Welcome to chapter 10 of the story. This chapter was originally the first chapter in the other version. But we all know why I changed it. With some editing and continued writing this is the result. Enjoy!
P.S. I know it was actually the Soviet Union who got into Berlin first but what the hell?
(We fade in with the Ironclad track from the Sahara score which grows intenser)
Chapter 10
Battle of Berlin
Germany, Berlin
April 30 1945
NightA swastika flag was moving softly in the nightly wind against the Reichstag building where Adolf Hitler was. I could see him through my binoculars. The small man was standing on the roof looking down to his Third Reich being destroyed by the Allied troops. Berlin, once powerful and sovereign, now on fire by the Russian and American artillery. Russia attacked from the East and America from the West. Explosions and gunfire were everywhere. The sound of death echoed through the streets of Berlin. Four explosions in a row were heard from grenades. Another explosion came very close to the Reichstag, for his own safety, he went back inside. The Allied troops marched through the capital of Germany determined to take the Third Reich down. The Allies rescued most of Europe since D-day in 1944. Belgium, France, the UK and the Netherlands were freed from the Nazi’s during that year thanks to the cooperation between the UK and the USA. The Nazi’s were pushed back since then and now it was Berlin’s turn. Someone has to clean the mess up, right? (The music grows wilder)
Distant explosions where heard and lights of gunfire were seen. BANG!!!! A cannonball was send through the air by a tank several blocks away from our boys. The ball went through a window of a shop that already was partially destroyed. The cannonball exploded there taking the whole building down at once. Soldiers in uniforms and helmets ducked away when the building came down. Another explosion and several more followed. The Allied troops fired their submachine guns to houses which became now hiding places of the Nazi’s. In all of Berlin there was a rain of bombs coming down and also skydivers from the Allies. Those who ended coming down in the bombing and exploded had a very short military career. The Allies kept working their way into Berlin. One of those companies was the Stargate Company under leading of Colonel Jack O’ Neill. A man about halfway in his fifties, who’d seen everything. The sinking of the Titanic, the first World War, D-day. He was raised mostly by his father who fought in the Civil War. So being a soldier ran in the family. He kicked it from normal soldier to colonel and if possible he’ll try to become a general, in case he survives this war. The most destructible war this world has ever seen. He had a bunch of soldiers with him. Most of them were still very young and a few older ones. This including myself. I was born in 1918 during the last year of the Great War. At first it was difficult for me to use guns because of tragic incident in the late 20’s. When O’ Neill got himself into it, I changed my mind. I knew that if I would have gone to the war, I would never be the same man again. Despite everything I stood for, I had to give it all up. I always liked to save the world one day. The world was a too important place to be destroyed. So before America got sucked in the war by Japan, I went to the military school. But not without my friends, Jack Dalton, Jesse, Neill and Chuck. Without them, I probably never survived the training at West Point. Though I never was able to finish it and I just got thrown in the war. But I owe my friends a lot and vice-versa. That mostly goes for Jack Dalton. He usually got me into a lot of trouble but since they went to the Point that was all over. Jack Dalton got in the battlefield while flying over enemy territory to deliver some goodies for the American Army. His plane got shot out of the sky. He escaped barely from that one with his parachute. Jesse, Neill and Chuck were always along my side since their training. They weren’t send to different infantries, just like my other friends, Andrew, Tommy and Charles. This all thanks to General George Hammond, General Peter Thornton and O’ Neill himself of course. He said they were worth it.. He also gave me the pleasure because each time he looked at me, O’ Neill saw his younger self from the past. I remind him a lot of the days he fought in the first World War. We looked like each other but then with almost a thirty year age difference. It was amazing and not horrible as this war. We came in front of a whole line of Nazi’s. Gunfire was heard, everybody split up for a moment as the gunfight continued. Behind the Nazi’s there was big tank come closer. The tank fired and grenades were thrown to the soldiers.
‘Everybody heads down!!!’ O’ Neill screamed.
The explosions were tremendous and very loud. It caused an intense ringing in our ears. O’ Neill was on his own hiding behind a 1940’s model Beetle. He looked everywhere to see where his men were. Jesse, Chuck and Neill were hiding in a ruin of an old house where a wall was blown off. Jack and me where hiding behind another car, that was turned on his side. Just like Andrew, Tommy, Charles and Murdoc. Another explosion went through the street. Jesse, Chuck and Neill were firing their weapons at the Nazi’s. O’ Neill got up and tried to run toward the trio in the house. On the moment he started to run for them the tank’s cannon fired again. I saw that happening and warned O’ Neill for the coming danger.
