With hockey (ice, not field) being such a strong component of MacGyver's character, I thought there might be some hockey buffs in here.

So with that in mind I thought we might like to have a place where we can talk it up. Not only discussing current games etc, but maybe if MacGyver was a strong influence in you becoming a hockey fan or not, as well as other aspects.

lol, the mighty ducks influenced my love of hockey more than macgyver.

Hockey is just an awesome sport. a TV show doesnt need to tell me that.

I really got into hockey in 94 when the Rangers "broke the curse" to won the cup. They where my team that year

I'd also brought myself a pair of inline skates and the house I lived in at that time was in a fairly new little development and was off a side road, so was pretty secluded and a great place to skate around on the roads.

So I made up a hockey net from wooden pools and... you guessed it... duct tape and had it sitting at the top of my short driveway. so I could skate around the streets and then take shoots at the net.

I managed to hook a friend into skating and then hockey as well, so we spent countless hours playing one on one taking turns at the net etc.

But growing up in a country which only plays field hockey as a little known winter sport. I really only became aware of what Ice Hockey was all about through MacGyver, so MacGyver first peeked my interest to find out more about the game, and things just went on from there.

Pittsburgh Penguins are the first team to advance to the Stanley Cup finals for this year.

That leaves the Detroit Red Wings and Dallas Stars battling it out for the Western Conference Finals spot with the Red Wings in a 3-2 lead.

I never got into hockey until college when I went to a few games with a friend of mine. We watched as many Pens games as we could catch on TV back in the glory days with Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Larry Murphy, Tom Barasso...Man, I can't believe I can remember those names... We'd bet each other on who'd score the next point. Man, those were fun days! Oh, and I loved Mike Lange...the guy who was the Pens announcer for a million years...maybe he still is, I dunno. He was always saying colorful things like "Scratch my back with a hacksaw!" One of his favorites was "Elvis has just left the building!" He'd say that when when they had the game in the bag.

Hockey's great...I can see why Mac would love it... We just watched Thin Ice a few days ago.

Ice hockey's cool- because MacGyver likes it. LOL

And I'm a fan of most any sport- though I can't say I've really played this one. Not much opportunity to do so, really. But I do thoroughly enjoy The Mighty Ducks movies too- and the ice hockey-themed episodes of MacGyver.

And it is pretty neat that the Pittsburgh Penguins are in the Stanley Cup playoffs this year- go Pittsburgh! (Not that I'm actually from there or anything- but a band I like is, so if I cheer for any ice hockey team, it's usually them or the Chicago Blackhawks or the Calgary Flames (for MacGyver).

I'm hoping the Detroit Red Wings win the Western Conference.

Penguins against the Red Wings would be an awesome final series.

Well actually no! I was more of a wrestling fan in my preteens. WCW Nitro and that stuff. Actually none of the sports presented in MacGyver got me to it. Perhaps with exception of boxing but that's more due Rocky than that poor episode. And also racing but that was more due the popularity of The Fast and the Furious and games like that. Chicks, nitrous, dashing cars...

The Penguins seem to be really struggling with Detroit's defense, and really starting to let the frustration show. They pretty well came unglued in the last period of tonights game.

I have to agree with Rocky. I too really got into hockey when I watched the NY Rangers win the Gold for USA! That was really AWESOME! But for the most part, I think RDA had a little influence on me liking the sport. It's really fast paced, and despite the roughness, I really enjoy watching it. I was glued to the tv the whole time this year's playoffs were on tv. It was so exciting watching Dallas, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia battle it out. And then when it got down to Pittsburgh and Detroit, I was really anxious to see who was going to win. It was definitely a real "nail bitter". lol I was really pulling for the Penguins, but I was glad to see Detroit win the cup! Both teams played really hard, and it was a tough game! But I was glad to see Detroit finally get the cup! I'm sure they will be celebrating for a long time! Here is an article I found on the net. Did anyone else hear Tiger Woods comment about hockey? I was a little outraged!

I wouldn't worry too much about what he says.. he thinks Golf is a sport.

Ok, I am reading you're debate and so we are on the same page, and because I didn't see it and don't have a foggy clue as to what you are talking about, what was Tiger Wood's comment that got you all so up in arms?

Golf is a sport (in the loosest definition).

He was asked which team he was supporting in the Stanley Cup finals.. to which he laughed and commented to the effect that he didn't think people watched hockey any more.

Golf is as much a sport as any other sport. And I like both golf and ice hockey- but I think it's fair to see ice hockey's popularity is probably greater in countries other than the USA. (Canada, for instance.) Though I'm sure there's loyal NHL fans in the US, too. Not sure why Tiger Wooods would be getting questions about his picks for the Stanley Cup to begin with, but anyway- maybe it was an honest comment and he didn't think about it upsetting hockey fans- I don't know. It probably wasn't a real smart thing to say.
Oh well- kudos to the Detroit Red Wings- they're certainly a good team, though I must admit I was pulling more for the Pittsburgh Penguins, if I pull for anyone in ice hockey. Maybe next year.
But not being a really big follower of ice hockey in any case- I'm ready for the next sports finals going on- basketball-the NBA Finals! Go Celtics!

I always thought hockey was cool when I watched Mac, but then I married a huge hockey fan. Now I split Coyotes season tickets with my friend and her husband.
We live in Phoenix and have great seats-thanks to my friend.
The first game after Gretsky took over, they had a raffle for his autographed jersey. My friend won it. I'm at her house every other day and I still look at it in amazement every time!!!
I am so *oink*ed that Detroit won the cup this year!! Hate them, hate them!!! Would have liked to see the Penguins win it. Just like always, the team with the most expensive players, wins.
My husband loves that I love hockey; he is always bragging to his friends that I know more about hockey than they do. Our kids will play hockey for sure!! A new ice rink just went up across the street!!
One thing that *oink*es me off about Gretsky; he's got all young un's on the Coyotes; seriously, only one player over 30. That's cool, but the winning teams always have more veteran players. Don't know why he can't see that; over half of Detroit's team is older. Oh well. I'm still a Coyotes fan, but just a little jaded at how Gretsky has messed up our team. Before he came, we were in the playoffs several times. Now I can't remember the last time we made it to the playoffs.

Maybe winning the Stanley Cup isn't so much his priority as correctly training the next generation of players so they can become cup winners.

I'm more of a NY Rangers fan myself. I started watching live hockey games the year the Rangers won the cup. I got totally tied up in the whole curse of the rangers deal and I think they really where on fire that year.

Living in a different country means I can only really follow it on satellite TV, which I no longer have, so consequently I'm pretty out of touch with the game these days and some of my favorite players from era, such as Mike Richter, have not retired.

Yeah, I'm not too thrilled that Detroit won, either, being in Colorado and being an Avalanche fan.

So happy that the Red Wings won. Been a fan for god knows how long.
