Chapter 15: An Unscheduled Meeting
Mac leaned against the glass wall of Pete’s office. He massaged his arm, the scar slowly fading away. As he rubbed his elbow, Pete strode into his office.
He jumped as he saw Mac hiding in the corner. His expression went from surprised to concerned as he noticed Mac’s injury. “Are you okay? What happened down there?” “Oh nothing, really. I just took a general hostage, ran off a cliff, got shot in the arm, nearly destroyed the facility, rescued a prisoner, and was flown over the Amazon jungle. Outside of a helicopter, I might add. But I’m fine.” Mac smiled at his sarcastic streak.
Pete followed suit and grinned. He collapsed into his chair. He turned to the computer, typing at lightspeed. He scratched his chin, staring at the small screen. The green letters gave his face an emerald glow. He finally turned back to Mac. “Who next?” he asked, pretty much knowing the answer. Pete gave him a chilling stare.
Mac felt like Pete wasn’t himself. This chill, however, was offset by the continued explanation.
“The other day we received a distress call from our Antarctic outpost. That is where the gravitational weaponry was being researched. Seems they’ve been overrun by three men, none identifiable, and an army of henchmen. Mac, this is the final mission. I wouldn’t want you to go on this, but you’re the only one available. Everyone else is in the safehouses. Be careful out there,” Pete added, his eyes seemingly shining devilishly. Mac backed up, somewhat frightened. He turned around to face the door. A man stood in his way. “Nice fireworks, MacGyver, but the real show is about to begin!” said Quayle as he held a gun to Mac’s stomach.
Mac took a step back, only to hear a bone-chilling puff of air. A sharp, thin object jabbed into his back.
Instantly, he felt his muscles slowing down, refusing to go on. His jaw slacked open. As best as he could, he limped around to see Pete.
As his eyelids sagged shut, Mac saw Pete reclining in his chair, a dart gun trained on him. Mac’s legs gave out, reducing him to a puddle of limp mass on the floor. His eyes shut, a hazy cloud closing in. The last thing he heard was Quayle saying, “Good night, MacGyver…”
