*jots down one green doughnut*My evening of listening to music bore fruit . . . well, that and several other evenings over the course of about three weeks. I'd been asked to DJ a dance on Wednesday, with the musical theme "Kick-A$s Celtic". I've never DJ'd anything in my life, and I haven't even run sound equipment since I was in college, 25 years ago.
According to Celtic mythology, there are three types of Celtic music: music that makes you laugh, music that makes you cry, and music that makes you sleep. According to the folkisinger who taught me most of my Irish repertoire, the three types are about love and joy, fighting, and drinking . . . and either way, if you're trying to provide upbeat music for a dance, a random sample has a two out of three chance of getting it wrong.
So I spent three weeks running through every CD in my collection, plus about twenty more that I borrowed from a friend of mine. MP3s? Compilation CDs? Are you kidding? I'm a musical dinosaur. Heck, I was in my late thirties before I even learned to sing into a mike. I spend more time making music than chasing down new formats.
The dance was Wednesday night . . . and it was great! We totally rocked. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and the energy level never sagged. The dance ended at midnight and we chased the last folks out with some really bad pipe music.
I was a complete and utter zombie at work the next day, but it was worth it!
