Well the theme HAS to be the original MacGyver theme, in some form. I would expect it would get updated, but it should still be recognizable as the theme.

I say if your gonna make a movie do it properly and have an original score written for it, don't just use the current latest songs as some TV shows seem to do these days.

150% agree. Maybe jazz it up just a tiny bit. But leave the theme music alone.

How about just asking Dennis McCarthy, Randy Edelman or Ken Harrison for the job? My vote goes to Ken though however Randy Edelman has more experience with big movies (Kindergarten Cop, Last of the Mohicans, The Mummy 3). After all he created the theme song. I would choose them on their work for the show. When I see episodes like Serenity, The Treasure of Manco, Passages, The Wall, Bitter Harvest, Eye of Osiris, Good Knight MacGyver and The Stringer my vote immediately would go to Ken Harrison. After all he also did the two tv-movies. Episodes like Humanity, Easy Target, Nightmares, The Assassin. That's enough reason for me to hire Dennis McCarthy, if he can take it up to those levels.
Randy Edelman, I will choose him because of what I said above.

If I have to choose bigger composers my vote would go out to James Newton Howard. If you listen to the first track on Batman Begins, it sounds great for MacGyverism scenes. That was however in collaboration with Hans Zimmer, but I think he probably won't do the film. He was about to take a break anyway. Or maybe it's already taken, I don't know. Also Alan Silvestri from Back to the Future might get a consideration and if not, the job. And otherwise Trevor Rabin from the National Treasures.

Keep the latest pop songs out of it, there's no need of putting them in. Just a good old fashioned orchestral action/adventure score like they used to do in the 80's.

By the way, I already posted a message like this somewhere in the News Desk forums about the composers.

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.

Mike Post was a great television composer, I heard a version of the MacGyver theme and it was pretty close to the orgional. In fact I heard here on the tribute to Dana Elcar.

I found the link for it. I think it would make a nice closing to the movie.

Now that you mention it, I could totally see Vangelis doing this, or perhaps John Carpenter. I love that 80's synth style music and Carpenter's Escape from New York soundtrack is pretty kick ass. Unfortunately I doubt synth music will be utilized. As long as they stay clear of music like the likes of Marco Beltrami produces I'm fine.

That's more like the way I want it. But Marco Beltrami is active on many genres: action, thriller, horror...

I doubt they would use or ask to make music from a guy who's been active mostly in the horror genre.

I don't know much from Vangelis's work but they make more epical music for grander movies.

Now of course depending on what you mean on 'Beltrami's work' I think they should stick to that. I mean making a score with a live orchestra instead of using the Remote Control style to the likes of Hans Zimmer. Okay, in my previous post I said Trevor Rabin. He also works for that company but I think I can trust him if he sticks to his work like National Treasure and Deep Blue Sea.

What Mike Post is concerned and the other guy he worked with on The A-Team and Magnum PI is not exactly the style I would look for in MacGyver. It all has more rock guitars involved. Which was cool for shows like The A-Team and Magnum.

MacGyver requieres more the good old fashioned action music from the 80's, we were used to. So I'd say grab Ken, Dennis or Randy with their collars and shove them a big contract under their noses.

Another big composer of the 80's, I would've gone too would be Michael Kamen. God rest his soul.

Yes he is a tv composer who has won a lot of Emmys for his work, that include Hill Street Blues. John Williams could do a nice job with the music for the MacGyver movie.

Doubt they would get him. As long as he doesn't make the music too comical like Mutt Williams's theme.

A modern day warrior
Mean mean stride
Today's Tom Sawyer
Mean mean pride

Though his mind is not for rent
Don't put him down as arrogant
His reserve, a quiet defence
Riding out the day's events -
The river

What you say about his company
Is what you say about society
- Catch the mist - Catch the myth
- Catch the mystery - Catch the drift

The world is the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his skies are wide

Today's Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the space he invades
He gets by on you

No, his mind is not for rent
To any god or government
Always hopeful, yet discontent
He knows changes aren't permanent -
But change is

And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society
- Catch the witness - Catch the wit
- Catch the spirit - Catch the spit

The world is the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his eyes are wide

Exit the warrior
Today's Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
The energy you trade
He gets right on to
The friction of the day

That would be the song that plays as the credits role. Movies don't generally have a theme and title sequence. So any versions of the original theme would be background, or maybe key action sequence music I reckon.

Still think Harrison Ford could play an older MacGyver. He kind of reminds me of Mac in those MacGvyer/StarWars theme. Just my thoughts. ohmy.gif
