A bright light flooded the black abyss. Mac could see a bright light. He thought, sincerely concerned, Am I dead?
“Mac? Hello? “ said a familiar voice. Mac moved his head. Vivid colors swirled through his eyes. Soon, he saw the outline of a plump man. His body was all grey, but his head shined against the lamps above. Detail seeped into the figure. It turned out to be Pete Thornton, the old boss.
“Just like the old days, huh?” Mac said, not really expecting an answer. Pete chuckled and approached Mac’s supine body. Mac’s bandaged hand reached up to greet Pete. He followed suit and they grasped hands tightly, like the old friends they were. Pete’s eyes were glistening with tears.
“I thought I lost you there, buddy,” Pete said, biting his lip. Mac shrugged in his bed and answered.
“It’s not me you’ve lost,” Mac said questioningly,” You remember Dr. Zito?” Mac asked, trying to spread some light on the situation. Pete’s face went blank. He pointed blindly across the room at a floral arrangement. It was in the shape of a wheel. A note was resting in the center. Mac sat up and turned to his right. His legs were sore from burns and scars. Pete broke the silence.
“The doctor tells me that you’ve made an excellent recovery. You should be out of here by the end of the day. “ Mac staggered to his feet, wobbling precariously, and slowly stamped over to the flowers. He retrieved the note, a photo of Sam hidden beneath it. He looked at the photo and closed his eyes. I just started being a father and look what happened! He thought as he unfolded the cardstock. He read the mockingly fancy letters aloud.
“Dear MacGyver. Lesson 1- Never get attached to anyone. You may have flunked your test, but let us see how you follow up with the next lesson. With this arrangement you should know where to find me and your son. Remember, if you don’t move fast, you’ll only find me.”
“No one ever recalls seeing Zito enter or drop that off. The cameras didn’t catch it, either. I want to help you, Mac. What can I do?”
“I think this is my battle. I don’t want to drag you into this. But thanks, Pete. You’re a real pal, you know that?” Pete nodded, gazing straight ahead. Mac smiled and said “Alright, where’s my stuff?”