‘O’ Neill!!!’
O’ Neill got distracted for a split second, he saw me pointing to a towards him coming fireball. O’ Neill saw it just on time and ran back to the car. When he set his first step the cannonball exploded only a few feet from behind. (The music disappears here shortly) Then it seemed like everything turned into slow-motion an intense ringing went through his ears. His vision got blurry and his legs seemed to become very heavy when he ran and besides the ringing all the noise was gone. The slow-motion seemed to last forever but then swoosh. (The music comes back and continues) The noise came back, his vision got set back again and everything became back the way they were.
‘Neill!!! Neill!!!’ he screamed.
‘What?! What?!’
Neill tried to hear what O’ Neill wanted to say to him.
‘The rocket launcher!!! Use it!!! Neill!!!’
‘What?! I can’t hear you!!!’
‘The rocket launcher, Neill!!!’
For a brief moment the firing stopped for reloading and O’ Neills message finally got through.
‘The rocket launcher!!!’
Neill acknowledged the order as he grabbed the rocket launcher from his gear. He loaded the launcher and fired a rocket to the tank. The tank blew up and the power of explosion even lifted up the back of the road for a moment, with the ones inside toasted.
‘Direct hit!!’ Chuck cheered.
The Nazi’s in front of the tanks where blown away or to the ground.
Jack and me got up from behind the car hideout.
‘Not the way, you would’ve done it, huh, Mac?’ Jack said.
‘These are things you have to deal with when you’re at war. Things change.’
‘You’ve changed too, Mac.’
‘Everything’s changed, Jack. You, me, the world. When this is over nothing will ever be the same again,’ I said bitter. ‘Let’s go.’
We ran closer to O’ Neill.
‘Are you alright, sir?’ I asked.
‘Yeah, I’m alright. I’m used to. Go to the others, quickly. I’ll cover ya.’
‘Yes, sir.’
We ran back to Jesse, Chuck and Neill, when O’ Neill started firing at more coming Nazi’s.
‘Run!! Go!!’ O’ Neill barked. (The music speeds up again)
He looked to his right to see if we were safe. So we were.
‘Alright, come on!!’ MacGyver yelled.
O’ Neill kept firing to the Nazi’s. He got up from behind his hiding place and tried to get to the others in the ruin. Then a grenade was launched through the air. It blew up on the car, because of the power of the explosion, the car flew in the air and somersaulted there before coming down again, to explode once more. Because of the explosion O’ Neill was blown backwards several feet. Andrew and the others inside the ruin started to fire their weapons to cover the colonel. O’Neill rolled over to the side of the ruin and crawled his way to the men.
‘Can’t believe this,’ he said.
He grabbed a grenade, he took out the pin with his teeth and threw the grenade to the Nazi’s. The Nazi’s cursed in German as they tried to get away. Then the explosion followed. Their screaming echoed through the street when they were blown away. (The music slows down again and then fades away)
‘Nicely thrown,’ Jesse said.
‘Yeah thanks,’ O’ Neill said. ‘Come on, keep moving,’ he said.
‘Shouldn’t we break or something?’ Jack Dalton said.
‘He’s right, sir,’ MacGyver said. ‘We’ve been moving for the past six hours now in heavy shooting and fighting.’
‘What?’
‘We’re tired, sir,’ Neill said.
‘I know that, men. But we have to keep moving. It’s almost half passed three. We’ve got less then four hours left to get to our goal. We can’t rest. If we keep moving now, we’ll rest within the hour. It depends on how far we’ve proceeded. Now, keep moving.’
I believed him and we moved on.
‘Come on!’
We came in area where there was less fighting, but it didn’t make it safe. The war was still close by and the Nazis where hiding in the houses once of rightful owners, now of a collapsing country.
Wandering through the streets we came by a big square.
‘Alright, we have to cross this square to get to the other side,’ he said.
‘What’s on the other side?’ Chuck asked.
‘The rest of the American army I hope.’
‘I don’t trust it, sir,’I said. ‘It’s way too quite here. There’s war behind us, in front of us and at our sides. But it can’t be that this square is fully empty. This must be an ambush.’
‘There’s only one way to find out and that is to run!!!’
