In an attempt to restore some of the damage around here I also remade this poll. I even added up a few options to it.

Thank you MG! I voted for the Challenge. And my abbreviated reason why... laugh.gif For me, "dark" is when a character is brought to the edge of himself...I think the scenes in the Challenge...when he finds Booker and then puts his fist through the wall...that scene sticks with me because that outburst is so outside the character and i think it adds realness. The main one is when Mac's about to clock the guy with the gun, and then when the kid yells, and Mac looks in shock at the gun...I think that whole scenario stretched Mac almost to the breaking point. You're left wondering what he would have been capable of if he hadn't been stopped. That's dark. wink.gif

LOL...I won't even rehash all the eps like I did before!

I've been thinking about my own definition of 'dark' in regards to a tv episode. I know it when I see it, but putting my finger on defining it is another matter.

Until yesterday, I felt that no Murdoc ep belongs in the 'dark' category, which helps me with my definition. I felt that Murdoc eps weren't 'dark' because they have no real emotional repercussions. But I saw the extremely freaky ep 'Obssessed' yesterday (that opening scene! *shudders*) and was ecstatic to discover how much Murdoc has affected Mac psychologically. It has a very realistic resonance to a cartoonish madman.

So, I think that 'dark' to me means something very bad happening to the main character which has a strong emotional effect and causes him to act outside of his normal parameters to do something that doesn't necessarily fit in with his usual idea of what is moral, right, or just. This bad happening must also impact his world, changing it for the worse, even if things are righted in the end.

Therefore, The Challenge is definitely the darkest Mac ep by my definition--Booker's murder almost led Mac to brutally assaulting the killer AND his death had an impact on the Challenger's Club, which might not have survived Booker's death had Cynthia not been as strong as she was. The ending could very well have depicted the end of the CC and MacGyver being charged with attempted murder, taking out of a hard community two elements that were working hard to make positive changes.

My two cents CDN.

That's right! Murdoc just enters the house with an axe to simply kill MacGyver. That's the way it should've been done to get it over with. The fact MacGyver actually awakes on time and really sees him is very dark then in the end it was just a dream.
Was it the very first time you saw this episode?

1st time since it aired, so it's gotta be at least 14 years. biggrin.gif

I remembered a heck of a lot of it, but it was like I was seeing it for the first time.

The only ep I haven't seen is Mountain of Youth.

Which episodes were the darkest? Hmmm, let me think. . . I think it is like you say, the list is as follows,
"The Challenge" ( because when his friend Booker died - was killed . ), "The Negotiator" ( because when Deborah made him go blind. And they were together in that factory place. MacGyver was feeling around for things to get him away from Deborah and to put her out until the cops come to take her away. ),
"The Widowmaker" ( because he was dealing with the loss of a friend and no one not even Pete or Nikki was able to help him. Plus he was dealing with being chased by Murdoc which forced him to hurry up and get over the loss of Mike - his friend. ),
"Passages"( because we all thought MacGyver was a goner for sure. When he fell three storeys to the top of a car. He had made his peace and was going to stay with his folks until Harry talked some sense in to him to go back and help Pete ),
"Walking Dead" ( when Baron Samdi - please forgive the spelling of the name - blew the dust on him and made him into a zombie. Mama Lorraine told him to not move as that would only make things worse. But to rather take the herb that would help him recover. ),
"Strictly Business" ( when Murdoc used the bazooka to blow up the car MacGyver was driving. How he got away amazes me, no end. But I am so very glad he DID get away. And lived. And got his memory back ! ),
And one I thought of , just now, . . "Nightmares" ( when he had , sort of, amnesia. Because of the drug that was given to him. And it took him the whole time to remember what happened and to run away from the bad guys. Then he got the antidote and got better. Thank God !) word1.png
If I think of anymore, I shall have to come back, later.
Sincerely,
Kate Mackay

My vote is for The Challenge. Not only do we see Booker brutally murdered, we also see Mac *almost* give in to violence himself. That's what makes it dark, as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah... well, I should have been clearer. We didn't actually SEE the bad guys kill him, but you watch them beating on him, and then grab the noose... and you just KNOW what's coming next. I still get a knot in my stomach at that scene.

What about deadly dreams?

That had the whole psychotic undertone going on in it. Kinda like Silence of the Lambs.

You notice how the darker episodes are in the later seasons? from about season 5 onwards the story lines seem to be leaning more towards the heavy drama instead of the light action adventure.

