behind it. ‘MacGyver, I can’t tell you that.’ ‘Why not? We always tell everything to each other. I want to know what’s going on here and who gave that order?’ Pete didn’t respond. ‘Pete?’ ‘MacGyver, please do understand, that I can’t tell you this right now,’ Pete said begging. ‘Than can you give me an answer, why you can’t?’ Pete didn’t respond again for a moment. ‘It’s protocol, MacGyver.’ ‘Protocol?’ MacGyver didn’t believe it. ‘Come on, Pete. There’s nothing major political going on.’ ‘No, but there are regulations.’ ‘Pete, someone tried to kill me. That’s nothing new but I wanna know why.’ MacGyver never expected that Pete would test his patience. ‘Are you going to help me out or do I have to sort it out myself?’ Pete lowered his head. MacGyver understood it. ‘I don’t believe this, Pete. My best friend letting me down?’ MacGyver got up and went back to the door. ‘MacGyver, wait!’ ‘What?’ ‘I’m so sorry.’ ‘So am I.’ ‘Look, just come tomorrow morning and we’ll sort it out.’ ‘Yeah, right. Tomorrow morning. Seven AM?’ ‘Sure.’ MacGyver nodded and left. ‘Was everything alright in there? I heard you two arguing,’ Helen said. ‘No, it’s not alright, Helen. I don’t know what the matter is with Pete and I don’t know what’s going on, but he wanted to sort it out in the morning. Do you know, what’s going on with him?’ ‘He didn’t act different than usual.’ ‘Yeah. Well, he did with me, that’s what troubles me.’ ‘What happened?’ ‘I just went out to receive information on an assignment. Apparently there was no trail of the person I was supposed to meet. It wasn’t a meeting but a setup to kill me and I think Pete knows who tried to kill me.’ ‘And he doesn’t want to tell you?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘He probably has his reasons.’ ‘Yeah, I know and I respect that but if it wasn’t for my life I wouldn’t care what his reasons are, than he can tell me whenever he pleases. My life depended or still depends on it so I want to know what’s going on.’ ‘You sure got a right to know.’ ‘And you don’t know anything by any chance?’ ‘Nope. Pete only speaks to me on need-to-know basis.’ ‘Than I think, I better give it a rest till morning,’ MacGyver decided. ‘Goodnight, Helen.’ ‘Night, MacGyver.’ Pete was still sitting at his desk after MacGyver left. He felt bad how he treated MacGyver. They’ve been friends for such a long time and now this. Pete got up from his desk and stood in front of his window. He took off his dark glasses and rubbed over his face. (Tense music comes up) ‘I did what you asked,’ he said to someone. ‘Perfect,’ a voice said. ‘Now he’s worried. I can go on with phase two of my plan.’ ‘Whatever your plan is, it’ll never work.’ ‘Yes, it will.’ ‘He’ll get you, instead of you getting him,’ Pete said and than he got pulled along. (The music reaches it's peak and we fade out here) MacGyver came back home. Things were going bad lately. It was like everything just went out of business. The marina was a deserted mess. MacGyver’s houseboat was the only one that was still left there. Wooden boards and junk lay everywhere on the decks. Why he still lived there, he didn’t know. Everyone else moved. The storm intensified and he quickly ran to his houseboat. He opened the door and went in. The events of the last hour kept flooding his mind. The strange meeting point, the dead bodies, the cat, Pete who didn’t want to cooperate. Maybe the person who tried to kill him threatened Pete as well to keep his mouth shut. He took off his cap and threw it on the table and also took off his jacket and threw it on the couch, than he went up the spiral staircase to freshen up. It was late already and he figured he could better try to put things in perspective. There was nothing he could do now anyway. He went to his bathroom and flicked the light above the sink on. Troubled he looked to his reflection in the mirror. ‘Why didn’t you say anything, Pete?’ he wondered and turned open the faucet and let the water pour out. He filled his hands with cold water and splashed it in his face than he looked to his wet face in the mirror. With a towel, he dried off his face and left the bathroom. Tired he went back down and installed himself in front of his television. He took his cell phone out of his pocket and placed it on the table, than he took his remote and clicked to turn the TV on. He knew it was dangerous to watch television during a lightning storm but he had to get his mind empty a bit. Not even five minutes passed or he was asleep. (Creepy music comes up again) An hour or so passed when the light of his cell phone jumped on and started ringing. Still deep in his sleep, MacGyver moved somewhat on his couch and reached with his eyes closed to his cell phone. He answered it. ‘Hello?’ he mumbled. Nothing. ‘Hello?’ Now he heard soft sobbing. ‘MacGyver?’ ‘Yeah?’ ‘It’s Helen.’ ‘Helen? What’s wrong?’ ‘Someone took Pete.’ ‘What?’ ‘Pete’s gone.’ ‘Do you know, who it was?’ ‘No! He was masked. I couldn’t recognise him. He told me to call you.’ ‘Is that person still there?’ ‘No. I don’t know where they went off to.’ ‘I think I do. Look, you just relax and take a few breaths. Have you called the police yet?’ ‘No, not yet.’ ‘OK, you call them and explain what happened. I’m going to find Pete.’ MacGyver hung up and left the houseboat again with his cap and jacket on. He had a slight idea that Pete was at that house so he drove back to the house where he just escaped not even an hour ago. (Now the track Sub-level 3 starts playing from Aliens) A familiar view was seen when MacGyver pulled up on that driveway again of the house. He turned his car down again and a little doubtfully he got out. What if Pete was in there? He ran through the rain back into the house. ‘Pete? Pete?!’ It was creepy silent there, maybe even more silent then before. ‘Pete!’ MacGyver went up the stairs again and searched the rooms. The bodies were still there but Pete was nowhere to be found. ‘Pete, where are you?’ Silence was the only answer he got. He ran back downstairs. The cellar door was still open. MacGyver also checked that lead out. But that chances that Pete would be down there were rather small since MacGyver blew up the door. Few minutes later after searching for Pete, he came back up. Maybe he had was wrong about it, thinking Pete would be here. There’s just got to be something that should lead to Pete. MacGyver rubbed over his neck, thinking. He went back outside and searched around the house again. He walked around it and when he reached the back of the house again, he noticed something by a flash of lightning on the ground. MacGyver bend through his knees and waited for the next flash of lightning. ‘Come on,’ he said while looking at the sky. Lightning flashed through the sky and MacGyver saw it again. There were tyre marks on the ground and it let straight into the field behind the house. He followed the trail with his eyes while getting up again. That had to be it. MacGyver ran back to his car, got in and followed the trail with his car. His lights shone on the ground to make him follow the trail. The trail went into the distant woods and further through the trails disappeared in the caves. MacGyver stopped in front of the caves, thinking of what to do next. A few moments passed when he decided to drive a little further into the caves. Not so far from the entrance he stopped the car but kept the lights on and he got out. He was looking at the dark corridor, where the trails were running into. He had to go further but he couldn’t risk it to go further with his car. You never know what obstacles might be on the road that can cause a flat tyre. He went to his trunk and took a flashlight out of it. Carefully he proceeded his way into the caves. His eyes darted in every possible directions for any dangers or even bears. No matter how attentive he was, strangely his conclusion was that it was relatively safe in the caves. But that’s what was worrying him as well. The caves reminded him of the Caves of Darkness. He dreamed about those caves, that he walked through with Merlin The Magician. Only this time he didn’t had to worry about lava pits, falling rocks or dogs with masks. Or did he… The corridor he was walking through ended up in a three-way. MacGyver stopped to think his next move but his thinking was interrupted by a call for help from… Pete. (The music grows intenser) ‘Help, somebody, help me! MacGyver?!’ ‘Pete? Pete!!!’ ‘MacGyver? I can hear you. Where are you?’ ‘I’m here, Pete. Just stay where you are. I’m coming to you.’ All MacGyver had to know is from where the call came from, which was hard to tell. He had to think quick in which way he should take. He decided to take the middle corridor, which appeared to be the correct one because Pete’s voice became more clear. ‘MacGyver, help me out!’ ‘I’m coming, Pete. Just hold on!’ Suddenly when MacGyver carried on in the corridor lights above him jumped on. There had to be a generator somewhere. Now there was light, MacGyver didn’t need his flashlight anymore. He began wondering where the caves were for if there were lights installed. Last time he was in an enlightened cave, it belonged to drug dealers who stashed their supplies in it, to cover it from to DEA in MacGyverland. The corridor turned to the right and than he heard shuffling and heavy breathing. ‘MacGyver?’ (The music grows more intense) Pete’s voice was very close by and from around the corner, he appeared. His face was almost completely covered with blood and also his shirt was bloodied. MacGyver was shocked on how he saw his blind and best friend fall to his knees and onto his belly in the dirt, dangerously wounded. (The music reaches it's peak and we fade out again to fade in with intense music) A moment it looked like MacGyver was frozen but then he regained his senses and tried to help Pete out. He bended over to Pete’s body. ‘Pete, can you hear me? What happened?’ There was no response. ‘Pete? Pete! Hey, Pete, come on!’ MacGyver checked his pulse. Pete still had a pulse but a very weak one. He had to take Pete to the hospital right way. He took of his cap and putted it in his jacket pocket. With all his strength and a deep growl, he lifted Pete who was much heavier than he was onto his shoulders and carried him back to the car. He placed Pete in the car on the passengers seat next to him and clicked down his buckle. Than MacGyver jumped back into the car himself, buckled up and drove out of the caves, back over the field, passed the house, back on the road to the hospital. The storm was over now but the road was still wet. (Now the track Ripley's Rescue plays) MacGyver drove so fast to the hospital but than he noticed in his rear view mirror that a black pick up truck appeared gaining in on him. The black pick up truck bumped in on his back bumper. He recognised the black pick up truck. It belonged to Murdoc. Murdoc drove besides MacGyver now and rammed the Jeep. MacGyver rammed him back. MacGyver remembered the trucker that was send after him when he was doing a study on the effects on ocean life if a marina was build shortly before he met Deborah. He had used his fire extinguisher to get rid of the trucker. That’s what he was going to use this time as well and took the fire extinguisher from beneath Pete’s seat. He opened his window and sprayed the foam on Murdoc’s windshield. It didn’t had much effect though since the fire extinguisher was nearly empty. Murdoc laughed at MacGyver for the failed attempt. There wasn’t much else MacGyver could do since he was driving the car. Murdoc drove off in front of MacGyver’s car and brutally braked. MacGyver couldn’t dodge and that way Murdoc bumped into MacGyver’s front bumper. In a reflex MacGyver extended his arm to keep Pete from falling against the dashboard. ‘Jesus!’ MacGyver wanted to get rid of Murdoc. He pushed his feet on the gas pedal and rammed Murdoc hard. It had more effect than the fire extinguisher. Murdoc went almost of the road and a longer distances between the two cars was created. But Murdoc recovered quickly and gained in on MacGyver again. Again he drove next to MacGyver’s side. MacGyver was fed up with him and threw the fire extinguisher into Murdoc’s windshield. The windshield cracked and Murdoc lost control over the wheel and drove off the road, hitting his head against the wheel but was alright for the most part. Murdoc grinned evilly. He didn’t plan to give up yet. (The music reaches it's peak again and we fade out here)

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.