(The track Hold Tight from Sahara kicks in here)
Our men ran over the square as fast as they could, but I was right, it was an ambush. From the moment they started running, the sound of other tanks were heard as they drove on the square. Gunfire went through the square, cannonballs where fired and grenades were thrown at them by the Nazis.
‘Run and fire!!!’ O’ Neill ordered.
Even though I hated it till in the deepest of his heart and soul, I also fired. Then two planes came down firing and flew very low over their heads. Their screaming went lost in all the noise. The planes circled around and did their maneuver a second time. Another salvo was fired from the Nazis from the ground. They kept running through the bullet rain. By the time they reached halfway the square the bullets began to hit their targets. O’ Neill got hit in his leg, but the bullet only grazed him. Still he fell to the ground. Chuck got one in the arm.
‘Keep running!’ O’ Neill said and killed two more Nazi’s.
Jesse and Neill ran back to their hurt friend as they tried to stay away from the bullets. Jack and I were right on their tails, firing to the enemy lines. O’ Neill was limping behind them.
‘Sir?’ I said when he saw O’ Neill limping to him.
‘It’s alright, son. Keep going.’
I slowed down a little to wait for the colonel.
‘Don’t wait for me!! Go!!’
Then there was suddenly gunfire from where they were going to.
‘Look!!’
From the houses across the square there seemed to be friendly fire coming. The Nazis around the ten running men were shot the bits and the tanks were disabled by grenades. I got to O’ Neill.
‘Come on, sir. We have to get you outta here.’ (The music slows down again)
We ran to the houses were the firing came from. Suddenly one of the doors went open. Neill was standing the closest to the door and took his Beretta out. When the person got out of the door, he grabbed the person around the neck with one arm and pushed the gun at the temple. A scream was heard. (Then the music fades away here) Neill noticed the person was a blonde woman in a nurse outfit.
‘Hold it,’ O’ Neill said. ‘It’s ok. This is nurse Carter.’
‘Sorry!’ Neill said and holstered his gun away.
‘Come in, quickly,’ Carter said.
The ten men went inside the house.
‘Is this place secure?’ O’ Neill asked.
‘Uh, yeah,’ Carter answered. ‘This part of the street is mainly in US hands.’
‘Alright guys, guess we can use the rest now. But no longer then one hour.’
‘Sir, you’re wounded and so is…,’ she looked at Chuck to find out his name.
‘Chuck.’
‘You have the rest longer.’
‘We’re so close in winning the war.’
‘Sir, recovering that wound is more important now than winning this damn war,’ Carter said with a raising tone.
O’ Neill looked at his men. ‘Alright. We’ll stay, but we’ll leave at oh-six-hundred hours. We have our orders.’
‘That’s fine. Come here. Show me that leg of yours.’
‘Chuck, you holding up?’ I asked.
‘It’s just my arm, Mac. I think I’ll live. The bullet went out on the other side.’
‘That’s good. You guys alright?’ I asked now to Neill and Jesse.
‘We’re alright,’ Neill said.
‘Andrew? What about you, guys?’
‘We’re A-OK, all three of us,’ Andrew answered.
‘Alright. Murdoc?’
‘Bugger off!’ he hissed and went to sit in the farthest corner of the room.
I ignored him. ‘Jack?’
‘What?’ O’ Neill said whom thought I was referring to him.
‘Sorry, sir. I was talking to Dalton.’
‘Oh, right. With two Jacks in the team, it can get confusing sometimes.’
O’ Neill looked back at nurse Carter to see what she was doing.
‘So, Jack, you alright?’
‘It’s tough out there,’ Jack said who was leaning with his hands against the table.
‘I know, Jack. It’s been hard since we took the training. But we have to hold on. We’re so close to winning. I don’t take it’s going to last much longer. Germany will capitulate. We overpowered them. Hitler made mistakes and it costs him his Third Reich.’
‘You damn right about that,’ O’ Neill said who was following the conversation. ‘He was already losing since Stalingrad.’
‘Hold still,’ Carter said when she was treating his wound with alcohol. The alcohol stung O’ Neill but he couldn’t care less about it.
‘It’s probably not a good time to ask this,’ Jesse said, ‘but what are we going to do when this is all over?’
‘Going home, back to Minnesota,’ I answered. ‘That’s at least what I wanna do.’
‘Do you miss, Kate?’ Jack asked.
