OK I gotta admit I am a Mac fan, but we are stumped and maybe someone can help. Please look at this discussion. http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,3691.0.html
It comes as a surprise that it states by leatherman that Mac used one in 1993, but it also states on the web that the series ended a year earlier.

Does anyone have a clue about this?

Firstly, Welcome aboard biggrin.gif

Heres what we know about MacGyvers knife

I would be interested to know what episode the multi-tool is used in.

Deborah uses a multi tool in The Negotiator episode, but I'm pretty sure MacGyver never used one.

The last episode aired in May 1992.

Was Leatherman even around back then?

MacGyver: Indiana Jones already did that, I saw the movie!

I heard on an interview with RDA once that he (personally) travels with a Leatherman when cycling (and he jokingly commented that he fully expected to receive a gross of them in the mail for the unofficial endorsement happy.gif ), but I'm with Rocky... MacGyver always carried a SAK.

I have heard comments to the effect of saying that MacGyver probably would have had a Leatherman on the show had they been around at the time (and I'm not entirely sure they were)- but to the best of my knowledge, I do not know of MacGyver ever using the tool on the show or the TV-movies for that matter. MacGyver's tool of choice is a Swiss Army Knife, occasional roll of duct tape, and of course- his wits and whatever else he finds lying around. sak.gif duct.gif MacG.gif

MacGyver could have carried a Leatherman tool. They have been around since 1983. He carried a Swiss Army knife int he early seasons, probably less expensive and more plentiful.

According to Leatheman website, MacGyver did use a Leatherman in 1993.

"Two firsts: One million Leatherman tools sell in one year, and MacGyver uses a Leatherman. MacGyver! Definitely a banner year."

For more info on history of Leatherman Tool, check this out:

When I worked in the lab, all the chemists were issued Leatherman Tools as part of our instrument maintenance toolkit. Too bad we didn't get issued SAKs. biggrin.gif

How did he manage that when the show ended in 1992?

False advertising in the extreme me thinks.

There were two movies that were released after the show went off the air in '92. He could have used one then. I don't have a copy of either movie and I have not seen either one, so I can not confirm or deny this.

anybody with a copy of movies care to clear it up? smile.gif

Thanks

I've got copies of the TV-movies and I don't know that I've seen MacGyver using a Leatherman in either one. (Though I did see him use his trademark tool- the Swiss Army Knife.) sak.gif

Unless Leatherman is just mistaken or making a joke, I don't think this is right.
Though maybe RDA did some sort of promo for Leatherman in 1993 in character as MacGyver? That'd be kind of neat- but if so, I've never heard of that. And I would think the Leatherman site would have some sort of documentation of that available (i.e. a video online to watch or transcript or photo or whatever.)

The Mac movies could have been filmed in 1993. I don't know.

The Leatherman Tool has some advantages over a SAK in that it has more tools in one handle. The disadvantage is that it is expensive and is heavy. Carrying one around in a pants or shirt pocket tends to drag the garment down, probably not the best for an action/adventure hero.

That said, the SAK is just COOLER than the Leatherman.

I was watching season 3 episode "The Negotiator" last night. What did I notice? A leatherman, not used by MacGyver, but by Debbie, the woman trying to kill Mac in the episode.

Perhaps the show's way of showing SAK used by the good guys, and Leatherman used by the bad guys... tongue.gif

The Leatherman-style multi tool has come a long way since the original PST. You've now got models that are just as compact as a SAK, but still come with a proper pair of pliers.

Take the Leatherman Juice range, for instance: Juice S2.

The only thing I can think of is that they asked for permission to use the Leatherman in filming one of the movies; shot a few scenes; then decided that MacGyver is known more for using a SAK.

*shrug*

My hubby was given a Leathermam for a gift... it sits unused in drawer.

The Swiss tools are much easier to handle, IMO.

Yeah... double posting. Sorry.

The thing that bothered me about that whole conversation on that other message board was that no one spelled MacGyver correctly! Grrr... dry.gif

Ahem! I think you'll find that I used the correct spelling with the exception of the deliberate mis-spelling when I made the Guyver reference.

i've to say SAK is the icon of MacGyver. Unless Mac used it in the show interchangeably with Leatherman. Otherwise, It's impossible to sudden have Mac using one in the show.

Leatherman multi-tools were not as develop and durable back then i believe. But if you look again NOW. It's really another dimension with all the sizes and models you can choose from. Pliers does come in handy in some suitation for some people.

One thing that I don't like about Leatherman tools is that, many of the models don't have plastic handle, which gives no insulation on whatever you're trying to do with your tool. Unfortunately, that's also their trademark.

The newer Lite version of SAKs have LED light. It could be useful in some cases (can't be used as a flashlight)

I always don't get why most of the SAKs have two blades when you only need one. It wastes a slot for another tool. Enlighten me if you know the reason behind this!! smile.gif
While Leatherman only has one main blade, it frees out a slot for another tool. And its bottle opener and can opener are actually

RDA had his reason carrying a Leatherman when biking. Pliers can adjust basically everything on a bike. Don't think SAKs' miniature pilers can do it effectively, plus the SAK models with pilers usually are very thick. It's one's preference to choose width over thickness i guess. Of course, RDA isn't MacGyver in his normal life cool.jpg

I think it's more interesting to see how someone uses his multi-tools more than what tool he/she's using. I'd like to see a show that uses a Leatherman tool extensively though, really wish to see another MacGyver type of show. Moreover, please bare in mind that, SAK was created by the Swiss. If you're loyal to america, you may want to support Leatherman biggrin.gif I use both SAK and Leatherman, so I'm not bias on any of the side.
