Wow this is scary stuff coming out of New Zealand.

QUOTE
The law at the centre of the furor is Section 92a, a proposed amendment to the country's copyright law, due to come into force on February 28th.

The law instructs internet service providers that they "must adopt and reasonably implement a policy that provides for termination" of accounts used by anyone deemed a "repeat infringer" – regardless of whether the person has been convicted of a crime or not.

QUOTE
Join The New Zealand Internet Blackout to protest against the Guilt Upon Accusation law 'Section 92A' that calls for internet disconnection based on accusations of copyright infringement without a trial and without any evidence held up to court scrutiny. This is due to come into effect on February 28th unless immediate action is taken by the National Party.

well it's not even that, it's the fact that no-one has to prove you've done it. Your immediately assumed to be guilty as soon as your accused.

no investigation, no trials, no nothing, just bam your guilty.

There might still be hope. biggrin.gif

The Prime Minister has taken note of all the protesting and has held back the passing of the law until March 27 so it can be re-worked to something acceptable for all involved.

And there's a hint that if it can't be done by the deadline it will be suspended until it can be re-written properly.

I'm glad to hear that this is being questioned. It would have set a ridiculous precedent!

Precedent is less critical in international law -- after all, there are precedents for shooting people because they look at you funny.

But it's a stinking stupid idea.

Actually they're trying to blame it on the US and Australia, claiming that both countries already have similar law and that it would be pushed by the US as part of any Free Trade Agreement.

hmm.bmp Might need to call in a couple more favors yet.