I looked at him for a moment and then reached for my pocket. I took out an old black and white picture where a nice good looking young woman was on. I looked at the picture and suddenly I felt very depressed.
‘Yeah, I miss her, Jack. I miss her so much that it hurts,’ I said while fighting back my tears. I let the picture go around. ‘Well, most of you saw her once before.’
‘Hey, that’s a pretty girl,’ O’ Neill said.
‘She looks nice,’ Carter said.
‘Yeah,’ I said reaching out for the picture.
O’ Neill gave it back to him.
‘She, um… she was sick before we left for Normandy. I haven’t heard from her or anybody since we left. No letters, no nothing.’
‘What about your father?’ Jack asked.
‘Neither. The last time I saw my father was in London before we left to Normandy. I know, it’s not even a year ago but it’s too painful not hearing from your family.’
‘London was pretty much freed from the Nazi’s when we came there. I think your father is going to be alright,’ O’ Neill said.
‘Let us hope so.’
‘How did you actually got involved in this?’
‘The same way as you guys did, because of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.’
‘I know that. What made you decide to become a soldier?’
‘This war for one thing and I just can’t have it that most of mankind get exterminated because of one tiny little man who thinks he can establish an Aryan Nation and rule the world. I followed Hitler’s doings when I was a teen. I read Mein Kampf and I always knew he was bad news. That got worse when he gained power in 1933 and that turned into a catastrophe when he invaded Poland. This man changed the world. It can never become the world from before the war. He came so close with his bonds; Italy, Russia, Japan. Two of them turned against him. The countries he invaded, Poland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, England, Egypt and the rest of almost entire North Africa suffered too many losses. Anyway since this war was far away from our home there was nothing we could do until that faithful day Japan struck Pearl Harbor. That’s when I decided I wanted to become a soldier.’
‘What did your family think of this?’
‘I’m an only child. My father didn’t think it was a bad idea, my mother however… I mean what were your parents thinking? Most of our dad’s fought in the Great War. War is hell, no doubt. He told me terrible stories about what he went through. I knew if I ever got mixed up in one, I would need all that I can get to survive.’
‘What about Kate?’ Jack wanted to know.
‘Kate? She was so proud.’
‘Where did you meet her?’
‘In Minnesota, 1940, before we left to West Point. Haven’t seen her in five years. It was a bad timing to fall in love. But what we had for as far as it lasted was special.’
‘No doubt,’ Carter said while finishing up O’ Neill and going further to treat Chuck. ‘How much longer do you think this war will last?’
‘I’d say one more fight and than it’s over.’
‘Don’t count on it,’ O’ Neill said. ‘It’s not because we take down the war machine, that the war is over everywhere in the world. There’s still a long way to go.’
‘I know that, sir. But each day that passes is a day closer to home. Once I’m home, I like to become a farmer like my grandpa. You know, working on the fields.’
‘Why?’ O’ Neill asked. ‘With your escaping skills, you’d be a great asset for the army.’
‘No thanks, colonel. I’ve seen enough blood and violence and what for? Ultimate power. Mankind isn’t made for that sort of power. Everyone who had power once, true world power has died. Julius Caesar got betrayed by his own senate, Napoleon lost the battle of Waterloo and Hitler made an awful mistake against the Soviet Union. And the Allies can always come to clean up the mess. Well, next time they can come and clean up without me. No more war for me.’
‘You got a point there, MacGyver,’ Neill said. ‘I’m thinking to become a cop one day.’
‘A cop? What makes you think that?’ Jesse asked.
‘Oh, I don’t know. It’s not the same as the army but it’s something that has authority.’
‘That’s true.’
‘What about you, Jesse?’ I asked.
‘Oh, I don’t know. We’ll see, I guess.’
‘And you, Chuck?’
‘I kinda like this military equipment,’ he said. ‘The guns, the rifles, the grenades. I’m thinking about opening a gun store.’
‘A gun store?’ I asked.
‘Yeah, selling military equipment.’
‘How can you even consider about selling these things?’ I asked.
‘As a souvenir. To hang above fireplaces, why not?’
‘Like hunting rifles?’
‘Yeah.’
‘Hunting on animals is as bad as being at war. I don’t approve this, Chuck, but I don’t want to judge you over your ideas. If this is what you want, it’s all up to you.’
‘Thanks, Mac!’
