I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.

Well, there were only 13 episodes made for Season 7 initially. (Apparently, "The Coltons" was shot during Season 6, but didn't air until Season 7.) They wanted to save "The Stringer" to air as the season finale, but that meant either they had to air a bunch of reruns for 4 months in 1992 or pre-empt MacGyver with other programming (which I think they did a bit of both- the SuperBowl took up some airing time)- Most shows have their season premiere in September or somewhere there in the fall and wrap up that season by April or May or so- and thus we have the summer reruns while shows get ready for new seasons to premiere the following fall. In our case, we actually got a bonus episode of MacGyver- the infamous "lost episode"- "The Mountain of Youth", which was really just part of the episodes filmed for the 7th. Season to fulfill the 13 episode contract, but it was put on the shelf and pulled out to air in the summer of 1992 after ABC saw how well the series finale did when it aired alongside the "Growing Pains" and "Who's The Boss?" series finales.

How did I miss this question for so long?

Anyway the answer is that they saved the finale for April when they did a special night of several series finales.
