In the later seasons it seems the writers stopped making story lines that were Mission or "Mac at work" storylines and made more , Mac is out living his life and has to save the day story lines. Lost Amadeus as an example springs to mind.

I'm a more mission fan then I am the latter, how about you?

Very much the latter. Birth Day and all. Maybe in part because of 90s Simpsons, idk.

I love the Things Happening Out of Nowhere In The City format. It's almost like Seinfeld without laconic observations. Except the very few times in earlier seasons when it's a spec script and Mac has always been friends with one time characters.

A lot of that is my own appeal as a city person.

I'm also a big fan of the community organizer episodes. They feel organic, it feels fresh on TV, and somehow both aspirational and relatable.

Still I love the international intrigue format almost as much. The Phoenix episodes later on are a bit more generic 80s-90s drama. That's not even bad but as time goes on they feel less distinguished.

Also Nikki as a character was a great catalyst for some outstanding urban episodes of season 3. They could have used quite a bit more of that.

I like both and any other episode format for that matter like the forest episodes.

Interesting observation and good one!

I have to say that I like both though considering that the first seasons hold more nostalgia for me, I probably prefer the mission ones. Also I find the episodes where there are not any "bad guy/s" interesting. Prime example being the Kill Zone.

I preferred the mission/assignment episodes myself.

Some of the "wrong place, right time" episodes were good, but I always liked the aspect of MacGyver being the "guy they called when there's no-one left to call." It feeds into the whole thing of how unique his skill set was, it also made the character extra special.

"One time we were on a camping trip. This bear ate all our food! I got all wimpy scared, but my grandpa, he said to me, 'Bud. . . we'll just go grazing.'"