An hour or so passed when everybody dozed off. Nurse Carter was awake, just as I was. There was very little light in the room and the fireplace was burning.
‘Here,’ she said handing me a cup of coffee.
‘Thanks,’ I said.
‘Are you alright?’ she asked while sitting down.
‘I’m fine,’ I answered while staring at the dancing flames.
There was an intense silence and when I took my attention of the flames, I noticed she was staring at me.
‘What are you looking at?’
‘I talked with O’ Neill about you.’
‘Did he say anything good?’
‘A lot actually. About how you always pull through on your assignments. I was just wondering, how do you do that?’
‘Peoples should rely more on their minds than on blazing guns. I hope when this war is over peoples start doing so.’
‘So you use your mind instead?’
‘Yeah. Sometimes the most logical solutions are right in front of you. Peoples often don’t see it because they’re too busy with themselves.’
‘Can you give me an example?’
‘Alright. Almost two years ago I rescued an American soldier at the Austrian-Hungarian border. I got caught and we were tied to chairs in the same room. I used the water out of canteen bottle to get our ropes loose. Than we used a truck to get out of there.’
‘That easy, huh?’
‘Nothing is ever easy but it was the most logical solution at the time.’
‘And what if the canteen wasn’t there or empty?’
‘Than I would’ve come up with something else. Plan B.’
‘What was plan B?’
‘I don’t know. Plan A worked.’
She smiled.
‘O’ Neill told me the two of you had spent some time in prison camp.’
‘It was a concentration camp in Poland and it was hell on earth.’
‘Really? What happened?’ (The track You Won't Break from Lock Up starts playing)
‘An assignment went haywire ending in our capturing. We were put on a train to the camp and it took two days to get there. There we were subjected to humiliating bodily examinations and medical experiments.’
‘Medical experiments?’ she wondered.
‘Yeah, I’m trying to forget it but there’s no way.’
‘What have they done to you?’
‘They um… they tried to make me Aryan.’
‘What?’
‘They wanted to make me part of their nation they were making. They sprayed blue chemicals in my eyes in order to make them blue. But the experiment has failed. Only my eye white became blue and not my irises.’
‘And you didn’t became blind? Who knows what the chemicals were made of.’
I lifted up my shoulders.
‘The only consequence I discovered was that I can see better than before. So I think doctor Mengele was indeed on the right track.’
‘Mengele? Josef Mengele?’
‘Yeah, you know him?’
‘I’ve heard of him. Angel of Death, right?’ she asked while sipping her coffee.
‘Yeah, he’s a lunatic just like Hitler. His experiments are like the sickest and most inhumane things I have ever seen in my life. The results are simply horrifying. And what for?’
‘Power. Greed.’
‘Insanity. The purification of the world. To create a metropolis or an utopia with one big world government and one nation.’
‘That’s what Hitler wants.’
‘That is just insane.’
‘Exactly.’
‘So how did you escape the death camp?’
‘They were going to gas us. Probably they wanted to gas me because their experiment failed. So they put us in a separate gas chamber to test it. O’ Neill, a man named Sam Bolinski, who we owe a lot by the way and myself were placed in a gas chamber. We escaped by leading the gas to the outside of the door and blowing it open.’
‘That was smart.’
‘Yeah, we snuck out and escaped by crawling underneath the barbwire. Except for Sam, he got recaptured and we haven’t seen or heard him since. From there on it was a run into freedom after we got rid of our pursuers.’
‘Wow!’
‘The past four years it’s been going in and out of hell each time. There’s nothing “wow” to it. There’s no glory to war, Carter.’
‘I know. I want it to be over as much as you do, MacGyver.’
‘Yeah.’
‘Do you think it can all be over tomorrow?’
‘Tomorrow, we should reach the Reichstag building. If we take that in, it should be over. Than we have the heart of the war machine in our hands.’
‘So tomorrow everything will be over?’
‘Can’t promise that but if we take in the Reichstag building, we might be able to force Nazi-Germany in capitulation and demand their surrender. But that doesn’t mean the war will be fully over. The three pact Hitler made with Italy and Japan is still on. Germany might be defeated and we have Italy on our side now, Japan still continues his military conquest. I think if we can put Japan to a hold, the war might be completely over.’
‘There’s still a lot to do in this war, huh?’
‘Yeah. So close to victory but all so far from over.’
I groaned when I rubbed over my face.
‘You’re tired, aren’t you?’ she asked.