Yeah the Dr Zito episodes are very dark.
Deadly Dreams
Lesson in Evil

Also listed: The Challenge
Walking Dead
Widowmaker
Obsessed
The Negoitiator

How about: Invisible Killer, Jerico Games, Humanity, Gunz and Boys, Tough Boys, the Assassin (the murder of the woman Lila in the beginning)? All have very dark elements in one place or another.

My vote is for Deadly Dreams or the Challenge: great eppys

I don't think having 1 or 2 dark elements makes the episode dark.

I think this topic is more aimed at which episode in it's entirety is darkest, rather than just having some elements of darkness.

I don't know why Ghostship, Killzone or Negotiator are on the list. What was dark about them?

Definition of "Dark":
foreboding, depressing, somberness.

Which episodes highlight these characteristics?

I'm thinking Deadly Dreams is probably one of the few episodes which had the continual undertone of darkness in it.. all the way through theres that underlaying feeling of a psychotic game being played.

I don't think The Challenge was dark until Bookers death. And I don't think it stayed dark after the death either. In fact I'm not sure I would even call that scene dark.. more emotionally charged maybe.

Yeah I agree about Deadly Dreams and I still say Lesson in Evil. Dr Zito is just a dark, dark character.

Challenge for me from Booker's death on was darker than usual, and you're right very very emotionally charged.

The Negotiator is on the list as Deborah works her deceit on Mac and kills the dog. I would place Kill Zone or Ghost Ship on the list.

I would say the top ten darkest episodes for me are (I love lists):
10. The Negotiator
9. The Widomaker (full of angst, pain and Mac's mood is dark)
8. Obsessed
7. Runners (another one I can't yet watch with my daughter, notice I said yet. She's so smart, eventually she'll ask, we are working our way through ones she hasn't seen)
6. The Assasin
5. Lesson in Evil (Interesting eppy)
4. Humanity
3. The Challenge
2. Walking Dead
1. Deadly Dreams :very dark throughout, very dark elements, serial killers, prostitution mentioned

#"s 1, 2 and 3 are there because they're so dark I can' watch them with my kids yet. How would I explain Dr. Zito? She likes Murdoc eppys (and Jack Dalton) the best.

You're walking around in the woods and you see a deserted freighter ship where at first sight something terrible has happened. MacGyver enters it looking to see what's on board. He doesn't know the creature is still on board. Everywhere he finds tracks like the bloody hand, the piece of hair... at night you can hear the sasquatch cry.

Kill Zone because of what it can do. It fell in the woods and killed immediately 900 animals. Than there was the leak with a temporary fix. It was able to mutate and it could be able eat through glass than it infested plant life and Sandra and her dog were exposed to it.

The Negotiator. Everything Deborah and Knapp did to get their marina. Clearly they didn't consider the consequences for ocean life and they were willing to go far to get it. They were willing to go over bodies. The truckdriver who disappeared, Deborah invading MacGyver's privacy while planting the bug, breaking-in in Nikki's appartment and killing her dog, the boat hit, cutting Mac off his friends. That's a whole lot for a 45-minute episode. What makes it dark? The fact that Deborah played a whole game of drawing Mac to a certain death.

I agree more or less. If it's one or two elements throughout the episode it's enough. Even if it's just the bad feeling that you know something big and terrible will happen and you don't know what happens next or how they deal with it. Or it could be constant bad weather.

Emotionally charged can be dark as well too, if you don't see any hope no more. And I say that raises the stakes.

Out of Ghost Ship, Kill Zone and the Negiator, the Negotiator was the darkest to me. Deborah, a professional killer. And I still am waiting for someone to answer for me: why if she was so competant, why didn't she remove the lynx coat before stabbing the dog to death? It was the thing the proves to pete and Nikki that Deborah was the killer!

What about Assasin isn't dark? The first scene we see Piedra about to stab Lila brutally and she dies in her sister's arms. The rest of the episode is about catching him and he kills how many more people : 4 agents and I'll assume the nun. Pretty dark.

There's a question: which episodes have the most deaths?

Because she probably didn't know that dog had one in his mouth. We don't know what happened behind that door. Presumably the dog had his teeth in her coat and she stabbed it in reaction. The dog dies, letting go of her coat and one hair stays behind between his teeth.

