First post! Woho!
Now, as a huge fan of 'MacGyver' i was wondering if you guys think that we'll ever see a high definition transfer of our beloved show. The DVDs might be a tad better than the tv version, but that's not saying much seeing as it, well sucks big time. Like shows and movies today, 'MacGyver' was shot on 35mm film so there's no reason for it not to get a new high def treatment. Seeing as Seinfeld has been re-scanned and airied in full hd, there's not really anything stopping older shows from getting this kind of treatment. But then again, this is Paramount, so I guess we're censored.gif.

Hi, welcome!

I would say possibly, however in the UK we are still waiting for seasons 5-7 to come out on DVD. Might be a long wait if your not living in the US! Would be nice though. smile.gif

Don't get your hopes up. It already took years to get them on normal dvd. On Blu-ray that would last longer than 'years'.

Your missing one vital detail.

Yes, it was shoot on film, but it was then transfered to video for editing.

From what I can gather the original film was not kept. Hence the poor quality of the DVDs. (they are taken off the edited video)

Going by the lack of effort they put into the DVD release and subsequent "screwover the fans" release of the full season set, I would say any Blue-ray release would be of the same quality we already have.

The only way I can honestly see this happening is if the upcoming movie is a huge success and generates huge interest in the show. If CBS see a big increase in sales, they might consider putting some effort in.

Welcome aboard, by the way. Good to see you jumping straight into the fire biggrin.gif

Thanks for the nice welcomes!
Ah, yes. I had a feeling about it actually being edited on video. Apparently most shows back then were, but where did you hear that the original negatives weren't kept!? If this is true I think I'll cry!

I can't remember off-hand where that information came from. hmm.bmp

I think it came up in one of our discussions about the DVD quality at the time they where released, but I couldn't be sure of the exact source.

One thing to point out would be that even if they do still have the original film, it's probably in bad shape. Did you ever see the special about the digital re-release of Star Wars? They showed some of the original film footage and talked about how it had deteriorated so much in the film vaults that it was nearly beyond repair.
I would say the MacGyver film would probably be at that point by now, and even if they're not, every episode would need to be re-edited/re-made using the film footage, and exactly matching the original aired episodes.

An alternative would be, that they just fix up the video copies they already have. remove speckle, improve color etc. But judging from CBSs past performance, I'm almost 100% certain thats not gonna happen. sad.gif

Does the CBS site work for you in Argentina? If it does you can watch good quality copies of the episodes directly from their site.

Or you could just buy the DVD's from our store. wink.gif

That's a possibility as well, but seeing as Star Trek, recorded in the 1960s, has been given a full make over and is now being aired in full hd, I'd say there is still hope. And Star Wars was shot on film that was notorious for deteriorating, probably to save costs as it was a low budget production. But if it is like you say, and the film is lost, then we're truly censored.gif. Why oh why would one pay for high quality film only for it to be transferred to video, and then thrown away. And analog ntsc video no less; that's like the bottom of the censored.gif barrel.