‘Yes, I am.’
‘You better get some sleep.’
‘That’s what I had in mind. We leave at oh-six-hundred hours.’
I finished my coffee and went to look for a sleeping place.
‘Night, Carter.’
‘Night.’
(The music continues and than fades away)
Three and a half hours later O’ Neill woke me up.
‘Hey, come on. Time to go.’
‘Yeah, yeah!’ I grunted.
Getting up that morning was almost as tough as getting up at the concentration camp. We had to get ready within five minutes to carry on to the Reichstag building. I looked outside the skies were grey as they have been for the past months or so. It took me about four minutes to get ready since I slept with almost all my clothes still on. I was the first one who was ready, than I joined O’ Neill who was waiting by the window next to door.
‘So, what do you think?’ I asked.
‘That it will be over in a few hours.’
‘Sounds optimistic.’
‘We can’t afford to lose now. I don’t think we need another Battle of the Bulge.’
‘That’s right, sir.’
‘Let’s finish them, once and for all.’
‘How’s your leg?’
‘It’s still on and it works.’
‘Come on, everybody,’ O’ Neill said aloud.
‘What about nurse Carter?’ Jack asked.
‘I’ll be fine, Jack,’ she answered. ‘The Allied troops are on the way.’
‘Let’s move it,’ O’ Neill ordered. (The tracks Beauty Killed The Beast part I-V from King Kong starts playing here)
He opened the door and we went outside. The morning air was cool on our faces and it helped waking us up and that had to do it since we didn’t have any breakfast.
It was quiet in the streets while we wandered through destroyed Berlin. It’s like everyone left the battlefield behind or they were still a sleep in the ruins of the houses. The Reichstag building came closer and close and boomed up in the distance. While going down the street others of our troops appeared with their rifles ready. Tanks and jeeps and trucks appeared and above Allied planes flew over in their proper formations.
‘It’s time,’ O’ Neill said.
From behind the Reichstag building Nazi airplanes appeared.
‘I guess the Luftwaffe is still operational,’ I said.
‘Must be really their final attack wave,’ O’ Neill replied.
Now German tanks, trucks and jeeps appeared as well. This was the last defense line of the once great Third Reich of Nazi-Germany.
One of the tanks opened fire and the battle begun. The cannonball flew through the air hitting a house. Than the Luftwaffe began an aerial battle with the Allied planes.
‘Alright, everybody spread out!’ O’ Neill barked.
(Part II takes over)
Our company spread out and began working on their own. I saw the others taking on the tanks and checking out the houses around the Reichstag building.
‘MacGyver, come on, let’s go!’ O’ Neill said and pulled me with him.
We jumped over a pile of debris. O’ Neill took a grenade and threw it to some Nazis on the street. I covered my head in the wait of the explosion. The explosion hit target.
‘What are you orders, sir?’ I asked.
‘Just a second,’ he said while loading his handgun.
He cocked the barrel got up and shot two more Nazis down.
‘Alright,’ he said and took of his backpack and took the American flag out of it. ‘Mac, I want you to take this flag and run with it to the Reichstag building.’
‘What?’
‘Take the flag and run with it to the Reichstag building. If you take down their flag on top of the roof and replace it with ours, we own this land. Than we win.’
‘That’s right.’
‘Yeah and I’ll cover you. Do you think you can manage this?’
‘Absolutely sir.’
‘Ready?’
‘Let’s go.’
We both got up from behind our pile of debris and I started to run for the Reichstag building. O’ Neill was clearly covering my tail because everybody died who was about to get in my way. I just kept running forward. But at one moment, I did look behind me and saw O’ Neill getting beaten to the ground by three Nazis. They were kicking him but than he fought back like a ferocious beast and beat the crap out of them. He shot one in the foot, kicked the other one backwards and throw the third one over his back. I saw he was alright but bloodied.
‘Keep running!’ he said and joined Jack and Neill in taking down a tank. (Part III kicks in)
I continued my run to the Reichstag building. By entering the building I noticed it was deserted as if a tornado or something blew through. I ran to the nearest staircase and worked my up to the roof. The roof where I saw Adolf Hitler standing only a few hours ago. I nearly reached the third floor when I heard an echoing voice through the empty building.
‘MacGyver!!!’
I stopped in an instant. Now what?
‘Murdoc?!’
‘I’m coming to get you!’