I don't keep the count on that. It's not the amount of deaths, that makes things dark. It's the whole atmosphere around it. The way they have been killed, what are the killers motives, what's the killers mental state.

Just like Rock said: Dark means foreboding, depression, somberness. I add to that creepiness, fear. But there is more to it like weather circumstances like lightning storms.

Best example of 'dark' in MacGyver is Trail To Doomsday. With exception of the beginning and the end there's no sunshine, he's alone in a to the US distant country (I just have to cross the North Sea), with no friends, no one he can trust, caught in a web of crime and a very stuck investigation.

QUOTE

The Assassin might have high amount of deaths since Piedra killed everybody who was supposed to guard them. But how many, I don't know.

I'm still trying to figure it out but the only episode I can come up with the most deaths upon till know is Phoenix Under Siege. Susan Murphy, Fred, the other guy she shot and herself. 4 victims in one episode. I think Lou lived to see another day. I think the amounts of deaths would rarely go over 2.

How many victims did Dr. Zito have before and after he met MacGyver?
9 victims got him arrested by Murphy, the guy Cross killed in the hospital on Zito's prompting, Cross killed Sweeney the detective and Murphy's partner, which you could blame on Zito, attempted to kill Murphy twice (one in each eppy), the guards from the hospital in the elevator in Lesson in Evil, attempted to kill his shrink, ok how many does that total, plus Cross's suicide which was also kind of Zito's doing.

Murdoc?

Deborah they never tell us.

Piedra: I counted 6 in one eppy. Plus 14 assassinations prior to that, and 2 attempts on Mac.

I'd say Zito has the record title. boxing.gif

Trail to Doomsday is very very dark from beginning to end. I hadn't considered it. Shame on me!! surprise.gif

QUOTE (MacGyverGod @ 23 July 2008 - 07:57 AM)
Because she probably didn't know that dog had one in his mouth. We don't know what happened behind that door. Presumably the dog had his teeth in her coat and she stabbed it in reaction. The dog dies, letting go of her coat and one hair stays behind between his teeth.

I am only saying that as a woman it makes more logical sense to take off the coat instead of risking getting the dog's blood on it. Pete said the dog died of multiple stab wounds and that lynx hair was in the dogs mouth. Now come on: as a professional she would want no traces right? She didn't think that Pete would run pathology test?

Trail to doomsday doesn't count, because it's not part of the TV series and many of our members here haven't seen it.

Liz, you need to go back and fix your quotes in this post

Well she is a negotiator, not a murderer.. maybe this was her first venture into dog-laughter.

Actually to be fair, her whole attempt at killing MacGyver at the end seemed pretty amateur, for a professional.

Which part of my quote would you like me to fix Rock?

QUOTE (Liz1976 @ 23 July 2008 - 03:54 AM)

I don't know why Ghostship, Killzone or Negotiator are on the list. What was dark about them?

The Negotiator. Everything Deborah and Knapp did to get their marina. Clearly they didn't consider the consequences for ocean life and they were willing to go far to get it. They were willing to go over bodies. The truckdriver who disappeared, Deborah invading MacGyver's privacy while planting the bug, breaking-in in Nikki's appartment and killing her dog, the boat hit, cutting Mac off his friends. That's a whole lot for a 45-minute episode. What makes it dark? The fact that Deborah played a whole game of drawing Mac to a certain death.
Definition of "Dark":
foreboding, depressing, somberness.
I count creepiness and fear with that as well.
How about: Invisible Killer, Jerico Games, Humanity, Gunz and Boys, Tough Boys, the Assassin (the murder of the woman Lila in the beginning)? All have very dark elements in one place or another.
All no's. Especially not in episodes involving teens. Most teens don't know what they are doing.
I don't think having 1 or 2 dark elements makes the episode dark.
I agree more or less. If it's one or two elements throughout the episode it's enough. Even if it's just the bad feeling that you know something big and terrible will happen and you don't know what happens next or how they deal with it. Or it could be constant bad weather.
I don't think The Challenge was dark until Bookers death. And I don't think it stayed dark after the death either. In fact I'm not sure I would even call that scene dark.. more emotionally charged maybe.

There's a question: which episodes have the most deaths?

the quotes.

Ok I'll bite. How do I do that? Because it wasn't on purpose.

Talk about another season three eppy, I am watching Kill Zone--the kid's idea. She picks the season and the disc, and I pick the appy. Then we switch. Watching Mac inspires me when write on the forum or on the story.
