Mullets where the style back in the 80's/early 90's. It had nothing to do with trying to look like MacGyver.

The reason MacGyver had a mullet is because that was the style of the day.

Ha... that's pretty much exactly what my hair used to look like back in highschool! Except mine wasn't reddish, it was medium brown.
In my case, though, yes, I was trying to look like Mac. I admit it. I even used to button the top button on my shirts. Jeez. I guess it worked though, because even strangers would call me MacGyver.

I never got why he buttoned up the top button on his shirts. It looked kinda goofy to me.

Believe me, I completely agree with you. But at the time, my reasoning was, "If Mac does it, it must be cool." Pathetic, I know.
On the other hand, I pointed it out to my girlfriend recently, and she said, "I know it's odd, but it's sexy as hell when guys do that. "
So, who knows....

Back in high school I dressed like Mac too, buttoned up collar and everything. I still wear banded collar shirts and button the top button from time to time. I like the look, it's rather European and it changes things up from the day to day style.

Hey, we've all seen Kill Zone. He had a great sprinkling of hair back then, lol!