Damn it! Why now? I had no time to waste, we were so close in winning the battle. Everything was depending on me now. I had no choice but to go on. So I continued my way up to the roof. I entered the roof and had a good look on what was going on down there. I saw Jesse fighting there against two Nazis. But where was O’ Neill?
Above me the Luftwaffe began to suffer terribly in their losses. Our airplanes was winning airspace. They fired their machineguns on the Luftwaffe. A wing of a Nazi airplane burst out in flames. The pilot inside the plane lost the control over the aircraft. The airplane exploded when it hit the ground. When the first attack wave pushed the Luftwaffe back and destroying it for once and for all a second wave of Allied aircraft flew over and bombing everything in sight. Than for a moment it seemed like everything stopped. The battling seemed over. The Nazis either fled themselves or continued to fight a lost fight.
Enough time wasted and I took of the swastika flag of the building and replaced by the American flag. I dropped the swastika flag of the building and below a loud and intense applause and cheering erupted. Berlin an all of Germany has become American soil now.
It was over! The heart of the war machine has stopped beating.
The Third Reich is gone! After twelve years of power Nazi-Germany no longer exists. The world has changed!
‘We did it!’ I yelled to below. (The music stops here for a moment)
‘Alright, MacGyver. Game over!’ I heard someone say when I heard a gun click.
‘Murdoc!’
‘That’s right!’
‘Alright, Murdoc. Why? What have I done to you, that you want to kill me so bad?’
‘I just don’t like you.’
‘You never liked me, not even when we were in West Point and this while you don’t even know me, but hey, the feeling is very mutual.’
‘Oh, well, let’s just get this over with.’
‘Okay!’ (The track Bells Beach Fight from the movie Point Break starts playing here)
I didn’t had the intention of dying now so I grabbed his wrists and aimed the gun up. We began to struggle for the gun. I forced him to shoot the clip empty and than I forced him to aim the gun down. He didn’t want to let go, he rammed his elbow up my gut and hit me with a firm right sending me onto my back. With my foot I kicked the gun out of his hand. I got up rammed my fist in his gut and threw him against the ground. He rolled towards the gun but unfortunately for him, he was too late because I kicked the gun out of his reach again and of the roof. Murdoc got up to one knee and rammed his elbow in my gut, with the back of his fist, he hit my nose and I tumbled backwards. Bounced back right up and swung a couple of lefts and rights across his face. Murdoc staggered backwards and shook his head in response to the blows. Clumsy he swung his fist again, I easily dodged and launched a devastating right in his face, knocking him and myself over. Slowly we got up but I could struck him again with another right. I got up first and was about to pull him up when he kicked me in the stomach. He launched a big right fist in my face. I felt back. Than he kicked me three times more. The third kick made me roll over. Murdoc took a grenade and pulled the pin out.
‘Goodbye, MacGyver.’
From behind me I heard sudden gunshots hitting their targets. I covered my head in my arms and when I looked up I saw bullet holes in Murdoc’s chest. He stumbled backwards and had a shocked look in his eyes. He lost his balance and fell of the edge of the roof.
‘MACGYVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’
The grenade exploded when he hit the ground shredding his body apart. I looked up behind me and saw O’ Neill standing with his gun aiming. (The music fades away here)
‘Are you alright?’ he asked.
‘Uh, yeah,’ I answered.
‘I saw everything happening from down there so I came to your aid.’
‘I appreciate it but you just killed one of your own men.’
‘Yeah, I’m probably going to get court martial for it if it leaks out. I don’t care, I didn’t like the son of a b*tch, anyway.’
‘I know what you mean. What’s the status down there?’
‘Terrible! We have to go back down there. Some of the Nazis refuse to retreat.’
‘Let’s go than.’ (Part IV and V from Beauty Killed The Beast kicks in)
We went back to ground level. The streets were covered with the dead. I saw some of the others hiding against the wall of house. Jesse, Chuck, Tommy, Andrew and Charles were there about to enter the house.
‘Where’s Jack and Neill?’ I asked.
My eyes scanned down the area. Behind a pile of debris I saw Jack and Neill waving. Neill was bleeding, Jack seemed alright.
‘There they are,’ O’ Neill said.
‘I can see that.’
