Astra flagged this one: in anticipation of Gatecon, various cast members of Stargate, including RDA, have put experiential items up for auction on www.charitybuzz.com. All auctions benefit the Waterkeeper Alliance. Top item: lunch with RDA. Other items: lunches with Amanda Tapping, Joe Flanigan, and Jewel Staite; or a kayak paddle signed by pretty much the entire cast of both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. As of this moment, the winning bids are as follows: The autographed kayak paddle: a mere $450 Lunch with: Jewel Staite -- $925 Joe Flanigan -- $3,250 Amanda Tapping -- $3,600 Richard Dean Anderson -- $10,000.These are actual bids, not reserve amounts. The auctions still have several days to run -- bidding closes on April 29 at 12:50 PM EDT -- unless there's last-minute bidding. Here's a nice wrinkle: these auctions cannot be won by the Last Person to Squeak In a Bid -- late bids will automatically extend the bid window until bidding has actually stopped (closing period is ten minutes). Also impressive: charitybuzz is waiving their fees and commissions on the auctions. The entire amount, presumably, goes to the Waterkeepers. Whew. So there's still time to set up a home equity loan, rob a bank, win the lottery, sell your children, etc.

~snort~ I hadn't thought of it that way. Seems the last time he agreed to auction off a lunch, it was along with Amanda Tapping, and it went for $30,000! Too bad my friend I'm going to Gatecon with remodeled her bathroom last fall - she could have used all that money on this instead LOLOL I'm buying the $2 Powerball lottery ticket today, instead of the regular old $1 as usual. With a special 10 multiplier this month, even $10,000 could turn into $100,000! Worth the extra buck LOL banlu ---> would love to watch him masticate
A hug from Mac seemed to cure almost anything ~sigh~

LOL - It's funny because it sounds like a 'bad' word We have so many synonyms in English because it's a Germanic language thet's been heavily influenced by the Romance languages, Especially Latin and French - the latter thanks to William the Conquerer. My theory is that the 'four letter words" in English are considered so crude, because that's what the locals used, which the invading French nobles thought were beneath them. I'm thinking the resteraunt probably donates the meal, since it's lined up before the auction started. banlu

Update on all the winning bids: The autographed kayak paddle: still a relative bargain at $750. Lunch with: Jewel Staite -- $3,500 Lunch for 2 people plus Jewel, anytime in the next year; includes tour of the Stargate Atlantis set. Joe Flanigan -- $16,500 Lunch for 2 people plus Joe, anytime in the next year; includes tour of the Stargate Atlantis set. Amanda Tapping -- $3,600 Lunch for 2 people plus Amanda, anytime in the next year; includes tour of the Sanctuary set. Richard Dean Anderson -- $15,000 -- 2 people plus Rick, to be held during the weekend of Gatecon. Lunch will be either on the set of Stargate Atlantis or at a "secret location" in Vancouver. Or maybe both. Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot? Joe Flanigan's outdrawing RDA? *scratches head* Betcha that won't last. And I'd be happy to watch him masticate, fulminate, or even prevaricate. Astra, there's a lovely saying about the English language: other languages merely borrow terms as needed. English sneaks up on other languages in dark alleys, smacks them over the head, and makes off with any word, term, or expression that isn't locked up or nailed down. It then takes the pieces apart and assembles new terms at whim, whether needed or not. Then our self-styled language experts settle in for another next generation of lamentation over the degradation of the language.
