All right, here's the story I promised that involves the scientist from Kill Zone. This story obviously takes place before her death, and I thought it would be interesting to explore her character a little more. I hope you enjoy it! smile.gif

Quarantine Part One
Rated: PG

“Damn it, Sandra, I don’t care what you think! I will have security escort you from the building if necessary, but you’re not getting anywhere near that laboratory!” Pete shouted, grabbing Dr. Sandra Milhouse by the arm to stop her determined, brisk march down the corridor, trying to be firm and restrain and detain her without hurting her.

It proved to be a difficult task as she violently wrenched herself free from his grasp, glaring at him fiercely with her intense, piercing, and intelligent eyes. Although she was still relatively young, considered by many in the scientific and academic community to be a brilliant prodigy, her tidy appearance and sharp facial features made her seem mature beyond her years, yet her bold arrogance and recklessness also at times made her seem like a spoiled, selfish child with no regard for the consequences of the dangerous, volatile substances she chose to experiment with as her playthings. She seemed to operate under the notion that she was God, that she alone could change the course of humanity through her creations. She was the most devoted worshiper of the cult of her brand of science, following its doctrines zealously.

“We have to stop them before they have a chance to destroy the organism,” she said vehemently. “We don’t even know what we have, here! It could lead to the breakthrough of something extraordinary, something that could change lives!”

Pete noticed an almost maternal, protective tone to her voice, as if she were defending one of her children. Perhaps she had substituted her work for offspring, her time spent consumed by it in the laboratory preventing her from having time to have any real children.

“Look, I know what we’ve got, here,” Pete said. “We’ve got a dangerous virus that is rapidly mutating into something new, and we may not be able to contain it much longer before it breaks the integrity of the lab’s seal and is released into the general population where it could become a full scale epidemic of which there is no cure!”

“Pete, would you cease the melodramatics? You’re overreacting, just like the Phoenix board! This entire procedure is unnecessary. We have the organism securely contained. There is no possibility for contamination.”

Sirens blared, followed by a dire warning from the computerized announcer’s voice.

“Attention…security breach in Sector Ten…”

“No possibility of contamination, huh? What do you call that? That’s the section of the lab where MacGyver and his team are preparing to destroy the organism!” Pete shouted over the alarms.

“It could mean anything!” Sandra shouted.

“Well, I’m not waiting,” Pete said, running down the corridor.

Sandra followed him, running down the narrow, winding corridors that snaked through the underground facility, fearing that her career, her purpose in life, indeed her entire reason for existence was at stake and in jeopardy. As they reached the sealed isolation chamber in the lab where MacGyver and the team assigned to him were supposed to destroy the harmful new pathogen partly of her design, they saw several men in white protective biohazard suits engaged in a struggle. Two of them appeared to be attempting to steal a vial of the substance while the other suited man fought with them, trying to maintain his grip on it and prevent them from taking it. Although indistinguishable from the thieves in his suit, Pete knew that the man battling to maintain control over the vial was MacGyver.

“They’re trying to steal the organism!” Pete said, feeling helpless as he watched, separated from them by thick glass paneling and sealing agents meant to contain any dangerous contagion.

“They won’t be successful,” Sandra said.

Moments later, the heavy stomps from the boots of security officers echoed down the corridors along with the screaming, shrill sirens. They were attired in full SWAT gear and carrying automatic weapons, knowing that they were in a sensitive, classified area and that the protection of it was vital to national security. Even though the part of the lab where MacGyver and the thieves were located was sound proof, completely disconnected from the outside hallways, the men trying to take the vial realized that men were coming for them and they gave up, rushing hurriedly out of the lab but not before shoving MacGyver backwards, causing him to lose his grip on the vial and drop it. It shattered, the deadly virus it contained escaping.

“Attention…seal integrity compromised on lab specimen,” the announcer said.

“Oh my God,” Pete said.

“Don’t worry,” Sandra said. “The doors are designed to seal and keep it from spreading.”

“Lockdown and containment procedures initiated in Sector Ten,” the announcer said. “Contagion successfully isolated.”

“Well, thank God for that,” Pete said, sighing.

The white suited men darted down the hallway past them, nearly knocking them down, pursued by the heavily armed security guards.

“Apprehend them and secure the area now!” The lead man shouted into his radio as they passed.

Pete felt himself torn and confused in the midst of the action, wanting to see the thieves successfully captured, but also wanting to make sure that MacGyver was unharmed. Turning his attention to back inside the lab, he watched and waited anxiously to see if his friend would recover from his fall or if the virus had somehow managed to infect him, dreading the worst. Besides appearing a little shaken and dazed from his fall, MacGyver appeared to be unaffected by the contamination as he regained his bearings and stood, bracing himself against one of the tables for support as he righted himself, the bulky protective suit he wore cumbersome and awkward, making it difficult to maneuver his body as he normally would, unhampered by the excess weight of the suit.

“Can I talk to him? Make sure he’s all right?” Pete asked.

“Press the intercom button to communicate with him,” Sandra said, pointing at it to reveal its location. “He should be able to hear you.”

Pete pressed the button. “MacGyver, it’s Pete,” he said, speaking as loudly as he could over the continuous blaring of the sirens. “Are you okay? Can you hear me?”

MacGyver could hear him, and he was about to respond when he began to feel strange, dizzy, weak, achy, and nauseated. The effect was sudden, completely overtaking his body. The lab spun and became blurry, and his legs trembled, no longer able to support him. Blackness gathered around the corners of his eyes and then swallowed him, and he collapsed to the floor into unconsciousness.

“MacGyver!” Pete shouted, running towards the entrance of the lab.

Sandra seized him by the arm and stopped him, using more force and strength than he thought a woman her size was capable of.

“Pete, you can’t go in there!” She shouted.

“But what about MacGyver? You saw what just happened! He’s out cold!”

“I know,” Sandra said, the shock evident in her voice as she began to fully comprehend the devastating effects of the virus she had inadvertently created, its original purpose to find a new vaccine for infectious, incurable diseases now irrelevant. It had become its own infectious disease, perhaps more lethal and threatening than those it had been designed to prevent. She liked to feel in control, and now for the first time she realized she wasn’t. The virus was making its own rules, creating its own life, and what it would do next she could not predict. “He’s been exposed and infected. He’ll have to be placed in quarantine.”

To be continued…

Sandra deserves to die a painful death... eh, wait a second... she got that! tongue.gif You know, her arrogance and attitude was what made her such an unlovable character. A part of me tried to relate to all the things she was trying to achieve... but the other thought that she was so dangerous I was glad she died. I felt ver y sorry for her poor dog, though sad.gif

Oh, this story seems so interesting! I love it when Mac is missions of some sort. Yay! Thanks for another awesome story, MacsChick. Zeus - one of my cats - is really excited about it. He thinks that Sandra is such a witch because she didn't have a wise cat as her companion.