We all went closer to the house and O’ Neill acknowledged to Jesse as permission to enter. The house seemed deserted. Slowly we went in. Jesse went to check upstairs along with Andrew. When we entered the living room suddenly from behind the couch a bunch of Nazis appeared shooting. In a fraction of the moment Chuck’s body got sifted with bullets. Outraged O’ Neill and Neill fired their guns on the Nazis. Jack ducked for cover just as Tommy and Charles did. I tried to get Chuck in safety. (The music turns more dramatic)
‘Oh, my God,’ Chucked panicked and spat blood out of his mouth. ‘Mac! Mac!’
‘I’m right here, Chuck,’ I said and took his hand.
‘I think… I won’t… begin… that military shop now, huh?’
‘God, Chuck.’
Tears welled up in my eyes.
‘Do me… a favor, Mac.’
‘Ask anything.’
‘Tell my parents… tell them… I love them!’
That moment he passed away. Neill hasted himself to Chuck.
‘Chuck! Chuck!’ he cried.
‘He’s gone, Neill,’ I said.
Neill became outrageous.
‘No, no, no!’
‘I’m sorry.’
Than he exploded. The other Nazis they shot were either dead or hurt. One of them was still alive though. Neill stamped up to him and kicked him in anger.
‘You f*cking Nazi!’ he screamed and kicked the living sh*t out of him.
The Nazi screamed in pain and one moment later he grabbed Neill’s ankle and bit him. Neill screamed in his turn and yanked himself loose. He hit him back with a powerful right, hard enough to break his jawbone in one single punch. With his handgun he fired three bullets from up real close, killing the Nazi. A moment of silence followed. The silence was broken due to the sound of gunfire and a scream of help from upstairs.
‘HELP! MacGyver!’
‘That’s, Jesse,’ Neill said.
Without hesitation or wasting another moment I jumped up and went upstairs. I saw Andrew entering a room where a lot of noise came out of. A gushing sound was heard and a exclaiming of pain.
‘Argh!’
Andrew came back outside, walking backwards. He held his hand against his chest. The blade of the knife between two of his fingers. He fell against the wall and died. I heard fighting in the room where he was, so I went to see. Jesse was fighting with two Nazis taller than him. He pushed one against the wall and rammed his knee in his gut. When the other one tried to attack him I jumped on his back. He tried to get me of off him but of course I wouldn’t let go. He ran into walls and other furniture to get me off. With a powerful elbow blow I almost had to let go of him. I got his head into a headlock what would’ve made it easy for me to break his neck, but I tried to keep him away from Jesse. Jesse was swapping punches on the taller Nazi. When the Nazi hit the ground he wanted to help me out but the one I was trying to hold on to kicked Jesse back. The other Nazi got up and kept Jesse in a stranglehold. While I was forcing my opponent down, I saw the other one taking out a knife.
‘Jesse! Knife!’
Jesse tried to hold off the knife as long as he could, but than the Nazi hit him in his stomach and cut his throat off. The blood splattered around.
‘JESSEEEEEEEE!’
The guy I was holding down hit me hard with his elbow in my gut and pulled me over his back. A moment of shock occurred when they were looking at Jesse’s dead body but than they were about to split. The Nazi kicked me once more and left the room.
‘Jesse!’
They left the room and again gunfire was heard. I heard two thudding bodies. Unfortunately it wasn’t them. Panicked and questioned they tried to find a way out and reentered the room. When they were about to get out of the room they received a punch of O’ Neill and Neill entering the room.
‘What happened?’ O’ Neill asked.
‘They killed Jesse!’
‘What?!’ Neill screamed.
‘Sons of b*tches!’ O’ Neill yelled.
Another fight erupted when the two Nazis tried in a last attempt to get away. Neill brutally picked up his opponent smashing him against a glass cupboard hitting his gut five times. He kneed him in his balls and hit him in his gut again. Almost dragging him along and than he threw him through the window. A blood curdling scream echoed through the streets.
‘You’re f*cking next,’ O’ Neill said and kicked his opponent who was on the floor than he also picked him up and threw him also through the window. When also he made a thud on the ground below there was silence. Completely astonished we looked at each other.
‘Tommy and Charles are dead too, Mac,’ Jack said. ‘It’s just the four of us now.’
I could only nod now. Two of my best friends died today and three of our company friends. There were nine of us. O’ Neill, Jack, Neill, Chuck, Jesse, Andrew, Tommy, Charles, Murdoc and me. Five soldiers, good soldiers died in the battle to win this war. Jack was right. Only four of us left. Only four.

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.
